Abstract

This research investigates the contributive factors influencing students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) dan unwillingness to communicate (Un-WTC) in English as a foreign language in higher education in Indonesia. 10 first-year students which came from several non-English departments participated in the study and they represented the WTC and Un-WTC groups. Semi-structured observations and interviews were used to collect the data. The result reveals that there were two main factors contributing to their WTC and Un-WTC, namely individual dan external factors. The ideal L2 self, confidence, anxiety, and perceived communicative competence are among the individual factors, while teacher’s personality, types of activities and topics, classroom atmosphere subsumes to the external factors. These factors are interconnected and affect students’ WTC and Un-WTC in the classroom.

Abstract

Conducting classes for English as a Specific Purpose such as in hospitality and tourism requires thorough needs analysis that serves the needs all stakeholders. However, most studies investigate the perceptions of students of hospitality or tourism major, while the perceptions of hotel employees are rarely investigated. This study is aimed at investigating Indonesian hotel employees (n = 77) perceptions towards various aspects of English skills. No statistical differences were found on the 15-item questionnaire responses based on gender, current job level, hotel stars, and current job departments. However, the results showed that listening and speaking skills are perceived as the most important, while spoken grammar is considered as the least important.

Abstract

This study entitled An Analysis of Indonesian-English Code Mixing on Social Media was examined by the researcher (Twitter). The goal of this study is to determine the form and function of Indonesian-English code-mixing on Twitter. A descriptive qualitative method was used to perform this study. The data for this study employed the tweets of influential people on Twitter. The instrument utilized by this researcher was documentation. This study was carried out entirely online, primarily on Twitter. The influencers' tweets were screenshotted by the researcher. The data was then categorized as code-mixing by the researcher. The findings showed that there are six forms of code-mixing in Twitter, such as code-mixing of Word 53 data, code-mixing of Phrase 20 data, code-mixing of Hybrid 8 data, code-mixing of Word Reduplication 1 data, code-mixing of Idiom 7 data, code-mixing of Clause 25 data. The researcher found some relevant purposes of code-mixing in Twitter. They are need feeling motive, be more informative, make jokes, expressing their emotions.

Abstract

Quipper School is an online learning platform which consists of two portals, namely Learn for students and Link for teachers This research aimed to investigates the students‟ perception on the advantages and disadvantages of Quipper School platform in learning English. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Mandau, and the sample was 52 students of the eleventh grade. This research used quantitative research, and the instrument is questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 20 questions, divided into 10 questions of the advantages and 10 questions of the disadvantages. The results of this study were processed quantitatively using the Likert scale formula. The finding revealed the index advantages of 1st statement to the 10th statement were about between 60%-75%. The result indicates that students completely agree with the 10 questions of the advantages of Quipper School‟s. Equally important, the researcher also found that the students were dominant disagree with the 9 questions and were agree of 1 question of disadvantages of Quipper School‟s with the index 52%-61%. In conclusion, the students of SMAN 3 Mandau dominant disagree with the disadvantages of Quipper School and they assumed that Quipper School is an online learning platform that suitable for teachers and students in the learning process, especially in learning English.

Abstract

Vocational High School could not fulfil completely the requirements of skilled workers to support Indonesia globally. So, this study is to describe the implementation of a single picture to teach describing things orally at vocational high school to increase speaking ability. This study used classroom action research which has planing, acting, observing and reflecting step. The data was collected using speaking performance tests for the quantitative and observation checklist, field notes, and questionnaires for the qualitative. In the first cycle, all students could not describe things well because they did not get treatment. In the second cycle, 23% of students were excellent, 60% were good, and only 12% were categorized poorly. It can be implied that a single picture could assist the students’ creativity in describing things orally and increase the speaking ability.

Abstract

Online learning during the Covid-19 era requires educators to be creative in compiling interesting learning materials so that students can study the material well and not get bored while learning. But in reality, some of the problems faced by some students, especially those in semester 4th of the English department at the Universitas Islam Riau Riau who have been online since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, have difficulty when they are writing an essay. The sample of this research is the English Language Education student in Universitas Islam Riau, which consist of 34 fourth semester students. This was investigation design which mainly analyzes quantitative data via a distributed web-based questionnaire provided as numerical data on graphics and charts. This questionnaire was based on Ceylan's (2019) questionnaire which focus on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The majority of online learning aspects are connected to distance and time flexibility, student and instructor interaction, and many aspects that online learning shares with distant education. As a result, online learning may not even be ready to serve all disciplines in the same way, and that not all online learning platforms are the same. The student lacked the opportunity to practice academic writing skills and produce a solid essay product. As a result, students must practice writing as often as possible in order to produce a well-written essay. Cognitive difficulties are now defined as difficulties in the categories of writing perspective, transferring language, and writing process.

Abstract

Reading is critical for students of English as a foreign language. Apart from the four abilities that needed desire to grow, reading is one of the most critical skills in language acquisition. Therefore, this study aims to investigate reading motivation and EFL learners’ vocabulary development against interest in learning English moderated by teacher competence. The research participants were university students (ages 18) as many as 53 students in the Riau Province, Indonesia. This research was using quantitative methods. The data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) technique which was operated through the Warp PLS 3.2.7 program. Finding of this study revealed that there was a significant effect on student interest in learning with teacher competence as a moderating variable. The teacher should provide an interesting text for students, especially EFL students, so that students read the English text not because they are forced by their surroundings, but because they have an internal motive to complete the work.

Abstract

This study was aimed to examine the effectiveness of using the Tree Diagram technique to enhance mastery of vocabulary in seventh-grade students of MTs Miftahul Huda Bulungan in the academic year 2021/2022. Quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group design was used as the research design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling and involved two classes which included 33 students in the experimental group and 32 students in the control group. The instruments were 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 essay questions. A T-test was used to analyze the data. The result of the t-test was 2,786>1,670. The Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. There was a significant difference in mean scores of pretest and posttest which indicated that the tree diagram technique took a good effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery. This study concluded that the implementation of the tree diagram was effective to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery

Abstract

This study aims to investigate undergraduate students’ perspective toward the use of YouTube in online and face-to-face learning in which the videos used were made specifically by the lecturer for learning syntax. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method. The data were obtained by distributing survey-based questionnaires to 17 participants studying at a college majoring English Language Education. The results show that participants have strongly positive perspective toward the use of YouTube in both online and face-to-face learning. On their perspective, YouTube videos made are relevant to the course being studied; attractive for its convenience, affordability and accessibility; and effective to help them understand the lesson. It also motivates them to learn well and to participate in the class. So, it is better for lecturers to have a YouTube channel with their own learning videos to support their students in both face-to-face and online learning.

Abstract

Most of EFL learners in Indonesia hardly adopt pronunciation due to limited time, problem from the role model, and difficult sound production. To solve the problem, speech texter-application was implemented as learning media. The research aimed to identify whether and to what extent implementation of speech-texter application can improve EFL learners’ fricative pronunciation and explain the factors which influence the changes in pronouncing fricative consonants. The research implemented action research method. The research used purposive sampling technique and 16 learners from the first semester of a private public college in Pekanbaru. There were instruments used to collect the data. The quantitative data were pronunciation oral test, while the qualitative data were observation checklist, field note and interview. The qualitative data were analysed by scoring and comparing to the standard ability and qualitative data were analysed by data , data display and conclusion drawing. After analysing the data, it was revealed that speech-texter application was able to improve learners’ fricative pronunciation. The improvement of learners’ ability was from the level of “fair” into “good” category at the end of cycle 1. The factors which affecting the improvement was the use of speech-texter application which provide opportunity as self-check application. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of speech-texter.
