This study analyzes the opposition of the social, political and religious classes in Arab society at the beginning of the period of Islamic presence. This study is qualitative research whose data is obtained through books, journals and other documents and is discussed with content analysis. The result of this study proved that the early Arab society in the presence of Islam valued wealth as a measure of social strata. Hierarchically, the bourgeoisie was the Arab ruler, while the proletariat and slaves became the second class of society which for many years was always under the pressure of the employer / ruler. The presence of Muhammad Saw (d. 632 AD) by calling for the establishment of social and legal justice was able to attract the proletariat and slaves to convert to Islam and jointly carry out social status resistance. The narrations of the Qur'an also support the existence of class equality between the rich and the poor, the ruler and the people, which distinguishes them only the level of faith. This kind of millenarian movement makes Islam stronger with the spirit of humanism.

This article aims at examining forms and characteristics of Turkish nationalism under Erdoganism, a relatively new term which has been devoted to leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The notion of nationalism has not been the main focus on the full range of the political rhetoric and the social interactions demonstrated by Erdogan. However, generally considered as a fundamental element in Turkey's social and political development, nationalism always remains a hot topic which cannot be separated from social dynamics and society itself. For this reason, nationalism will endlessly continue to look for a dynamic form and, at the same time, becomes an instrument of the ruling to control the distribution of power. Erdoganism itself has various distinct approaches towards the narrative and development of Turkish nationalism. This research used a qualitative approach with discourse analysis method by elaborating symbols, languages, writings, and speeches demonstrated by Erdogan in the political activities. The findings of this research are expected to be able to comprehend nationalism of Erdoganism.

This study aims to understand in-depth the representation of Coastal Javanese Islam in Pekalongan with cultural approach. This approach puts Pekalongan people onto its social world center, in order to understand how they identify and interpret the world, particularly the articulation of economic activity protected by culture and mediated by Islam tenet. The research method used was qualitative one. Data was obtained through observation and in-depth interview, and analyzed descriptively, by focusing on social practice of batik business performer as the basic vehicle, meaning competition place, and contributing to Islam. The result of research shows that the role of Islam in Pekalongan social life is very strong and dominant represented in dialectical Islam with the manifestation of symbolic spiritualism. Therefore, Islam functions not merely as an effective means of solving life problem, including batik business, confirming Geertz’s argument that religion serves not merely as ethical foundation, but moral vitality source. Culture is an important power in social life. This finding declines Weber’s thesis that Islam does not have theological affinity supporting economic growth, because empirical fact in Pekalongan Indonesia shows that Islam spirituality becomes an effective means of solving business problem.

This study aims to examine civic engagement through inter-communal ties that occur in one of the hamlets in Indonesia as a representation of a peaceful area. The inter-communal ties that occur in everyday life and are institutionalized show an effort to unite society in diversity. This is important to scrutinize as an applied example for other regions in Indonesia on a small scale about addressing diversity in one region to create peace starting at the grassroots level. The community and religious leaders in Thekelan Hamlet, Batur Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency, jointly carry out anjangsana activities that can invite the community to unite in commemorating the holidays of each religion in turn. The people of Thekelan Hamlet are a heterogeneous society that adheres to Islam, Buddhism, Christian, and Catholicism. This study uses an ethnographic approach in observing, documenting, and conducting in-depth interviews with informants. The results showed that anjangsana was an institutionalized daily activity. The grassroots community together with religious leaders designed these activities to increase inter-communal ties between communities and maintain peace. The recommendation for further research is to expand the scope of civic engagement studies by analyzing inter-communal ties in regions throughout Indonesia to find appropriate ways to implement peace efforts. This article discusses the function of fatwa, specifically the Tarjih Fatwa in the field of family law. So far, Islamic law is still considered not dynamic and is still limited to only one legal function, which is nahi munkar (social control) yet the function of amar makruf (social engineering) which emphasizes the suggestion to perform good deeds in a general and practical sense is still not optimal. This results in the impression that Islamic law seems to lose its relevance. This article aims to explain the function of Tarjih's fatwa for the community. The study in this article is a literature review using a sociological approach. The results indicated that the law (fatwa) is no longer considered as an independent variable that is separated from other elements, but is a dependent variable, as are social norms and other cultural identities. Tarjih fatwa is aimed at directing society to the desired goals, eliminating inappropriate habits, and creating new patterns of behavior. In other words, the function of Tarjih Fatwa can be used as a means of manipulating society (law as a tool of social engineering).
