Abstract

Haze pollution is one of the major environmental problems in the ASEAN region. Every year in dry season, forest fires occur in Indonesia creating havoc at domestic level and regionally affected neighbouring countries. This fire is caused by human activities in burning land/forest for plantation and/or agriculture. This paper argues that transboundary haze pollution cannot be solved solely on a regional level. It needs comprehensive efforts and co-operation from regional, international, national and local level. An improvement on both regional and national legal framework and law enforcement in addressing haze pollution problem is needed.

Abstract

The beginning of the 16th century can be seen as the time when the history of the two big powers in the Malay world–Majapahit and Malaka–had ended and the period of “stable instability” began. That was the time when the new emerging kingdoms were involved in the highly unstable relationship. Despite of the conflicts and uncertainties, the Malay literary tradition began during this period. Sejarah Melayu (Sulalat us Salihin) or Malay Annals is one of the most famous manuscripts in Malay literary tradition. It was written by Tun Sri Lanang, the Bendahara (“prime minister”) of Johor (a kingdom on Malay Peninsula), who later became the district-head of Samalanga, Aceh- Darussalam. The manuscript does not only describe the history of the Malay kingdoms–from the time of Palembang through the establishment of Malaka to the crisis of the Sultanate of Johor– but also discusses the ethics of power. This manuscript can be compared with Taj us Salatin, written in 1603. The basic foundation of power is justice. However, can the sense of justice be used to oppose the ruler, who has failed to perform the justice? Then, how are the dilemma between justice and rebellion be solved? Keywords: sirna ilang krta ning bhumi, Majapahit & Malaka, Sejarah Melayu, traditional historiography, political theory of Malay, justice and rebellion

Abstract

Tagi jere is a ritual conducted by the Kao people in North Halmahera. It is a pilgrimage to a tomb (jere) believed as Shekh Masyur tomb, a religious traveller from Baghdad coming to Kao to preach Islam. The Kao people believe that the sacred tomb of Shekh Mansyur can be a mediation (Arabic: tawasul) to gain blessing and luck in order to achieve their hopes and dreams. This article describes the ritual process, both from cultural as well as social aspects, in which the Tribal Council (Dewan Adat) and Religious Council (Badan Syara’) play important roles. This article also draws the ritual from the mythology aspect and the social solidarity between the Kao people and other ethnic groups surrounding the tomb. Keywords: tagi jere, ethnic Kao, holy tomb, Tribal Council, Religious Council

Abstract

The present qualitative study explores the rationalization of 24(twenty-four) men reported to the police of conducting sexual offense, to justify their sexual offense or transgression. Denials vary from absolute denial, minimization, such as claiming of having mutual consent sex, denial of victim harm, and a rarer phenomenon but apparent in two subjects, a kind of depersonalization. More specific denials relate to gender-based rationalization is prevalent, such as having unharmonious relationship with wife therefore they need other women for sexual outlet, or the girls are not ‘good girl’. Very strong rationalization is related to the discourse on ‘female chastity’ in which offenders justify their behavior as OK since their target subjects are not ‘good girls’, be evidenced by they are not virgin anymore, hang out at night, or have relation with other men. Offenders who are in relationships with their victims need to prove the chastity of their female partner, or felt suspicious and angry about the past relationships of the girls therefore forcing sex or conducting sexual assault. Offender might adopt a ‘professional’, a ‘hero’, a ‘revenger’ as well as a ‘victim’ role. All cannot be separated from the cultural context of Indonesia and are explaining the beliefs of male offenders about men as superior and having authority over women. Keywords: sexual offense; female chastity; cultural context

Abstract

Jagir River is one of the three important rivers in Surabaya, which provides the basic need of clean water for the citizens of Surabaya and its surroundings. However, the water has low quality, proved by the limp, dead, and floating fish on the river. In fact, some people still use it for their daily lives, from washing their clothes, bathing, defecating, to ablution. The question is why those people are still willing to use the poor water there for their daily needs. Does not the government perceive it as being polluted with various wastes? Using an ethnoecological approach, this paper aims to discuss the different perceptions between the government and the society about the river as well as the water quality of Jagir River. For the government, this river has two functions, namely (1) to divide and to control the water volume of Mas River in order to prevent the flood in Surabaya; and (2) to provide water for Perusahaan Daerah Air Minum/Regional Company for Drinking Water (PDAM) Surabaya in order to be produced as drinking water. Meanwhile, for those living in the riverside, Jagir River has four patterns of usage. Those are (1) spraying and watering, (2) cleaning, (3) performing ablution, and (4) taking recreation and earning a living. Keywords: perception, society, government, worthy-usable, water, Kali Jagir

Abstract

Human trafficking is commonly associated with women due to the fact that the majority of the victims are women. In reality, both men and women have been the victims of human trafficking through various exploitative and abusive treatments. This paper aims to describe human trafficking activities across the border areas in Indonesia based on the gender perspective. Several aspects of human trafficking are discussed, such as the pattern, the process and the impact of trafficking activities on the victim's life. Data and information for this article come from the reviews of several studies and scientific papers related to the human trafficking, particularly in Indonesia. This study shows that the males and females trafficked victims have different experience of abuse in a range of sectors, and therefore required different kind of support and protection. This paper aims to contribute in finding the solutions for the improvement of the existing human trafficking intervention. Keywords: human trafficking, gender perspective, Indonesia

Abstract

This paper is a reflection of a concept that becomes a central concern in the study of anthropology, namely culture. The concept of culture is interesting to be debated because the author assumes that the meaning of culture is rich and highly dependent on the paradigm of the person or group of people, who interpret it. By using the memory of life experiences and supported by every day observation as the data, the author aims to understand what culture is. Nevertheless, the life trajectories that are still being experienced today still leave the question about the culture itself. Keywords: life experience, reflection, culture, autoethnography
