Abstract

T This article analyses the connection between the spice route and the Islamization of the Nusantara archipelago, focusing on the Samudera Pasai network. This research is historical research that uses several sources from Malay, Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese. The research found that the Samudera Pasai use the decline of the Sriwijaya network to create a hub of a new network of the Malacca Strait, Indian Ocean, and the Java Sea at the northern tip of Sumatra. After the king converted to Islam and made his country a center for religious da'wah, Samudera Pasai grew more rapidly. From this process, two patterns were formed, namely the India-China network and the Java-Malacca network. The first pattern is highly influenced by India's religious and commercial characteristics, while China tends to have political and trade characteristics. In this pattern, Samudera Pasai is passive and becomes part of two main poles of the Asian economy (India and China). In the second pattern, Samudera Pasai is more serious in pushing Muslim communities and the birth of Islamic leaders in Java. Samudera Pasai network largely determined the progress of Malacca. After the kingdom converted to Islam because of the enforcement of the Sultan of Pasai and the scholars in Malacca, Samudera Pasai finally replaced the primary role of the Malacca Strait. This study concludes that Islam is a stimulus for the growth and development of Muslim port cities in the archipelago's spice routes in the XIII-XVI centuries.

Abstract

This research paper aims to explore Banten-Manila trade network by answering three following research questions: (1) how did the Banten sultanate establish its trade network to Manila; (2) how did Banten maintain its commercial connection to Manila?; (3) how was the banten-manila trade cut by the Dutch? The method which is applied in this research is historical method, which comprises four following steps: heuristic, critic, interperation and historiography. Historical sources which are made use of in this research are primary sources, mainly dagh register (VOC archives) and diaries of Catholic missionaries in Philipine. My study of primary sources consistently shows that Bantenese ships transported two important commodities; cloth and iron to Manila and brought home Spanish coins. Besides cloth and iron, Bantenese ships also transported pepper and other commodities to Manila; these included rice, Japanese copper, and sappan wood (caesalpina sappan). The most prosperous period in the history of the Sultante of Banten was during its trade relations with Manila, from 1663-1682. The trade relations had resulted in the Sultanate of Banten to send ships to many harbours; from Siam, to China, Gujarat, Pegu, Coromandel, Madraspatnam, Surat, Macao, Vietnam, Persia, Mocha and London.

Abstract

This research is expected to produce a strategy for the subaltern Poka-Galala boat rower in order to obtain the right strategy in order to get out of poverty caused by the construction of the red and white bridge so that the subaltern's income decreases and even loses their livelihood which has been a source of income to support their families. In addition, the research is also expected to be seen by stakeholders in the Maluku province and the Ambon City government in order to get the right solution in restoring the livelihood system that exists in the subordinate class of Poka-Galala boat rowers who depend on this work for a living. For this reason, it is hoped that it can produce an appropriate strategy for the subalterns, but will these subalterns be able to if they are not assisted both financially and morally in the form of motivation to fight for their rights and how to voice their rights to the government because basically subalterns are marginalized community groups? who are not able to express what they want they need strong voices sitting in government, and what about the attention of the government it self, the policy they are asking for is a policy that is truly in favor of the subaltern, if allowed then the government should be able to reengineer This beautiful bay of Ambon is a tourist spot in sea waters so that it can restore subaltern income which is reduced or even completely lost due to the construction of the red and white bridge.

Abstract

Panglima Laot is a cultural institution that has existed for a long time in Aceh. Starting in the 17th century, Panglima Laot consistently made an essential contribution to the coastal communities of Aceh, especially in preserving the marine environment by implementing and enforcing Adat Laot. While most research only discussed Panglima Laot's contribution to Aceh’s marine environment with its unique customary law, this research aspires to explore the role of Panglima Laot in the context of maritime security in Aceh. By utilising the maritime security matrix from Bueger, this study found that Panglima Laot contributed to realising four critical elements of maritime security: human security, marine environment, economic development, and national security. The contribution was obtained from the effective cooperation carried out by maritime security stakeholders in Aceh with Panglima Laot. These maritime security stakeholders are Aceh Regional Police, the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Aceh Province, and the Indonesian Navy.

Abstract

The study of spices in Kalimantan area tends to focus on pepper, a commodity that can be said to introducethis island as a ‘pepper country’ to the wider world in the maps made by European explorers. In fact, othercommodities, such as garu (agarwood) and sintok (wild cinnamon), have also been traded long before pepper. As a commodity, the two endemic fragrances that grow naturally in the forest certainly have different effects onthe community than the cultivated pepper. How the mutual influence that binds between the community and theenvironment in the perfume trade is the focus that will be revealed using the historical method with an environmentalhistory approach. Thus, the environment becomes an aspect that is also discussed in changing people’s lives. Thisis different from the study of pepper which focuses more on the political-economic aspects. The results showedthat the production and trade system of perfumery spices is engaged with the values, traditions, and rules of thelocal forester of Dayak as the main actors, both as individuals and groups

Abstract

Banda Neira is one of the islands in Central Maluku. A small area far from the district and provincial capitals. Banda Neira has abundant natural resources. At least in this small area, it is now famous for two natural resources which are the main commodities of the community. The first is its maritime potential, so that this area is made by the government to become one of the national fish barns. No wonder the Banda Sea holds a lot of fishery potential, especially tuna, skipjack, momar, grouper and many other types. The second potential is the result of nutmeg plantations. Nutmeg is one of the main commodities of the people of Banda Neira. Even the special Pala from Banda carries a long history for the Banda people.

Abstract

The historical relationships between Makassans and Aboriginal people that took place as early as the 17th century until the early 20th century through the trepang industry in the northern coast, North Australia, is still unknown to many people in Makassar, South Sulawesi. There are various factors involved in the lack of information about the shared history, including the absence of the story of trepangers as part of Indonesian maritime heritage history in school textbooks and the insufficient materials and narratives on this topic in provincial and city museums. This paper examines the potential roles of Makassan artists and cultural activists to tell the story after engaging with ancient trepang industry-related cultural and art projects. It also investigates their changed perceptions about Australia and Indonesia both culturally and historically after their participation in art and cultural projects.
