Abstract

The intercept is a fundamental component in regression modeling that often receives limited attention in data analysis practice. This article presents a comprehensive literature review on the role of the intercept in enhancing the predictive accuracy of regression models. Through an examination of reputable national and international journals, the study identifies that the intercept significantly contributes to (1) the interpretation of model constants, (2) improvement of prediction accuracy, and (3) the validity of parameter estimation. The review reveals that ignoring or omitting the intercept without a strong statistical justification may lead to estimation bias and reduced predictive quality of the model. The practical implications of this study guide researchers in deciding whether to include or exclude the intercept in regression models, particularly in social, economic, and educational research.

Abstract

Creative thinking, critical thinking, and self-esteem are essential competencies in 21st-century mathematics education; however, their development remains suboptimal. This study aimed to develop a website-based trigonometry learning tool integrating the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and to evaluate its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. A Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model was employed with 35 tenth-grade students at MAN Batu Bara. The instruments included expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, learning implementation observation sheets, creative thinking and critical thinking tests, and a self-esteem questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate validity and practicality, while effectiveness was examined using a one-sample t-test against predetermined performance benchmarks. The results showed that the developed learning tool was highly valid based on expert evaluations and highly practical based on teacher responses, student responses, and learning implementation observations. Students' post-implementation mean scores significantly exceeded the benchmark values (p < 0.05). Moreover, 83% of the students achieved mastery in creative thinking, 71% in critical thinking, and 74% demonstrated very high self-esteem. These findings indicate that the developed learning tool satisfies the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness as an instructional product for trigonometry learning.

Abstract

This study analyzes the enhancement of students' mathematical reasoning abilities in a Basic Mathematics course through the implementation of context-based learning utilizing biological contexts. A pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The research was conducted during the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year within the Tadris Biology Study Program at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, involving a purposive sample of 94 students. Data were collected using both test and non-test instruments. The content validity of the four-item essay test was quantitatively verified using Aiken’s V index, indicating high validity, while instrument reliability was confirmed via Cronbach's Alpha (α = 0.82). Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, Normalized Gain (N-gain) scores, and Cohen’s d effect size to evaluate the magnitude of improvement. The results demonstrated a statistically significant enhancement in students' mathematical reasoning across all indicators. The mean scores (on a scale of 1–4) for constructing justification increased from 2.6 to 3.3, drawing conclusions from 2.5 to 3.2, and mathematical manipulation from 2.8 to 3.4. Conversely, the capacity to verify argument validity showed a limited gain, rising from 2.4 to 2.7. The effect size analysis revealed a robust effect, confirming that biology-contextualized mathematics learning substantially develops procedural and constructive reasoning, whereas evaluative reasoning requires more targeted pedagogical interventions

Abstract

Problem-solving skills play an essential role in learning mathematics. Having good problem-solving skills will help students to learn mathematics more effectively. These skills depend not only on cognitive abilities but are also significantly influenced by affective factors such as emotional intelligence and adversity quotient. This study aims to systematically investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and adversity quotient concerning students' mathematical problem-solving. This research method is a literature review that collects research from the last ten years to be compiled, analyzed, and concluded, which involves reviewing various references and relevant research findings to obtain a theoretical basis for this research. The results of the study show that emotional intelligence and adversity quotient have a direct impact on students' mathematical problem-solving skills. Emotional intelligence strongly influenced students' ability to deal with complex mathematical challenges, while the adversity quotient contributed to persistence and resilience in problem-solving. This study found that students with higher emotional intelligence and adversity quotient tended to use more effective strategies in solving mathematical problems. The results can be used as a phenomenon and basis for improving mathematical problem-solving skills that consider students' emotional intelligence and adversity quotient.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a learning design for negative exponent material using the context of “grid images” through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach at a public high school in Palembang. The background of this study stems from students' difficulties in learning and understanding the concept of negative exponents, which is abstract and not closely related to its visual form. Through the PMRI approach, mathematics learning becomes more meaningful and profound because students learn mathematics from contexts that are close to their lives. The research method used is design research, which includes three main stages, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The research subjects were tenth-grade students at a public high school in Palembang. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and student work, then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively to evaluate the learning process and outcomes. The results showed that the use of visual forms in the form of “grid images” and the PMRI approach could help students understand the meaning of negative exponents and find the formal form of negative exponents. In addition, the PMRI approach created a more interactive learning atmosphere between students and with teachers and helped students understand and find the formal form of negative exponents themselves. Thus, this learning design became an innovative alternative in teaching negative exponent material.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the indications of an increase in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities through the application of a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model based on a Deep Learning approach. The background of this study is based on the condition of mathematics learning at SMP Negeri 1 Bayah, which is still dominated by a one-way method and is not yet optimal in facilitating active student involvement in problem solving. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 students in class VII-F. The research instrument was a descriptive test of mathematical problem-solving skills compiled based on Polya's steps. Data analysis included normality tests, Paired Sample T-Test, and N-Gain calculations to see the level of improvement in student abilities. The results of the analysis showed that there was a difference in scores between the pretest and posttest, and the average N-Gain value was 0.4, which was in the moderate category. These findings indicate an increase in students' mathematical problem-solving skills after the implementation of Deep Learning-based PjBL learning. However, given the research design that did not involve a control group, the results of this study are understood as preliminary (tentative) evidence regarding the potential of the applied learning. This study implies that the integration of PjBL and the Deep Learning approach has the potential to create more meaningful and contextual mathematics learning, and can serve as a basis for further research with a stronger experimental design.

Abstract

This study is designed to describe students' mathematical problem-solving skills in the topic of ratios, classified based on high, medium, and low ability levels. A qualitative approach is applied through a case study method. The subjects consist of three eighth-grade students from MTs Asy Syuhada in one class, selected based on their mathematics test scores, each representing high, medium, and low ability categories. The research instruments include two contextual questions on ratios and an interview guide. The evaluation of mathematical problem-solving skills is based on Pólya's stages, namely understanding the problem, devising a solution plan, executing the plan, and reviewing the answer. The research findings reveal that high-ability students successfully grasp and execute problem-solving effectively, although they are not always consistent in writing down the plan or reviewing the answers. Medium-ability students can understand the problem but still face difficulties in the planning stage and accuracy in interpreting instructions. Meanwhile, low-ability students are unable to devise a plan or solve the problem due to their weak mastery of ratio concepts. This research confirms that mathematical problem-solving skills are influenced by conceptual understanding, precision, and the habit of applying problem-solving steps systematically.
