Abstract

This article explores quality habits that can be taught to non-English department students to improve their reading comprehension skills in English-language scientific literature. By using the theory and practice of reading comprehension, students are expected to be able to get used to reading scientific writings in English at a certain stage and time. This paper was developed using a qualitative approach based on data from grounded research that explores phenomena based on inductive studies which include reading theory, reading activity, and reading habit. This study found that students can increase their knowledge by understanding aspects of activities that become routine. These activities are inherent in the quantity and quality of reading activities. The results of this paper have implications for complex literacy mastery in supporting students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) as an academic need in the Society 5.0 era. This article proves that there is no barrier for non-English department students to be able to master reading skills from English texts by making quality reading habits.

Abstract

As online education is in a growing demands these days, however, shifting roles from face to face to online teaching is considerably problematic. This paper explores teachers’ instructional practices in their efforts to assimilate with online teaching. Using questionnaires and interviews, this study elicited teachers’ strategies to adjust their instructional practices in online learning. Pedagogical strategies to guide students’ knowledge and scaffolding were becoming their main concern besides effective communication – through their lexical choices when giving instructions. This study also shed lights on teacher professional development they had received to prepare them for online learning and areas of professional development they expected to have to support their new roles in online educations. While most of the professional development groundwork was to do with technical issues, they also claimed that pedagogical and content knowledge were in needs for their continuous professional development.

Abstract

In recent years, advancements in technology have significantly influenced various aspects of education, including language learning and writing skills. One notable technological tool that has gained prominence is the translator tool, which offers the potential to bridge language barriers and enhance writing processes for students. This background section delves into the growing significance of translator tools in the context of writing skills development, discussing their features, benefits, and potential impact on students' writing performance and processes. Writing skills have long been recognized as a fundamental component of education, enabling individuals to effectively communicate ideas, opinions, and information. Traditionally, writing instruction has encompassed grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and organization. However, with the advent of digital tools and platforms, the landscape of writing instruction has transformed. Technology has introduced innovative ways to engage learners and support their language learning journey. Translator tools, often powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, offer the ability to translate text from one language to another with varying degrees of accuracy. These tools have evolved from basic word-for-word translations to more sophisticated models capable of understanding context and producing coherent translations. Some of the prominent translator tools include Google Translate, DeepL, and Microsoft Translator. The integration of translator tools into writing instruction has shown potential benefits for students, particularly those learning a second language or aiming to communicate across linguistic boundaries

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the storytelling teaching style on the reading comprehension of elementary school students at the School of Life, GSJA El-Roy, Semarang. It was discovered that reading comprehension in English for elementary students in 5th and 6th grades was still too low, and students' reading skills still needed to be improved. In addition to improving reading skills, storytelling fosters critical thinking and helps children understand the order and structure of stories. To assess the effectiveness of the storytelling method in enhancing students' reading skills, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) and set a success scale above 8.5, measuring students' reading comprehension using various English vocabulary. A test was administered to 10 students, and the results revealed an average success scale of 9.3, indicating a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension skills. The writer suggest that future research need to conduct a follow-up assessment after an extended period would allow researchers to determine the long-term effects of the storytelling-based teaching strategy on students' reading comprehension skills. Keywords: Storytelling teaching style, reading comprehension skills, classroom action research

There is more than one main character developed in the film's stories in many different settings such as hotels, cruises, businesses, and universities. The script lasts six to ten minutes depending on the total number of pages in the script. This study shows that the script can meet the short film standards for the hospitality industry.
