Abstract

This paper presents a new model of electric traction drive for electric vehicle. The sliding mode speed controller applied in the Indirect Rotor Field Oriented Control is used to control the induction motor fed by the five levels Neutral Point Clamped inverter (NPC). The simulation results showed the high performances dynamics and high robustness of the proposed model, that are reflected by faster startup and good speed tracking performances in terms of response time, oscillations and disturbance rejection. Also, a comparative study between different inverter topologies: two levels inverter, three levels NPC inverter and five levels NPC inverter has been carried out. From the spectral analysis, the five-levels NPC inverter fed drive provides better dynamics of voltage and current with reduced total harmonic distortion (THD).

Abstract

Many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, nowadays, require real-time communication, which demands cautious design consideration to resolve inherent conflicts between energy efficiency and the need to meet Quality of Services (QoS), such as end-to-end delay communications. Numerous innovative solutions are proposed such as Real-time Power-Aware Routing (RPAR) protocol, which dynamically adapts transmission power to meet specified communication delays at low energy cost. Hence, to enable real-time communication with RPAR protocol, an adaptive Power Management Circuit (PMC) using hybrid energy harvester to support WSN real-time communication is proposed. In this paper, a high-level architecture of the proposed PMC is discussed, which consists of Thermal Energy Generator (TEG), and Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (PEG) as energy providers, with low-power Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) feature enabled. Preliminary simulations which analyze and characterize TEG and PEG system are conducted separately to determine the optimal design parameters to support the conventional WSN QoS requirement. Next, both systems will be integrated into a single PMC implementation prior to fabrication and lab characterization.

Abstract

Bidirectional high gain DC-DC buck boost converter is a virtual interface among PV source and inverter fed motor drive. In this article, a PV panel integrating a non-isolated bidirectional DC/DC converter that has high voltage gain voltage and a 3 phase three level DC/AC inverter is projected. It highlights the comparison between proportional integral controller (PIC), fractional order proportional integral derivative Controller (FOPIDC) and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) based Bidirectional DC/DC Power Converter System (BDDPCS). The design, model and simulation using SIMULINK of open loop BDDPCS and closed loop PIC, FOPIDC and FLC based BDDPCS are done and the results are discussed. The findings indicate higher performance for FLC based control of BDDPCS. The proposed BDDPCS has merits such as bidirectional power transferability, lesser hardware count with enhanced dynamic response. The hardware of BDDPCS is tested and the experiment result is compared in association with simulation results.

Abstract

This paper analyses a 3-phase interleaved DC-DC boost converter for the conversion of low input voltage with high input current to higher DC output voltage. The operation of the 3-phase interleaved DC-DC boost converter with multi-parallel of boost converters is controlled by interleaved of switching signals with 120 degrees phase-shifted. Therefore, with this circuit configuraion, high input current is evenly shared among the parallel units and consequently the current stress is reduced on the circuit and semiconductor devices and contributes reduction of overall losses. The simulation and hardware results show that the current stress and the semiconductor conduction losses were reduced approximately 33% and 32%, respectively in the 3-phase interleaved DC-DC boost converter compared to the conventional DC-DC boost converters. Furthermore, the use of interleaving technique with continuous conduction mode on DC-DC boost converters is reducing input current and output voltage ripples to increase reliability and efficiency of boost converters.

Abstract

Renewable Energy (RE) penetration is a new phenomenon in power systems. In the advent of high penetration of RE in the systems, several issues have to be addressed especially when it involves the stability and flexibility of the power systems. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has gained popularity due to its capability to store energy and to serve multiple purposes in solving various power system concerns. Additionally, several BESS can be combined to operate as Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This study will involve the design and implementation of BESS for five potential customer sites for the demonstration project and to be possibly integrated into one VPP system. Abstract

Multilevel inverters are gaining special interest among researchers and in the industry due to their widespread applications and numerous merits. Obtaining high quality, more reliable output while using a reduced number of electronic components is the main purpose of most of the research conducted in this area of study. The purpose of this study is to apply the nearest level control (NLC) method to a 13-level transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) inverter with unequal DC voltage supplies. The NLC method operates at the fundamental frequency, thus reducing switching losses, and can reduce the harmonic content significantly. The adopted multilevel inverter consists of two TCHB cells supplied with two asymmetrical DC input sources with a voltage ratio of 1:2. This structure reduces the number of electronic components, and the asymmetry in the DC input voltages results in a higher number of levels. The adopted topology and its proposed control method were simulated in Matlab/Simulink, and the simulation results were verified through experiments using an Altera field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board. The results showed that the topology and its control method are efficient in obtaining a high-quality output with an improved total harmonic distortion (THD).

Abstract

For Induction motor is a system that works at their speed, nevertheless there are applications at which the speed operations are needed. The control of range of speed of induction motor techniques is available. The robust control is used with induction motor and the performance of the system with the controller will be improved. The mathematical model to the controller, which were coded in MATLAB. The modeling and controller will be shown by the conditions of robustness of  be less than one.

Abstract

The paper presents the description for diagnostic methods of induction motor's stator windings fault. The presented methods use Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) technique for detection of Winding Faults in Induction Motor . This method is previously reliable method for faults diagnosis and detection in many parts of transformers including transformer windings. In this paper, this method was used for motor windings faults detection. This paper presents the FRA response interpretation on internal short circuit (SC) fault at stator winding on three cases studies of different three-phase induction motors (TPIM), were analysed according to two status: healthy induction motor at normal winding status and same motor with windings shorted of main windings. A conclusion of this paper provides the interpretation of and validation the FRA response due to internal SC fault case by using NCEPRI algorithm, which is considered as one of certified statistical indicators. The proposed method in this paper had a useful result for detect and diagnosis of stator windings faults of TPIM. The applications of developed method can be used to detece the other machines types faults.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel converter configuration with fewer for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive. The proposed novel converter insists for less number of switches compared to conventional asymmetrical type of converter configuration for switched reluctance motor. Switch count reduction in converter reduces the losses, volume of heat sink, and number of gate drive circuits and thereby the performance of the system. Closed loop speed control of switched reluctance motor fed from proposed novel converter topology was presented in this paper. Performance of closed loop operation is compared to open loop system. Further the proposed converter for SRMT is evaluated with loaded condition and comparative analysis of no-load and loaded SRM is presented. The model presented is developed and the results are analyzed using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Closed loop performance of proposed novel converter fed switched reluctance motor drive is verified at fixed speed and variable speed conditions.

Abstract

An induction motor (IM) has been the workhorse of the industry for decades. It is due to its robustness, simple construction, requiring less maintenance and cheap. One of the most widely adopted IM drive control schemes for industrial applications is the open-loop constant V/Hz. In this paper, the important elements of an open-loop constant V/Hz drives are presented. These include the fundamental concept of a constant V/Hz scheme, the voltage source inverter (VSI) and its modulation schemes. Techniques that are commonly used to solve problems of low-speed operation and rotor speed regulation are briefly described. Simulations using MATLAB/Simulink package are used to help in illustrating these fundamental concepts. Finally, simple laboratory-scale experiments are conducted to implement the constant V/Hz control scheme on a ¼ hp induction motor. The constant V/Hz control is implemented using the DS1104 controller board with the C codes automatically generated from the Simulink model. A closer look at the current waveform when fref=25 Hz and 12 Hz and its respective Fourier analysis are presented. The results show that the high-frequency harmonic contents around the switching frequency can be observed for both cases, and the voltage waveform presents more spike noises in constrast to  current waveform.
