Jurnal Masyarakat dan Budaya (JMB) or Journal of Society and Culture is a peer-reviewed journal that aims to be an authoritative academic source on the study of society and culture. We publish original research papers, review articles, case studies, and book reviews focusing on Indonesian society, cultural phenomena, and other related topics. A manuscript describing society and culture outside Indonesia is expected to be analyzed comparatively with the issues and context in Indonesia. All papers will be reviewed rigorously at least by two referees. JMB is published three times a year, in April, August , and December.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has plunged Indonesian society and high socio-economic vulnerability. The government through policies and programs tries to overcome the impact of the pandemic and restore people's lives. Many other parties have contributed to handling the pandemic, but they are still sectoral. In its implementation, there is still a role gap, especially the role of the government is more prominent, while the participation of various parties, especially the community is still minimal. In fact, these steps have not yielded maximum results. This can be seen from the increasing number of pandemic exposures. One of the strategies for handling a pandemic that is quite effective is the effort to accommodate social capital within the pentahelix framework. This study shows that mutual cooperation and local leadership are the dominant features of social capital practices in Indonesia. In this case, the practice of mutual cooperation, both in an organic and systematic sense, is a thread of synergy and integration among stakeholders. Therefore, packaging and strengthening social capital in policies with the pentahelix framework is the "ultimate arrow" in handling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This article explains neglected the ecological awareness during Covid-19 pandemic. The global community focused  more on increasing public health awareness than reflecting and reviewing the forgotten space—the affected environment. The affected environment consists of the social and the natural environment. However, ecological awareness recognizes both. Added to that, the Anthropocene is a marker of ecological crisis and environment has become less habitable due to mass-anthropogenic activities in indirectly determining the notion of ecological awareness. Ecological awareness is essential for realizing a new normal society based on transformative movement and adaptive change. This research uses a literature review and a philosophical approach to reformulate ecological awareness in the post-pandemic world.  its idealization must recognize the diversity of ecological awareness in terms of social transformation. There are several cultural strategies to build ecological awareness. First, idealization level concerning concept or world-view toward ‘what is ecological awareness?’. Second, the formulation level for post-pandemic ecological awareness formulation. Third, the real political movement oriented towards implementation. Therefore, the value of ecological awareness as a cultural strategy expects  to recognize non-human existence, to avoid class discrimination and impartiality towards nature and society in the post-pandemic world.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia was widely discussed on social media, such as the Twitter. The widespread use of social media was followed by the emergence of buzzers with their goals and interests as well as  the ideology they promote. One of the buzzers is @ permadiaktivis1, in this case, who has confirmed himself a buzzer. This qualitative research refers to Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis by repeating the discussion on the textual dimension, the discourse practice, and the sociocultural dimension. Data obtained from tweets on the Twitter account @ permadiaktivis1 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Buzzer in this study is positioned as a key opinion leader who is assumed able to polarize information related to the Covid-19 pandemic. the representation of the pandemic imaged as something negative is to negate the government's mismanagement in making policies related to pandemics. The tweets never blame the government for the policies issued, and insinuations and invitations became a pattern for tweets. The vaccination’s policy is packaged that teases those who doubt vaccinations or those who refuse it. The Buzzer phenomenon will impact the polarization of the information about COVID-19. Besides, several tweets from Buzzer show that they play significant role to support government policies.

Abstract

This research paper aims to explore the Indonesian Baha’is community and its conceptual discourse on resilience and social solidarity in religious actions during global pandemic of covid-19. Although the Baha’i faith is not registered as an official religion in Indonesia like Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc., the Baha’is community and its religious as well as social movement during covid-19 is interesting to analyze. As a new world religion promoting the principle and the moral value on unity in diversity, Baha’is community in Indonesia started to organize digital activism to build solidarity among interfaith and religious minority groups like penghayat kepercayaan. Religion and solidarity in this context refer to a Germany sociologist, Emile Durkheim (1858-1917), on his functionalism perspective stating that religion must have social function and solidarity. Durkheim demonstrated the function of religion can be understood as collective action as moral value in our society. Religion not only has a meaning but also a function, which is collectively built by society, based on collective consciousness. By digital ethnographic approach, this research paper tries to examine how the Baha’is community and other minority groups in Indonesia cope the global pandemic of covid-19 while activities have moved to virtual and digital space. It is also interesting to perceive how resilience of the Baha’is community in existing religious dakwah throughout digital activism. The Baha'is community has shown resilience by not only protecting their own groups, but also for the larger community by distributing assistance and fostering social cohesion regardless of ethnicity, language, race, or religion on the basis of humanity.

Abstract

The social media is assumed as canal to get information during the pandemic of COVID-19, however it also indicate the landscape of the media. During the pandemic, social media produces information, however several are inaccurate, therefore it coins new terms such as infodemic. On the other hand, government afraid that it might cause confusion and questioning the legitimate information for the economic and health reasons. The other important assumption is due to its popularity, the social media function as means of education and socialization. Therefore the goals of the study are, first is showing information as education and socialization or as infodemic; second is show actors dominate the social media discussion; third is to map the changing of the media’s landscape. Object of study is twitter during the three stages of PSBB (Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar) or large scale social restriction; the first, the transition and the full scale. The result shows that civil society as well as government educate and socialize to prevent the spread of pandemic. However, there are several unpopular infodemic and seldom re-Tweet. Individual plays important role rather that the media indusry, and it indicate the transition period of the media, where the media industry plays important role in the social media’s information due to its dominant Tweet.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper is aimed to revisit the existence terminology of Bid’ah Hasanah (Good Innovation) in the public and academic sphere as a counter discourse against the dominance of established meaning of Bid’ah which in terms of Islamic Sharia is interpreted as an act of misguidance (Bid’ah Dalalah). Counter discourse is a way of thinking that opposes an institutionalized discourse. In this context, we try to investigate the emergence of this term and describe how it is expressed as an opposing thought against the negative meaning of Bid'ah which was discursively long-established in the public and academic sphere by conducting the grounded approach. The data collected is taken from a mini survey and some specific discourses related to this topic such as the discussions in some chapters of the Islamic teaching textbook, and discourses from the online sources including social media and some websites affiliated with certain religious groups. The result shows that the terminology of Bid’ah Hasanah is emerged and echoed by traditional religious groups to label the non-exclusive worships (Ghairu Mahdhah) that originally don’t require any special rules in its implementation. According to them, this term is retrieved and interpreted from several Hadiths and the words of the Prophet’s companions. In the public and academic sphere, this term is still being roughly debated by some religious groups, mainly the Salafis and the traditionals, due to their differences in the methodology of meaning to this term. The Salafis prioritize the textual rigorous Sharia meaning contained in this term, whereas traditional parties put forward the literal and original meaning in understanding this term.

Abstract

This paper discusses the issue of citizenship of the Bajo ethnic minority group on Kera Island, Kupang Regency,East Nusa Tenggara Province. The general question in this study is what are the implications of state politics forcitizenship in the case of the Bajo tribe on Kera Island?. To answer this question, the concept of citizenship is usedas an analytical tool. This research uses qualitative research, with a case study research design. This researchconcludes that the Bajo people as a minority group in East Nusa Tenggara find themselves in a dilemma. Onthe one hand, the state considers the Bajo people on Kera Island as squatters who are not entitled to citizenshipstatus, therefore they do not get their rights, especially with regard to basic services. But on the other hand, theBajo people are still involved in the electoral process to determine people’s representatives. In this condition, theBajo people feel that their citizenship status is only given as long as it relates to the interests of the state and isforgotten again when the state no longer has an interest.

Abstract

This research is based on the lack of understanding of the meaning of a ritual and prayer which often causes conflict in society. Accusations of infidelity against someone are often used as an excuse for disliking and even attacking groups of accused. Java, which is full of rituals and variations in prayer, is one of the objects of indecency and friction in society. This research reveals the existence of God's role in Javanese prayer. The study was conducted by exploring the meaning of prayer, the types of Javanese prayer, the concept of God in Javanese prayer, and the ethical implications of prayer. This research is a library research regarding the concepts that exist in society. In order to obtain the research results, reading sources were collected, reference reading, description, classification, analysis and conclusion. The results of this study shows that prayer is a greeting or an expression of desire in the form of a statement of the existence of God or a supernatural entity, worship, request, submission, gratitude and an expression of gratitude. Javanese prayer is divided into two, namely the Slametan prayer and mantra. Most Javanese prayers, especially the Slametan prayers and mantra prayers that are good in nature, contain elements of the name of God, while others contain elements of the Prophet, companions of the Prophet, religious propagators, and ancestors. This means belief in God's power and respect for those who play a role in life. Prayers that tend to be negative in nature indicate that they do not mention the name of God and respected life figures. Slametan prayer is positive and communal, contains ethics, and also hopes for the good of the prayer person and all humans.

Abstract

Many previous studies examine social forestry in Indonesia from 2016-2020 which describing the factors relate to the implementation. Beyond the previous studies, this paper clustering and mapping the factors through access theory and further complement access theory by a collaborative approach in the social forestry implementation context. Qualitative desk research is used to examine 39 papers with Nvivo 12. The result shows there are two elements of the four elements of structure-relational access mechanism (SRAM) that have positive effects on social forestry implementation, while three elements of the five elements of the SRAM element give a negative effect. In turn, there are various unclustered factors which not a part of SRAM that affects social forestry implementation both positive or negative. These unclustered factors are the blank spaces of access theory which complemented by a collaborative approach, there are “participation” and “equity” which supported by “effective communication”. With a collaborative approach, the scope becomes wider that not only analyze in individual scope, but also in organizational scope, and the benefit can be seen by outside stakeholder through community contribution in social forestry implementation.
