Abstract

Abstract Motivation is one of the keys of success in learning because motivation is a factor that encourages the learners taking action and being active in learning process. In the study of Kinder in Washoe, he found that motivation is psychological mechanisms governing the direction, intensity, and persistence of action not due to solely to individual difference in ability to overwhelming environmental demands that coerce the force action. Sometimes, motivation can become a problem when it was low. So, the learners need to increase their writing motivation by doing some interesting activities. The goal of this research was to know how far students’ writing motivation. The subject of this research was the fourth semester students of Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Bahasa Asing (STIBA) Persada Bunda, and the object was the students’ writing motivation. The writer used simple sampling to take the sample. Based on the data analysis, The percentage of students’ writing motivation score was 77.48%. It can concluded that students’ writing motivation of the third semester students of Persada Bunda was in Strong Level. Keywords: Students’ writing motivation, Writing MOTIVASI MENULIS MAHASISWA PADA MAHASISWA SEMESTER 3 SEKOLAH TINGGI ILMU BAHASA ASING PERSADA BUNDA Abstrak Motivasi adalah salah satu kunci kesuksesan didalam belajar karena motivasi adalah factor yang mendorong peserta didik untuk beraksi dan aktif didalam proses pembelajaran. Didalam penelitian oleh Kinder, dia menemukan bahwa mativasi adalah mekanisme perintah secara psikologi, intensitas, dan ketekunan dalam beraksi tidak semata mata karena perbedaan kemampuan untuk memeunhi permintaan lingkungan yang memaksa untuk melakukan aksi. Terkadang, motivasi bisa menjadi sebuah masalah ketika ia rendah. Jadi, mahasiswa perlu untuk meningkatkan motivasi menulis mereka dengan melakukan beberapa aktifitas yang menarik. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sejauh mana tingkat motivasi menulis mahasiswa. Suyek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 3 Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Bahasa Asing Persada Bunda, dan obyek penelitiannya adalah Motivasi menulis mahasiswa. Penulis menggunakan Simple sampling untuk mengambil sampel. Berdasarkan analisis data, persentase dari motivasi menulis mahasiswa berada pada nilai 77.48%. Hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa motivasi menulis mahasiswa semester 3 STIBA Persada Bunda adalah pada level “kuat”. Kata-kata kunci: Motivasi Menulis, Menulis.

Abstract

Abstract—Learning a foreign language by using social media at the University level is very important because social media has great potential to support student-centered learning as they are flexible, interactive, and resource–rich in nature. One of its drawbacks is the quality of online instruction that lead to unfavorable perception and perspective of the students. The objectives of this research are to analyze the students’ perceptions and perspectives in using Social Media as a tool in English Language learning. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the students of the English Study Program, Faculty of Education, the Islamic University of Riau. Research finding revealed that social media is very practical and useful for getting general information, knowledge and to increase their language competency. Abstract

Reading occupies large portion in teaching-learning activities, especially for English department students. It is reasonable since all their learning materials are in English. However, their ability in reading comprehension is low. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research to solve this problem. The purpose of this research was to find out whether Reciprocal Teaching strategy can solve and improve the students’ reading comprehension. Moreover, this research was also to find out what factors influence the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension. This research is action research. The participants of the research were the third semester students of 2018-2019 academic year which consisted of 13 students. The instruments used to collect the data were from observation checklists, field notes, interviews, and reading tests. After analyzing the data, it was found that reciprocal teaching strategy was able to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability. It could be seen from the improvement of their mean score in reading comprehension at the end of the cycle 1. The factors that influenced the improvement of their reading ability involved materials, teacher’s knowledge, students’ interaction, and assessment activities. To sum up, the implementation of reciprocal teaching strategy was able to provide positive results on their reading comprehension.

Abstract

Mobile phone is a recent technology in teaching English. Mobile phone provides simple and easy way in developing teaching and learning activities, therefore, the researcher was interested in finding the data information about the role of mobile phone for English language teaching. The utilization of mobile phone offers valuable opportunities for creating an effective teaching strategy. The students' perspectives are crucial for getting their views of role of mobile phone in language teaching. This case study was to find out the students' perspectives of mobile phone role in English language teaching. A qualitative design was employed for the purpose of getting the data. Mainly semi structure interview was used as the research instruments. The result of her research finding showed that most students were having good response towards the usage of mobile phones in language learning but some findings shown that the problems were also occurred at the same moment of using it. These research findings were contributed the next research for more deeply dig for language learning.

Abstract

Selecting appropriate textbook to the students is important because textbook have dominant role in the success of foreign language teaching and learning. The purpose this article is to analyze the readability level of English reading texts with automated computer tools. There are eight reading texts that will be analyzed in this qualitative study. The data and source of data of this research were adopted from an English textbook entitled Pathway to English 2 Textbook for the Eighth Grade of Junior High School Students Published by Erlangga. The results reveal that only 1 text was appropriate for seven or eight grade of Junior High School students. There were 6 texts appropriate elementary students. And there was 1 text suitable for Senior High School students.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the advantages of android use in learning process. This research conducted at the fourth semester of English Department of Education and Teachers Training Faculty of Universitas Lancang Kuning. The sample of this research is 30 % of the total number of the population, they are about 7 students. The method of this research is descriptive analysis. Before getting the data by giving questionnaire to the students during teaching and learning process of Translation Subject by using android, they had got a test of translating an English text into Bahasa Indonesia. Finally, it is found that there are some advantages found. They are android motivated the students, android is easy to use and access, android improve the students’ confidents to involve in the learning process.

Abstract

High-stake English proficiency tests, such as TOEFL and IELTS, open up opportunities for the people in Indonesia to study in reputable universities, both local and abroad. Since Indonesian learners are non-native English speakers, some institutions help them to overcome the problems they have with the tests. Related to these issues, the teachers may face some challenges in teaching the students who want to reach their target scores. For that reason, this study was conducted to find out: 1) teacher challenges in teaching the TOEFL and IELTS tests, and 2) teacher strategies in motivating the students. The location of the study was in an English educational institution in Pekanbaru. The participants were 10 teachers who had taught these tests preparation for more than two years. The method used was a qualitative approach with face-to-face interviews as the data collection instrument. It was found that the challenges of the teachers in teaching the tests were 1) students’ high expectations, 2) lack of effort from students, 3) study time limitations, 4) teachers’ experience, 5) issues with high school students, and 6) the number of students in a class. It was also found that the teachers’ strategies in motivating the students were 1) students’ awareness of the opportunities of passing the tests, 2) fun learning, 3) telling stories of people who are successful through passing the tests, and 4) reminding the students why they joined the class, spending much money, time and energy on these tests. All in all, though teachers faced some challenges in teaching IELTS and TOEFL tests, they also had strategies to overcome them.

Abstract

This research was done based on the needs to improve the learners’ ability in pronunciation of ending –s by using android based application. Android based becomes popular in this era since gadget applies many applications to improve English language proficiency. The aim of the research is to implement the application on android based to improve the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s and to find the influencing factors of the improvement. The method of this research was qualitative. This Classroom Action Research was conducted at eight second-year-learners in academic year 2018/2019 at STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. There were tests, fieldnotes, observation, and interview used in the data collecting techniques in this research. The result shows that implementing the application existed on android based learning media to improve learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s has significantly improved. It can be seen that the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s are at the “fairly good” level category with score 56,67 increases to the “good” level category with score 73,75. Some influential factors towards the learners’ improvement were affected by the students’ willingnes to practice differentiating the base form of word given and continuous listening practice to the application which was aimed to obtain the information during the teaching-learning process. In conclusion, the implementation of application on android based can improve the learners’ ability in pronouncing ending –s.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring students’ attitudes and perceptions about the effectiveness of field trips strategy. The participants of this study were 40 English students of Universitas Islam Riau, Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. This study employed an exploratory mixed-method design. The questionnaire consisted of three parts and 25 items which aimed at getting information about affective learning, the qualities among students and the contribution of a field trip on Society and Individuals. A five-point Likert-scale ranging from “ strongly agree’ to “strongly disagree” was asked to respondents to be selected. While a semi-structured interviewed was used together comprehensive information about the advantages of field trips in their study. The results of this study shown that field trips contribute to students’ learning experience positively, besides it can solve many problems in the classroom and enhance the ability of students to think critically and creatively.

Abstract

This research aimed at improving the seventh grade students’ vocabulary mastery by using an interactive movie. The method of the research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The actions were implemented in a cycle with five meetings. In conducting the research, the researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher. The participants of the research were 30 students of class VII.2 of MTsN 2 Pekanbaru. The instruments used for collecting the data were test, observation checklist, field note, and interview. The findings described that the use of interactive movie was able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. After learning by using the interactive movie, the students were able to identify the noun, verb, adjective and adverb related to the topic of descriptive text. It was proved by the quantitative data gotten from the students’ average score of the test. It was 81.06. This score improved significantly from the students’ previous average daily score which was 72. There were several factors influenced the improvement: First, the interactive media was motivated. It can be seen from the teaching and learning process, the students were really enthusiastic in joining all the activities. Second, teaching and learning activity was fun. So, the students enjoy and being active while learning.
