Abstract

The term dhaamir in Arabic means pronoun which function to replace things or people which refer forward or backward in the text. This study was intended to describe Arabic personal pronoun in short stories and classify it into anaphora and cataphora. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The sources data of the research were three selected Arabic short stories written by Muhsen Jabbar which was published in 2013. Jabbar’s short stories were selected because most of his works contained lessons of human attitude and behavior. After analyzing the data, the result showed that: (1) there were 152 anaphora found in Jabbar’s short stories which consisted of 2 independent pronoun and 148 suffix personal pronoun. (2) There were 3 cataphora found in short stories. Thus, it could be concluded that anaphora was found more than cataphora in Muhsen Jabbar’s selected short stories.

Abstract

Reference is an essential component for comprehending a reading text. In comprehending a text some students had problem such as their limited vocabulary, inability to interpret reference, and lack of background knowledge. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ reference mastery in narrative text and students’ difficulties in mastering reference. This research was a descriptive research. Random sampling technique was applied and twenty two students of XI grade of SMAN 1 Tempuling were taken as the subject of the research. The data were collected through quantitative and qualitative methods. Reading test was distributed to collect quantitative data, while interview was applied to gather qualitative data. The findings of this research reveal that the students’ reference mastery was in good category, but some problems still appeared which were affected by some factors; lack of practice, limited vocabulary mastery, and poor grammar mastery. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ reference mastery in narrative text needed to be improved.

Abstract

This study was an attempt to determine the impact of interaction between teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards students’ learning achievement in colleges of education at Jambi University. This is a quasi-experimental study with nonequivalent control and experimental group design. Based on the test for normality, homogeneity, and analysis of variance to the data students’ achievement score of experiment class can be concluded that, there are significant differences of learners’ achievement between before and after treatment in experimental class using audio-visual media. Then, there are significant differences between the learners’ vocabulary mastery on their learning achievement. The result of this study showed; 1. There is a significant effect between teaching media toward learners’ achievement. Test result obtained that p-value 0,015 (<0,05) 2. Vocabulary mastery gave the significant effect to the learners’ achievement. Test result obtained that p-value for vocabulary mastery is 0,000 (<0,05). 3. There is no interaction influence between the teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards learners’ achievement. Test result retrieved that p-value is 0,948 (>0,05).

Abstract

This study was descriptive qualitative, which aimed at explaining the casual conversation features between two learners and its functions in terms of negotiation meaning, spontaneity, interpersonality, and interactivity. To obtained data, firstly, recording the conversation was done, continued by transcribing, coding, and the last was analyzing the findings. The findings showed this conversation was dominated by exchange information and idea between the speakers rather than exchanging feelings because logico-semantic appeared more dominant than interpersonal negotiation. In terms of spontaneity feature, it could be shown by the learners’ laughter during the conversation. Meanwhile, interpersonality features occurred were filled pauses, repetition, false start, and chunk. Then, interactivity features were turn-taking, back-channeling, and discourse markers. Also, those number of features and its functions implied in this casual conversation have an essential contribution. For instance, filled pauses can be used to take time to think of what is going to say. This study suggests that further research investigates how cultural and gender affect the speakers’ spoken features in monologue and dialogue speech, and also both formal and non-formal situations

Abstract

The aim of this study is to know wether there is or not significant effect of using YouTube channel to students’ speaking skill. The use of YouTube channel can make easier for students to receive lessons, motivate students in learning, so what is the purpose of education can be achieved well. YouTube encourages positive learning attitude if it is incorporated in classroom teaching to supplement language learning especially speaking. The design of this study is experimental research that was conducted at English language study program of Universitas Islam Riau. The sample consist of 48 students from the first semester. After applying YouTube channel in learning, the results of the study showed a significant improvement. Based on the data of SPSS, the value of sig. (2-tailed) was 0,000 which is not greater than the probability value of 0.05. (0.000 < 0.05). It can be concluded that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted, means that there is significant effect of using YouTube channel towards students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating whether or not there were significant differences in summarizing and retelling achievements between the eighth graders who were exposed with Mind Mapping strategy and those who were not. The population was the eighth graders of one of the Junior High Schools in Palembang. Sixty students were taken as the sample and were put into control and experimental groups. Both control and experimental groups were given pre and post tests, but only the experimental group was given the exposure of Mind Mapping strategy. To collect the data, writing and speaking tests were given and then analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The results showed that there were significant improvements in the students’ summarizing and retelling achievements in the experimental group after the treatment given. There were also significant improvements in summarizing and retelling achievements between the experimental and control groups.

Abstract

This research was initiated to study the pattern of sentences written by students who were considered as beginner in their writing work. The further aim upon the study was to see what majority of the group approaches in developing their sentences in regards of their linguistic process as well as their idea organization. In respond to its initial drives, this study was approached in qualitative manner. There were 30 papers were examined and analyzed to synthesize the working approaches by the writers at common system and the attention was brought the individual sentence character and ideas organization throughout sentences and paragraphs. The findings suggest that the sentences were relatively good on language part but once the writing topics require their opinion and existing information, it started to decrease its quality. In such of writing, overgeneralized ideas and illogical structures are common. Therefore, since the writers were beginners, this research suggests supporting system that help the writers cope with their language barriers through introducing language on more complex language forms and together with practices. In addition to this, to support writers as the task environment increases reading materials are essential to help them build a more thoughtful writing piece.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the leadership style used by the manager and how it corresponds to the instructors’ teaching performance. The samples were a manager and eight instructors of one of English courses selected by using purposeful sampling and maximal variation sampling as the strategy. To collect the data, questionnaires were used and an interview was conducted. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage analysis and descriptive analysis. The results of leadership style questionnaire show that the manager 76.7% believes that she applies both autocratic and democratic leadership style while the instructors 66.7% believe that their manager is a democratic. From the interview and open-ended questionnaire for instructors’ teaching performance, it can be explained that under the leadership of the manager, they have a good teaching performance.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how students' speaking skills are developed through the Communicative Language Teaching approach. The significance of this research is to provide information for readers, especially for Pamona people as native speakers of the language, about the tenses in the Pamona language. Researchers used the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) theory by Richard and Rodgers to develop students' speaking skills. The results of this study indicate that the objectives of this study have been achieved. The ability to speak English students successfully developed through the application of communicative language teaching approaches, through learning that triggers students to speak actively in the classroom through conversations as an exercise. In the first cycle all students attend the test. The results of the test in the first cycle were 12 students failed (33.3%) and 24 students (66.7%) passed. Achievement of the average grade of the class is also still low with a score of 65.8 grades C. Researchers then reflect on the learning process in this first cycle to be applied in the second cycle. In the second cycle, all students attend the test. The results of this test were 33 students (91.6%) successfully passed the test and 3 students (8.4%) failed. From the explanation of the results of the second cycle above, it appears that in this cycle the completeness criteria for class has been reached, in which 80% of the total number of students must achieve grades A, B or C or a value of more than 65. Students succeed in developing their English speaking skills because supported by teaching approaches that trigger students to speak and practice the functions of the language being learned.

Abstract

Students’ motivation in learning English as a Foreign language might be influenced by strategies used in the classroom. This article aims to find out to what extend guessing game improve students’ speaking skill and to find out the factors influence the students’ speaking skill. This is action research which the samples were taken from VIII A class consisted on 32 students at SMPN 1 Tanjungpinang. The instruments in this research were using test and observation.
