Abstract

The cover design is the face of the whole picture of the publication works, which not only serves as a media promotion but also as a medium of identification. This paper consists of a review of the cover design of a book of Anak-anak Revolusi by Budiman Sudjatmiko by using visual communication design approach. Then the choice will also be discussed in other visual approach that can be applied. Research method used in this paper is literature study, continued with reflective data analysis. By the end of the paper, a more comprehensive picture related object being reviewed. The book of Anak-anak Revolusi by Budiman Sudjatmiko has an excellent script and has an appropriate methaporic book cover. However, at the time of the visualization of the book cover is executed, there are many shortcomings that should have been optimized so that the book of Anak-anak Revolusi could be presented entirely and completely in many aspects.

Abstract

After the invention of PC and the internet, smart phones and tablet PC are the common gadgets that can be easily found among people in Indonesia. Besides its advantages, these instruments change the way users communicating to the others. Preliminary observation suggests that students who used IT or communication gadgets have developed a different attitude compared to those who are not. In writing for example, many young students today tend to write using the keyboard rather than handwriting. From the writer?s point of view, it is believed that the characteristic of these communication gadgets has influenced the way most young teenagers act, talk, and behave. The result of analysis of this paper has provided a clearer picture on the effect of certain technology toward the behavior of some students and teachers at BINUS University. The data gathered through qualitative observation from English Department students and English teachers at BINUS University shows that the presence of communication gadgets and social networking activities has changed the attitude especially concerning to learning preference.

Abstract

This article would argue that basic design in undergraduate design study is equally significant in both freshmen as well as senior years (when projects of simulated professional practice tend to regard contexts as more significant than visual itself). It will be shown that basic design plays a profound role throughout the whole education setting, from lectures, form-creation process, to design criticism and assessments. It even expands its worth into sphere of professional practice, as long as form analysis and form-making ability are still demanded as a vital part of designer?s set of competencies. For how could visual analytic or consideration become less important than e.g. marketing, since designer becomes designer, if and only if he/she has certain competence in visual instead of academic-grade marketing? More after, this brief inquiry employs the method of literary study in conjunction with direct and indirect observation through the internet concerning design education and its practice, followed by critical reflections. The outcome of this study would be a firm recommendation for basic design engagement through the whole education years, since its descriptive-generative functions of visual are yet highly relevant, for they lie at the very core of visual communication design discipline itself.

Abstract

Speech acts learns about the relationship between speaker and hearer. It needs good cooperation between speaker and hearer so that communication can run well. A speech has implicatures depending on what is heard by the hearer. This researh aims to find implicatures in Nihonjin no Shiranai nihongo Ep 1 movie. Research applied qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Then, by its results, it is found conversational implicatures, such requests, questions, suspicion, doubt, sadness, sarcasm, ridicule, orders, facts, and solicitation occurred in the movie. Moreover, research concludes that the implicatures happened in directive, expressive, declarative, and assertive speech act.

Abstract

New media, like Twitter, has changed many possibilities, including marketing strategy in Indonesia. One of the extraordinary phenomena is paid-to-tweet, as being used by celebrity or ordinary users. The purpose of the article is to identify how Twitter roles in marketing: what the unique characteristic of Twitter so that Word-of-Mouth (WOM) could work effectively and efficiently? How viral marketing, buzz marketing and recommendation could move simultaneously to increase awareness to consumers about specific goods and services? How to choose the endorsers, as buzzers and key opinion leader in social media like Twitter? And why is hard-sale highly forbidden in new marketing practical style? Generally, the article will analyze about what and how regarding phenomena of paid-to-tweet happening in Indonesia.

Abstract

Using structural approach and Tzvetan Todorov?s theory about ?absolute hesitation?, this research discusses how the narrative and cinematographic elements build Pan?s Labyrinth (2006) as a unique fantastic film. Directed by Guillermo del Toro Pan?s Labyrinth is a film in Spanish about a little girl named Ofelia who has to live in a house in the middle of the forest and experiences many bizarre incidents, including meeting the Faun. The narrative elements discussed in this paper are motives and themes, while the cinematographic elements are settings, lighting and colours. To analyze the data, this research uses a qualitative method that lies on library research. The result of the discussion shows how the intrinsic elements successfully built ?absolute hesitation? in Pan?s Labyrinth. Thus, Pan?s Labyrinth can be categorized as a fantastic film with a dark twist that is Del Toro?s irreplaceable characteristic in directing films.

Abstract

More than million foods have been made by people from all over the world in the latest years. People now try to create new cooks and make some creativity on it. Then, cooking which the field is culinary has become an art because it needs an artistic value to decorate the food, a good taste and proper technique in processing delicious food in order to make it a masterpiece. French culinary is as famous as the Eiffel tower in the heart of the country, Paris. Most of fine dining international restaurants apply the French menu and cooking. This article presents an overview about the French element in culinary world; starts from its history, kitchen organization, French menu spelling, and French cooking vocabulary. The discussion proceeds library research to compile the data. Later, the art of culinary is interesting to be learned because it contains the classical history of world civilization, in this case French civilization. The issue of cooking trend ?nouvelle cuisine? was a masterpiece of one of the greatest chef in his time, Escoffier. French culinary is widely well-known in all over the world because of innovation, creativity, and proud. Those are spirits that we must learn.

Abstract

One of the purposes of studying a foreign language one is to support the ability / skills later used in the workforce. One of the skills / abilities needed by learners is the ability in business correspondence. Binus University offers a compulsory specialization course for students in their sixth semester namely translation and office. Japanese business correspondence courses is one of the compulsory subjects contained in the specialization in office for the sixth semester students. Problems contained in Binus University are that most students who took office specialization dislike grammar, kanji, and others. This problem is quite significant in the process of teaching and learning so that teachers should use other media such as discussion forums on Binusmaya to maximize the teaching and learning in the classroom and also help students who lack the ability to make sentences with the correct and appropriate sentence pattern.

Abstract

Neighbour Programme was initiated in 2010 by three institutions from Southeast Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand; then Indonesia joined them a year later in 2011. These institutions, which specialise in art and design, decided to develop a project about cultural exchange that aimed to reconnect art and design in the form of a dialogue and research as practice. This project also intended to include forming mutual networks to organise exchange programmes, creating cultural collisions within this mixture. Based on thought that Southeast Asia?s countries have the same root of art, culture and heritage, Neighbour focused on searching a different topic each year that could be explored and developed into knowledge and understanding for both students and lecturers, and hopefully to publics about their own visual culture. Neighbour has running since 2010 and still developing until present. This project has used different methods, such as Constructivist Learning that gave new perspective of gaining knowledge; and hopefully Neighbour will keep trying to find a new method to engage art, design, and culture with publics internationally.

Abstract

As the main female character in movie "Farewell My Concubine", Ju Xian was a brave, smart, worldly-wise but kindhearted woman. Even though she was a prostitute, she was longing for an ordinary life. She loved Xiao Lou, moreover, in order to engross Xiao Lou, she even tried to drive a wedge between Die Yi and Xiao Lou. She used her wisdom to save and protect Xiao Lou, but on the other hand, she was also the one who destroyed Xiao Lou and her own life. Article tried to through close reading analyze the character of Ju Xian and her relationships with Die Yi and Xiao Lou. Article revealed the inescapable tragic fate of Ju Xian.
