Abstract

Learning management systems (LMS) Moodle presents a beneficial arrangement of features that support language learning in the electronic environment. The English lecturers' challenge is to obtain interaction and adaptability with their online classroom. The study is to find the effectiveness of teaching English in Moodle-based.  The semi-structured interviews and open-ended questioner were employed to recognize the complete information to the English lecturer's teaching experiences based on Moodle. This study determines that the effective teaching of English Moodle-based depends on both lecturer competences in pedagogy English and lecturer experience in the Moodle system. It covers a complete curriculum with high expectations, composes applicable model content, and constructs it more obtainable, provides specific and culturally applicable instruction, maintains practical approaches to explicit learning strategies, allows learnings to use the first language, prepares vocabulary in various contexts, and develops reading comprehension, and integrates communicative competence abilities. The language learning activities of the Moodle classroom are capable of fulfilling learning practice for complete progression participants with peculiar configuration, management, adjustments, and teaching approach. The English teaching course designer should organize and manage an expected course model of course-related activity, and it applied to the utilization of the syllabus or course information page. The essential aspect of interchangeable communication significantly reshapes language teaching pedagogy in the electronic ecosystem. The effective teaching of English Moodle-based can be achieved with teaching pedagogy's full capabilities and technicality in the Moodle system.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to define a linguistic feature based on Donald Trump’s interview with TIME since Trump is a politician who has the power to influence others, and it can be extremely essential to analyze how the hidden meaning in his utterance images him as a public figure. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method because the object of the study is a transcript containing utterance and conversation. Grice's (1975) theory is used in this study to define the flouting maxim that occurs  during the interview. The result of this study is that 11 utterances containing flouting maxim of quantity, 3 flouting the maxim of relation, 2 flouting the maxim of manner, and no flouting maxim of quality is found in this study. After analyzing the finding, the most dominant found types is flouting maxim of quantity which means that Trump frequently gives more information than required to express his interest and to show his power as a president and his nationalism as representative of American.

Abstract

Several problems of speaking in SMAN 6 Medan attracted researchers to conduct the research as an effort to help the students in language learning. Researchers attempted to see the effectiveness of Pictionary game toward English speaking skill. This Pictionary game is a simple game and applicable for all levels of students. The main function of this game is building of creative thinking, increasing of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, developing student’s bravery in expression of the ideas and creating of responsibility and cooperative towards the students. Because of this advantage, many researchers conducted this game on language learning such as the effect of Pictionary game on vocabulary mastery and researchers decided to see whether Pictionary game is effective for student speaking skill. This study is conducted by using an experimental design. In collecting of the data, researcher took pre-test and post-test from experimental and control class and examined them to see whether Pictionary game is effective or not. After analyzing of the data using of three tests, researchers found that the students’ score in experimental group was higher than control group in post-test. The calculation showed tobserved was 2.07. The degree of the freedom was 70 (df= n1 + n2 – 2) that means (df= 36 + 36 – 2) at the significance level 0.05, thus the critical score was 1.97. It can be concluded ttable was 1.97. then, the calculation of students’ scores shown that tobserved > ttable that means (Ha) was accepted, and (H0) was rejected. It means there is significance effect of the students’ speaking skill after treated by Pictionary game.

Abstract

Recent efforts have addressed the new challenges related to conceptualizing, understanding and improving reading competency. Several literacy researchers have perceived reading as a developmental skill that is not situated exclusively within student’s cognition, or within family processes, or within classroom or school processes. Rather, reading development has been viewed as a result of the dynamic interaction among reader, family, classroom, and school system (Jaeger, 2017). Following on from this, systems theory approach and more specifically the ecological model allows for the examination of reading skill development from a holistic perspective. It provides an inclusive frame for describing and explaining how the educational opportunities are distributed at the micro, meso, exo, and macro systems and how these systems interact to explain students’ reading differences amon. It also delineates how developing readers’ individual characteristics transact with both proximal and distal processes to craft their reading ecologies. Future policy, practice and research are recommended to be based on the ecological model premises to have a comprehensive view of reading development.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the linguistic politeness of Indonesia's YouTube influencers. The findings show the type of YouTube content typology that has been found in this data according to Mediakix (2019) which gets a percentage of 40% is the type of interview content. This type of content is dominated by male Youtuber Meanwhile, according to Dynel (2015) theory, the category that gets the highest percentage in the category of insults with 43% of the total data. Based on a review of several studies, it was found that there are similarities and differences between one study and another. After analyzing the similarities and differences in previous studies, a novelty was found, namely in this study discussing the politeness patterns of YouTube influencers related to gender. Besides, this study analyzed 41 video sources which were used as research material. It can be seen that Indonesian Youtubers do not use polite language in order to trigger humour in its content. Interestingly, all humours made by these Youtubers contains politeness maxim deviation.

Abstract

One of the key aspects of successful in availability of tourism promotional text (TPT) that enables tourists to understand fully tourism destinations in area. Because each region has a different culture, tourism promotional text (TPT) is very much needed for the convenience of tourists who visit Indonesia. The Government already provides it with 2 languages, Indonesian and English. But most of TPT in Indonesia are Indonesian to English translations. There must be an assurance whether tourists can comprehend cultural aspects that usually become untranslatable items. Mostly untranslatable aspects such as traditional food, traditional ceremonies, traditional objects and place names are not translated or use the original sentence. This problem really needs attention because it really affects the tourists who read TPT. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the translation quality of cultural words in translated TPT of Central Java. This paper also explains how to use translation for cultural words in TPT correctly, so the text can be useful for the tourist. In order to achieve this aim, the authors used descriptive qualitative research along with the utilization of Katan and Nababan techniques of data collection and analysis. The findings show that most cultural words in TPT used environment type based on Katan’s theory (2009). For the accuracy, it’s shows that most of them are less accurate based on Nababan’s theory (2012).

Abstract

The online learning should be limited by principles and apply proper strategies. One of them is Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy. Applying this strategy must be guided by proper instructions and procedures. In reading skill teaching and learning, this strategy is considered suitable to make students learn independently without letting them lost in the processes. This study aims to; 1) develop tasks instructions on reading comprehension skill to help students learn independently during outbreak era, 2) get students’ perspectives on how SRL works on them. The method is research and development cycle. The students’ perspectives are measured using Likert scale. The results showed that there need to be specific and clear instructions stating time, purposes of the tasks, giving students log to monitor their learning process, encouraging them to get help from lecturers or peers, and encouraging themselves to evaluate the process to find proper strategy for them.

Abstract

Ideology is sometimes hidden away, especially in language, since language is the closest aspect of human, for it is used every day. One of the examples is covert ideology within the short story. This is why critical discourse analysis is needed to uncover this kind of thing. The short story scrutinized in this research is Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery. In order not to merely reveal an assumption, this research combines the critical discourse analysis theory by Fairclough, specifically termed Dialectical-Relational approach, as the philosophical theory with Appraisal study as the linguistic theory. All of the sentences and clauses in the story are the data of the research. The data, then, are close read for more accurate analysis. It is observed that the ideologies concealed by the text are social domination and marginalization through tradition. However, those social wrongs are hard to abolish, since they are even desired by the society; the tradition is believed to bring prosperity to the village regardless of wicked impact to the individual it brings, related to metanarratives, doxa, and symbolic violence, and fidelity towards the actor of domination. Therefore, there should be law to govern the habit harmful for others, so that all of the society rights can be protected.

Abstract

In technology-enhanced language learning, student engagement and roles of learners are being popular to be exposed to a better understanding of their progress on their performance of learning, and possible pitfalls in the online language classes during the study-from-home program in the times of COVID-19. This article attempts to explore the students’ perceptions of their engagement in the online learning process. It also investigates the prominent learners’ roles in the online learning environment and the possible factors affecting their engagement or participation in the online learning process. An exploratory research design was applied to this study. The subjects were a hundred and sixty-five undergraduate students from the English Literature Department and the English Education Department. The data collected were from a questionnaire that was distributed using Google Form link via WhatsApp Group, an online interview through the ZOOM meeting, and online observation through learning management systems (LMS) Moodle used by the students. Results show that most students conveyed positive responses toward their online engagement. There were also three most prominent learners’ roles identified. These roles covered active learning, problem solvers, and knowledge seeker. Besides, most students expressed that the number of compulsory task submissions, content courses, unstable internet connection, and limited internet data become the learning factors that might demotivate them to accomplish the online activities and complete the online language course. Thus, course creators or teachers should reconsider using appropriate and effective online learning activities and online learning objects to enhance the students’ active engagement in the online course.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to analyze the webtoon with interpersonal functions in the term of mood and residue in Webtoon Comic that can be found by the writers, and the most dominant Mood type in a webtoon entitled "True Beauty" written by Lee Si-eun which the genre is drama. In this analysis applied Martin, Matthiessen & Painter Theory, 1997 that divided Mood Types are Declarative, Interrogative, and Imperative and Geoff Thompson Theory to analyze the Mood and Residue. In this research, the researcher used the documentation and analysis method. The writers used the documentation method to get the data and then do the analysis. Analysis of data that has been done from 49 Mood was found there are 33 Mood are Declarative, 10 Mood of Interrogative, and 6 Mood are Imperative. From the result of the data, it can be concluded that the most dominant Mood Type in the Webtoon Comic entitled "True Beauty" which was written by Lee Si-eun which the genre is drama is Declarative with 33 Mood in total 49 Mood.
