Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of mastery of Grammar in students. This is because the practice in the learning process is still not varied, one example of an exercise that can be used is Kahoot. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of Kahoot on the teaching of Grammar students in the second year of the SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. This research uses a quantitative with quasi-experimental methods “pre-test and post-test control group design”. The population in this study were second year students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP who were registered in the June-December period of the 2019/2020 school year. The research sample was 20 students of class XI IBB as the experimental class and 22 students of class XI MIPA 1 as the control class. The data of this study are the scores of the final test results of Grammar teaching without and using Kahoot second year students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The test scores were compared using the t-test formula to determine the effectiveness of using Kahoot in Grammar teaching. Based on the results of the t-test, it was concluded that learning using Kahoot was effective in the teaching of Grammar in the second year students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP because tcount> ttable (4.75> 1.68) at a significant level of 0.05. So, it was concluded that the teaching of Grammar in the second year students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP by using Kahoot was better than without using Kahoot.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper discusses how to apply Google Docs for collaborative writing in teaching writing to English Department students. Google docs as a feature Google served for all its users can be used collaborative writing in which all students in one class can contribute to make a good writing. Collaborative writing means that students write a text and sharing ideas with others students and it will be corrected and supported by others students By using Google Docs for collaborative writing, students can interact and write together with other students in developing their writing. They can give comments to other students and edit other students’ drafts at the same time. It will help them to get more ideas in writing as they combine their ideas with others ideas. Keywords: Writing, Collaborative Writing, Descriptive Text, Google Docs

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) melihat kemampuan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris dalam menggunakan discourse markers dalam menulis discussion text, (2) mengetahui discourse markers yang sering digunakan. Sample penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa bahasa Inggris UNP tingkat III tahun akademik 2010 yang berjumlah 21 orang. Instrumen yang dipakai adalah tes tulis. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menyuruh siswa menulis discussion text berdasarkan topik yang telah disediakan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan bahwa mahasiswa memiliki kemampuan yang menengah dalam menggunakan discourse markers. Selain itu, discourse markers yang sering digunakan mahasiswa adalah contrastive markers (39,83%), elaborative markers (36,6%), selanjutnya, inferential markers (20.32%), dan reasonable markers (3.25%). Abstract

The current technological and communication development affects almost all the aspects of human life, and one of them is in education. In English teaching, technological development has a positive impact; it is about teaching English through E-learning. In E-learning, there are a lot of media that can be used by the teacher and the students to support learning English. One of them is through online learning (teaching methods via internet). In online learning, using website can help the teacher and the students to teach and learn English through E-learning. School.duolingo.com is one of the websites that can be used by the teacher and the students as a media to teach and learn English. This website has interesting features that can increase students’ interest and motivate them to learn English. The teacher can also check the progress of the students in school.duolingo.com. Through this paper the author hopes that all teachers to be more creative in using media in order to increase interest and motivation of the students to learn English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the implementation or the use of Syntax Surgery strategy to overcome the difficulty of the junior high school students in reading and understanding the structure of English sentences. Through this paper, it is expected to give advantages for the teachers in teaching reading. In addition, this strategy is expected to be an alternative way to increase junior high school students’ ability. This strategy is effective to overcome the students’ reading problem because the students’ can visually see the connection between the clauses in complex sentence. This process will make students more understand and remember the rules in English sentences. Furthermore, other advantage is students will be more confident to use their English. AbstrakTujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan mengenai penerapan strategi Syntax Surgery (bedah kalimat) guna mengatasi kesulitan siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) dalam membaca dan memahami susunan kalimat dalam Bahasa Inggris. Melalui makalah ini diharapkan akan memberikan hal yang bermanfaat bagi para guru dalam mengajarkan siswa untuk membaca. Selanjutnya, dengan menggunakan strategy  Syntax Surgery (bedah kalimat) ini diharapkan mampu menjadi alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Syntax Surgery ini ampuh dalam menanggulangi masalah membaca pada anak karena siswa dapat menyaksikan secara visual hubungan antara klausa dalam kalimat kompleks. Proses ini akan membuat siswa lebih memahami dan mengingat aturan kalimat bahasa inggris. Selain itu, manfaat lain ialah siswa bisa lebih percaya diri dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Based on the writer’s experience, many students have not interested in reading text, they do not have motivation in reading and the students become passive in the class. Considering such problem, an appropriate strategy in teaching is needed to help students to improve their ability in reading. This paper aims at explaining how to implement think-pair-share strategy in reading narrative text. Think-pair-share strategy conducted students to do three phases. The students have “wait time” go review their background knowledge about the topic. Then the teacher divides the students to work in pair after answer the question individually. After that, each of students shares their answer and ideas in pair. Finally, the students present their discussion in front of the class individually. The objective of this paper is to help the students visualize their knowledge in the form of group work and improve student motivation and ability in reading narrative text.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in comprehending recount texts viewed from the generic structure, social function and lexico grammatical features. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is 31 students selected using cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this research were reading test and interview. In reading test, the test consisted of 30 items multiple choice with five recount text related to generic structure, social functions and lexico grammatical features. The research data were in the form of interpretations of student test results and interviews with students. Based on data analysis, it was found that the students’ difficulties in comprehending recount texts were average. It was proved by 67,74%, students had difficulties in comprehending generic structure, 64,52% students had difficulties in comprehending social function, and 74,19% students had difficulties in comprehending lexico grammatical features. Furthermore, it was caused by lack of knowledge, limited vocabulary, less concentration and poor reading habit.

Abstract

Abstrak Banyak siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) yang kesulitan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini disebabkan karena Bahasa Inggris bukanlah bahasa ibu mereka, maka Bahasa Inggris dianggap asing dan sulit untuk dilafalkan. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan aktifitas-aktifitas yang dapat memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara Bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas. Dalam hal ini, penulis menyarankan penggunaan“Getting to Know” game untuk membantu siswa dalam belajar speaking agar dapat berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan baik. Melalui game ini, siswa diharapkan dapat berbicara Bahasa Inggris secara spontan dan natural dalam bentuk interaksi tanya jawab berdasarkan topik yang diberikan oleh guru. Siswa dapat berbicara sesuai kemampuan mereka dalam bertanya dan menjawab, tidak ada paksaan. Guru akan memperhatikan siswa selama bermain dan kemudian memberikan kritik dan memperbaiki kesalahan siswa setelah semua siswa tampil. Keuntungan dari permainan ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa, dan terutama untuk melatih siswa agar aktif dalam speaking English di dalam kelas. Kata kunci: speaking, “getting to know” game.

Abstract

Speaking in a foreign language is one of difficult activities for students. It is caused by some factors, which are the lack of role models, vocabulary mastery, and inability of brainstorming ideas. an appropriate technique is needed to solve these problems. One of the techniques is “self-talk” technique. This technique helps both teacher and students to built the interaction. In this technique, teacher explains what they are doing. The teacher will provide list of vocabularies to describe what they are doing. This technique is expected to help students in speaking, because speaking starts after listening. In addition, the teacher gives direct examples of the vocabulary to help students develop the ideas they are going to say. The difficulties that are faced by the students is expected to be solved through this technique.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Artikel ini membahas penggunaan strategi Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) pada pengajaran berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris. Dalam artikel ini dibahas bagaimana pengaplikasian strategi Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) dalam proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas bahasa inggris, yang dapat membantu siswa untuk meningkatkan dan memberikan kemampuan dalam berbicara. Strategi ini melatih siswa terutama siswa SMP untuk berfikir kritis dan bekerjasama untuk saling berinteraksi dengan lawan bicaranya dengan lebih percaya diri tanpa merasa takut untuk berbicara. Tidak hanya itu, melalui strategi pembelajaran ini, siswa juga lebih terbiasa menyampaikan pendapat atau ide yang berkaitan dengan topik yang akan dibicarakan sehingga siswa akan merasa lebih mudah dalam menyampaikan ide dan pendapatnya. Strategi ini terdiri dari dua lingkaran yaitu: Inside (di dalam) dan Outside (di luar)   Kata kunci: Inside-Outside Circle Strategy, Teaching Speaking, Self Confidence, Junior High School Students
