Abstract

The interrelationship among religious communities in a particular society is complex. On many occasions, one community becomes dominant owing to several societal factors, and other communities remain on the edge. Religion in Bangladesh has a complex history. Besides, digital media as a new phenomenon has met religion recently, although this issue is often overlooked. As a result, no formal academic endeavor is seen in Bangladesh to date which focuses on the emerging digital Islamic public sphere and online religious communication. The present study tries to bridge this gap. Through careful observation of the digital public, their used contents, and produced cases of contestation, this article finds some exclusive communication patterns. First, communication among religious communities is unequal where Muslims dominate the discourse. Second, Islamic contents are more frequent in cyberspace than the contents of other religions. Third, Muslims produce digital media-based disinformation to marginalize religious minorities in both online and offline spheres.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in succeeding the Indonesian’s public diplomacy through peace agenda for Afghanistan. Cooperation and partnership between Indonesia and Afghanistan entered a new phase with a focus on the conflict reconciliation and capacity building agendas. Indonesia becomes Afghanistan's top choice to become a peace broker between the Afghan government and the Taliban, since no assistance has been offered by other Muslim countries and the Indonesian’s property of Islamic ‘Wasathiyah’ diplomacy has been attractive. Thus, this research will answer why is NU more favorable than its similar moderate organization, Muhammadiyah, and what are the main roles of NU in supporting the government’s agenda. By using interview and collecting secondary data and implementing soft power theory framework, multitrack diplomacy, and public diplomacy, this study found that there are three important roles hold by NU in this case. First, NU as an actor who has credibility in the field of Islamic Wasathiyah discourse, second, NU acts as a strategic collaborative partner of the Indonesian government by engaging in several official state programs, and third, NU carries out its public diplomacy role by initiating independent programs for Afghanistan.

Despite studies in the realm of Islamic education teaching has been extensively conducted, the application of Islamic education curriculum in Indonesian secondary schools receives scant academic attention from the previous researchers. To fill this void, the present exploratory case study aims to explain practices of Islamic education enacted as a nationally-mandated school subject in secondary schools and to explore to what extent the Indonesian government supports Islamic education teachers to handle this compulsory school subject. Four Islamic education teachers of junior secondary schools volunteered to participate in this research. Data were garnered through classroom observation and in-depth interviews. Framed in thematic analysis, this study reports that the syllabus, lesson plan, learning resources, classroom-based practices, and authentic assessment required thorough concern. In response to this, the government support was needed to promote the best practices, i.e. teacher professional development and provision of sufficient school facilities. To policy authorities in Indonesia, the study recommends facilitating Islamic education teachers with sustainable professional development and redesigning the government-prescribed textbooks to foster teacher creativity in their teaching and learning processes.

Abstract

This article explains the legal system existing in the Pesantren, particularly in the term of takzir called perceived as non-human punishment contradictory with human rights. This research took place in Pondok Pesantren Edi Mancoro (PPEM) Salatiga with inclusive and tolerant characters, and voicing religious moderation. PPEM has had alumni becoming national figures. This study employed Lawrence Friedman’s legal system theory requiring the functioning of law in three components: legal structure, legal substance, and legal culture. This research employed qualitative method with data source obtained from field work study with depth interview technique and descriptive interpretive analysis. The result of research showed that Pesantren Edi Mancoro has legal system component as required by Friedman. In the context of takzir, there is a shift in the takzir (punishment) application method to evidently undisciplined students or those committing crime. Takzir contributes to creating personality (noble character) of santri in undertaking life post-pesantren. Takzir actually has educative values not contradictory with human rights. So, takzir in pesantren fulfills all components of legal system suggested by Friedman. Out of the three components, legal culture is the basic components of takzir functioning in pesantren, either internal or external legal culture.

Abstract

This research is aimed to dismantle and to reveal the religious moderation values from a local legacy of a Muslim cleric/kyai’s reflective thought written in a Javanese-Arabic poem (syiir) “Tanpo Waton” authored by KH. Muhammad Nizam As-Shofa, a local kyai and a spiritual master of the Naqsyabandiyyah Kholidiyyah sufi order. What remains interesting in this syiir is that it has been inaugurated by the national figure of pluralism as well as the fourth president of Indonesia, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) through his popular melodious chanting. This is a qualitative-descriptive research. Data collection in this study uses documentation, with a content and discourse analysis technique through the lens of religious moderation concept as the currently Indonesian grand narrative campaign for religious harmony. The analysis then entails the production of data in which there are textual and contextual meaning implied within the syiir which emphasizes how important it is to stick with the values of religious moderation for building Indonesian harmony and strengthening national unity within diversity. The religious moderation narrative within the syiir indeed embeds the values of nationalism, tolerance, non-violence and local wisdom respect. Such values are among the pivotal elements to teach and disseminate towards Indonesian generations for the sake of Indonesian harmony.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the concept of maqasid sharia-finding method according to Tahir ibn Ashur. It argues that Ibn Ashur’s approach to search for maqasid sharia revolves around three methods. The first is inductive method. This method can be done through the induction of many ‘illat (reasons) that have the same hikmah (goals) and the induction of many dalil (provisions) that have the same ‘illat (reasons). The second is al-bayan al-nashshi method. This method refers to understanding of explicit provisions (dalil) in the Qur'an as they leave no room for alternative interpretations according to Arabic language traditions. The third is sunnah mutawatirah method. This method is divided into mutawatir ma’nawi and mutawatir 'amali. Mutawatir ma'nawi is an inference resulted from testimonies of many shahaba (the Prophet's companions) concerning a Prophet's particular action. Actions that are considered mutawatir ma'nawi include those that are clear, bright and axiomatic in nature (ma'lum min al-din bi al-dharurah), or at least close to ma'lum min al-din bi al-dharurah. Meanwhile, mutawatir ‘amali is an inference resulted from a testimony of one shahaba concerning actions always repeated by the Prophet.

Abstract

This paper discusses the renewal of Islam by Paderi in Minangkabau’s community, west Sumatera, Indonesia. Seventy years after the Paderi movement stopped because young scholars known as the Youth Generation (YG) continued Dutch colonial pressure with original models and characteristics. To delve into this problem, a historical research method was required to test and analyze the vital records and relics of the yesteryear. This research is qualitative. The research and discussion found: first, the reform in Islam consisted of 2 indicators, namely (1) the returns of Islamic purity to the guidance of the Qur'an and Hadiths, and (2) modernization as a representation of the youth movement. Second, the violence by the Paderi was inappropriate if related to Minangkabau’s cultures which were tolerant and familial. The first Islamization process in Minangkabau was also never penetrated by a power of politics such as war. Third, the conflict had triggered a vivacious and dynamic religious discourse. We could see this from many meetings and debates held both during the Paderi and during Youth Generation. Besides, various schools had appeared, publishing books and magazines from each generation to socialize and make a struggle for religious understanding.
