Abstract

The Kebomas District in Gresik Regency faces challenges in optimizing sanitation services through communal Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP). This study aims to evaluate the technical effectiveness of domestic wastewater treatment at three locations—KPP Karangmas, KPP Sejahtera, and KPP Sentosa—to improve regional sanitation performance. A quantitative descriptive method was employed by analyzing influent and effluent quality, as well as operational parameters such as Organic Loading Rate (OLR) and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT). The results show that effluent concentrations for critical parameters exceeded the quality standards set by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 11 of 2025, with ammonia levels ranging from 14.2–15.1 mg/L and fecal coliform reaching 11,000 MPN/100 mL. Removal efficiencies for BOD and COD varied significantly; KPP Karangmas showed the best performance with a COD removal efficiency of 72%, while KPP Sejahtera and KPP Sentosa only achieved 40-55, far below the 80% design target. This low efficiency is attributed to extreme underloading conditions, where the actual organic load was only 11-34% of the design capacity. In conclusion, WWTP performance is not yet optimal due to inappropriate influent organic loading and the lack of disinfection units and adequate aeration systems. Technical recommendations include modifying the system into an intermittent anaerobic-aerobic process to effectively reduce ammonia levels.

Abstract

The Tamangapa Landfill in Makassar receives more than 800 tons of solid waste per day under an open dumping system. This condition leads to leachate accumulation exceeding the available infrastructure capacity. Functional failures of the Leachate Treatment Plant (LTP) result in suboptimal treatment, causing leachate to be discharged directly into the environment. Therefore, immediate technical intervention is required. This study applies the Thornthwaite–Mather water balance method to estimate leachate discharge. In addition, laboratory analyses are conducted to evaluate influent and effluent quality based on regulatory standards. The results indicate that the LTP performance is highly ineffective, with an organic load removal efficiency of only 42%. Effluent concentrations of BOD (264.16 mg/L), COD (660.21 mg/L), and Total Nitrogen (161.65 mg/L) exceed the standards specified in PermenLHK No. 59/2016. The system failure is primarily attributed to structural and operational constraints, particularly excessive sludge accumulation and short-circuiting within the treatment ponds. Therefore, technical rehabilitation is required, including sludge dredging, installation of hydraulic baffles, and integration of advanced chemical treatment using the Fenton method to ensure compliance with effluent quality standards prior to environmental discharge.

Abstract

Copper contamination from anthropogenic activities negatively impacts water quality and agriculture, with documented cases showing reduced crop yields and economic losses. This study conducted a preliminary screening to evaluate the survivability and toxicity signs of V. zizanioides under copper exposure as an initial assessment of its potential for phytoremediation. A range finding test was performed using five Cu concentration (100, 250, 500, 750, 1000 mg/L) and control. Following 40 days-propagation period, plants were exposed to Cu  for 7-14 days. Daily observations included plant condition and height, while pH and temperature were periodically monitored to ensure that plant mortality resulted from toxicity rather than environmental factors. The results indicated that V. zizanioides tolerated copper concentration up to 100 mg/L. However at concentrations above 100 mg/L, typical toxicity symptoms, such as chlorosis and necrosis, appeared as early as the second day. Complete plant mortality was observed at the highest concentration, 1000 mg/L. Although this study did not assess metal removal performance, these findings highlight the resilience of V. zizanioides under copper stress and provide an important basis for future research to determine its suitability for phytoremediation or constructed wetlands.
