Abstract

This study is intended to find out the students’ problems and their solutions in writing argumentative essays.  The subjects of this study were the fourth-semester students of English Education study program, Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, University of PGRI Wiranegara in the academic year 2019-2020. This study used Byrne’s classification in 1995 about writing problems, namely psychological, linguistic, and cognitive. This uses descriptive quantitative design. The instruments were documentation of the students’ writing tasks and interviews. The result shows the almost all students have no problems in making thesis statements and refutations for their argumentative essay regarding gender issue. The students’ psychological problems are anxiety, nervousness, the feeling of pressure in timed writing and perfect work, a negative expectation in writing, and low self-confidence.  For the linguistic problems, the result from both data indicated that students faced problems in tenses, word-class, word formation, the use of the article, and word error. While the cognitive problems faced by the students are being ignorant in the use of punctuation, short knowledge in giving appropriate examples and details in the body of the essay, and lack of knowledge in writing reference. The solutions proposed by the students, among others are to have more readings on the topic, to be self-motivated learners, to propose untimed writing to the lecturer, and to use writing tools applications.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to identify and analyze how the aspects of conversational interactions are realized in the conversation. In collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher uses documentation method and qualitative content analysis. The utterances which used by the interviewer and interviewees are as the data of this research, while the video of the interview which downloaded from Youtube with 29:44 minutes is as the source of data in this research. The data are analyzed by using Paltridge theory. This research results are, five aspects of conversational interactions are used by the interviewer (Peter Vanillin) such as, Opening Conversation, Adjacency Pairs, Preference Organization, Turn Taking and Closing Conversation, while the interviewer does not use Feedback and Repair. However, five of seven aspects are used by the interviewees (Paul Kelly and Julia Gillard) such as, Adjacency Pairs, Preference Organization, Turn Taking, Feedback and Repair, while the interviewees do not use Opening and Closing Conversation. Thus, all of seven aspects of conversational interactions are used with different realization. The realization of those aspects of conversational interactions used by the interviewer and interviewees are different. The interviewer does not use Feedback and Repair, while the interviewees do not use Opening and Closing Conversation.

Abstract

At this time the whole world is being attacked by a virus called the Corona Virus or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a type of virus that attacks the human respiratory system. This disease due to viral infection is called COVID-19. COVID-19 is a polemic that causes concern for the community due to its rapid spread and even causes many deaths, including in Indonesia. The condition of this social situation makes a lot of news done, one of which is related to prevention with social distancing published by Detikcom. This study aims to conduct a critical analysis of articles about COVID-19 on Detikcom. This research uses a descriptive method. The object of the research is an article entitled "Tentang Social Distance, Cara Pemerintah Cegah Penyebaran Virus Corona" released on Monday, March 16, 2020, by Detikcom. Data analysis was performed using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. The results show that the text in the discourse has been selected using the appropriate words to represent the expectations of a social distancing policy and is also able to represent the social conditions of the panicked community with the outbreak of COVID-19. The discourse in the text has also been able to provide feedback in the form of the social conditions of the community which can be a little calm with the existence of the policies that have been released as well as the direct role of the government and the credibility of Detikcom. The ideology is related to influencing society in implementing social distancing for the success of Government programs. Thus, this research will foster public confidence in dealing with this coronavirus and influence to implement social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Students’ degree of interest, attention, and curiosity are some indications of students’ learning engagement which are very important to be noted down by every teacher. Knowing what makes students focused on what they are learning or doing in the class will be a great assistance for teacher in creating meaningful activities which at the end promotes their engagement and motivation. This study was intended to find out students’ learning engagement during a writing class which was designed as a task based learning. The students were assigned to some collaborative activities in composing writings. The researcher observed students’ activities especially during the pre and while writing and found out that one reason among others that made students unable to actively engaged at the beginning of the activity was failing to understand the teacher’s instructions. This problem, however, was solved once they understood the tasks clearly and able to enjoy what they were doing in class. In other words, students’ engagement could happen if the activities are meaningful for them.

Abstract

This research was conducted to look for the roles of the English teacher forum (MGMP) in Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia as an integral part of their teacher professional development (TPD). The abbreviation of MGMP stands for Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran or English Teacher Forum in the context of this study. The research involved fifteen English teachers from various accessible schools. The phenomenological method was used in this research to understand the teachers’ experiences of the contribution of MGMP towards their TPD. Further, the research utilized a questionnaire and interviews to collect the data from the participants. The three-step data analysis from Ary, Jacsobs, Sorensen, & Razavieh (2010) namely familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing were employed to validate the data. The results demonstrate that MGMP gives a lot of benefits to the TPD. Nevertheless, some aspects should be improved, such as conducting research on teachers’ training needs, providing sustainable post-training supervision, and creating simple and efficient systems related to the school administration. For future research direction, further studies should focus on improving those aforementioned factors.

Abstract

Due to globalization, intercultural competence becomes one of the prominent competences in English teaching. Unfortunately, the current condition, the COVID-19 pandemic happened may not lead the intercultural language teaching run as expected because it should be moved to an online setting.  Through combining qualitative and quantitative research methods with questionnaires and interviews, this study aimed to unravel the teachers' competence and the challenges and opportunities of intercultural language teaching during the current situation. This study concluded that most of the teachers' intercultural competence was deemed moderate. Furthermore, some challenges found comprised the aspects of internet access and students' psychological aspect, such as attitudes toward intercultural language teaching and learning conducted in an online classroom. Meanwhile, the opportunities found comprised the aspect of language skills, attitudes, and the other supporting skill such as critical thinking development.

Abstract

This study is to find out the effect of COVID 19 pandemic on English proficiency .This research is an experimental research using quantitative approach. The students in higher education are as parts of population in this research. A random sampling technique is used to decide the sampling size. The subjects of this study are 36 students. The data are analyzed by paired t test technique.  The result of the study shows sig (p) is significant. It is smaller than 0.05 (it is 0.000). The difference can be considered true. The mean is 59.30 before COVID 19; 49.33 is the mean during COVID 19. It indicates that the students at higher education with before COVID 19 pandemic have better English aptitude than in COVID 19 virus. It implies that the teachers and members of educational society in higher education be supposed to assist out students with the suitable atmosphere to be of assistance students with consequential input in addition to offer students with interface in an attempt to the regularity of experiencing English; additionally, it is suggested that the members of scholar society are being release significant input for the students.

Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize the attitude of Javanese youth towards their use of local language. There are two research questions proposed in this study such as namely: 1) how is the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language, 2) what are the factors that effect on their attitudes. The objectives of this study are to define the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language and to discover why they are behaving so. Furthermore, this study adopted qualitative method applying descriptive analysis and selected the students of English Department of Batch 2014 Batch in Brawijaya University as the participants. The results showed that the subjects indicated showed both positive and negative attitudes towards the use of Javanese language depending on the context. The positive attitude was frequently revealed on questions related to their efforts in conserving Javanese as the local language, while the negative attitude was mostly reflected on the statements associated with their language preference in daily life. Moreover, there are several factors affecting their language attitudes namely the Javanese language internal system, social and traditional, and the prestige and the power of language.

Abstract

The focus of the current study was to investigate the perceptions of English as a second language learners on using computer assisted language learning (CALL) for improving academic writing skills. The study was conducted for thirteen weeks with 82 second year undergraduates from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in Sri Lanka. Switching Replication was used for the research design. The data were analyzed using mix method approach. The findings indicate that the participants preferred the in-class environment more than the CALL environment for academic writing skills.  Participants’ lack of experience in CALL, poor writing and vocabulary skills and the negative interference from the technical issues were some of the issues that had a negative effect on the participants in the CALL environment. Yet the success of the intervention both in the first and second phases indicates the effectiveness of CALL for developing academic writing skills

Abstract

This paper aims to observe the phonological features of onomatopoeia in children’s songs which contribute to foreign language acquisition. The study is a descriptive qualitative involving 24 full-time mothers who introduce English to their toddlers through various English songs. Data were collected through digital questionnaires followed up by semi-structured interviews to clarify what the parents had answered in the digital questionnaire. The study reveals numerous onomatopoeic words that acquired by the toddlers because of some factors, 1) the similarities of phonological features between English and Indonesian onomatopoeic words, and 2) the large quantities of language input in their listening habit.
