Abstract

This research aims to identify and classify Culturally Specific Items (CSIs) of a bilingual novel titled Edensor by using Newmark’s taxonomy and to analyze CSIs classification by using translation techniques of  Mollina and Albir. Further, this research purposes to know the accurateness of the translation. This research design is conducted with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The data of the research are taken from a novel namely Edensor which is written by Andrea Hirata, and the novel is translated from Indonesian to English by John Colombo. The researchers collect the data by using techniques of library research. The data is collected by identifying and classifying of CSIs in the novel. Then, the data is analyzed based on the translation techniques. The results show that amplification technique is used for 16 data (48.49%), borrowing technique is used for 6 data (18.18%), calque technique is used for 2 data (6.06%), description technique is used for 1 data (3.03%), generalization technique is used for 7 data (21.21%), and reduction technique is used for 1 data (3.03%). The mostly used in translation technique of CSIs is amplification technique by giving additional information, because it can make a clear for the English readers. Further, the accurateness of the CSIs translation shows 19 data (57.58%) for accurate translation, 10 data (30.30%) for less-accurate translation, and 4 data (12.12%) for inaccurate translation.

Abstract

This study investigates, through a qualitative approach, code-switching practices of young Moroccans in their Facebook interactions. The purpose behind this research is to analyse the functions of code-switching in Facebook comments, that were extracted from 30 Facebook accounts, and find out whether the choice of switching between languages is a conscious act that serves certain communicative functions, or it is a random choice made by young Moroccan Facebook users to compensate for a linguistic incompetence. Functions were coded and analysed using a grounded theory. Results achieved through the analysis of code-switching functions that occurred in the participants’ Facebook comments revealed that code-switching appeared, mainly, to serve notions of quotation, addressee specification, availability, principle of economy, indicating emotions, clarification, emphasis, habitual expressions, creativity and euphemism. Therefore, code-switching in young Moroccans’ Facebook comments is considered as a communication strategy that aims at enhancing their interactions in Facebook and making them more fluid and vibrant.

Abstract

There has been an arising issue related to the correlation between language and social among social communities in United Kingdom and America. Both of the social communities usually employ different language varieties which are in accordance to the position of social class. In England, the higher social community tends to use Received Pronunciation while the lower social community tends to use estuary accent. On the other hand, in America, the higher social community tends to use Standard English while the lower social community tends to use African American English. The present study primarily focuses on the relationship between language and social class in United Kingdom and America in which the association of the language and social class is described qualitatively through reviewing any literatures related to the aforementioned issue. After examining the data, it is showed that, nowadays, even though Received Pronunciation is considered as the standard English in United Kingdom, the speakers of the language are only 3%. Furthermore, the Estuary accent is now used by the broadcasting station even though in the past they only used the Received Pronunciation. In addition, African American Language, which is considered as the language of lower social class, in the present day is also used by white people as upper class in America

Abstract

Sufficient attention to the second language (L2) learners' individual differences (IDs) should be given in instructional design as IDs affect differing results of individual learner’s ultimate L2 achievement. To that, this paper presents an example of a lesson plan developed using Willis’ Task-based Learning (TBL). Willis’ TBL framework is selected as it is argued that the framework offers more advantages than Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP) does in terms of the communicative goals and accommodating learners’ affect. The lesson plan is informed by the findings and pedagogical implications of numerous studies on IDs suggesting that L2 instruction should be best designed to accommodate learners’ IDs, for example, but not limited to, minimising learners’ anxiety and boosting their confidence in speaking, through providing a psychologically safe environment stimulating learners’ risk-taking behaviours in L2 learning. Rationales of each stage in the lesson plan are provided to better illustrate how the lesson plan is manifested in the classroom concerning learners' ego and feeling.

It can be considered as the grammar of words. Meanwhile, Syntax discusses how the sentence is structured. The objectives of the research are to find out inflectional morphemes, derivational morphemes, and the patterns of clause structure which are found in political news on online Tempo in January 2019. This research used qualitative design and content analysis design where the source of data was article political news on Online Tempo in January, 2019. The major instrument of this research is the researchers themselves because they actively obtained and clustered the data and the secondary data was data sheet. The findings revealed three types of morphosyntactic, firstly, the researchers found 5 patterns of inflectional morpheme with 26 words. The most dominant pattern of inflectional morpheme was singular changing to the plural. Secondly, for derivational morpheme, it identified two types  of classes including class-changing and class-mantaining. There were 3 patterns with 10 words in class-changing and 1 pattern with 1 word in class-mantaining. The study also showed that the common pattern of derivational morpheme was class-changing pattern (verb to noun). Thirdly, there were 7 patterns with 15 clauses that were used in political news. Abstract

This study attempts to answer the question of to what extend extensive reading (ER) could enhance the English of Foreign language (EFL) learners' academic writing. This quasi-experimental study compared two English classes in terms of academic writing improvement after six weeks. This sample of the study was 64 students in a private university in the academic years of 2020-2021. In a traditional English class, the students primarily focused on grammar instruction and writing practice. On the other hand, the students in an ER class engaged in an ER program in and out of class involving the reading-related writing practice. The pretest and posttest were administered to measure students’ writing improvement. The results indicate that students in ER group with more exposure to comprehensible input show statistically significant progress on their posttest, whereas students in a traditional class show a moderate increase.

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the types of pragmatic failures that can lead to incorrect understanding of meaning by the audience. Pragmatic failure in translation consists of two failures, namely: pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Pragmalinguistic failures in translation are analyzed using speech act theory proposed by Searle and deixis theory proposed by Levinson. Sociopragmatic failures in translation are analyzed using the principle of cooperation theory proposed by Grice and the principle of politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. One hundred seventy-six pragmatic failures are found in the subtitles of Moonlight movie, which is divided into one hundred thirty-six pragmalinguistic failures and forty sociopragmatic failures. Pragmalinguistic failures that occur are the failures to transfer speech acts and deixis of oral speech into subtitles. Sociopragmatic failures that occur are the failures to transfer principle of cooperation of oral speech into subtitles.
