Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara membangun dan mengembangkan ide siswa dengan menggunakan teks recount dalam pengajaran speaking. Kemampuan siswa  SMP dalam menyampaikan isi  teks  masih sangat kurang disebabkan karena kurang nya ide atau  gagasan  dalam  berbicara.  Recount  teks  adalah  suatu  jenis  teks  yang menceritakan kejadian masa lalu atau pengalaman seseorang. Langkah-langkah  dalam  pengajaran  recount teks  dengan  balon dan music  yaitu  persiapan,  sewaktu-pengajaran  dan sesudah-pengajaran. Pada  persiapan, guru mempersiapkan materi recount teks, media ajar  yang akan digunakan, balon dan music.  Pada  sewaktu-pengajaran,  guru memodelkan  sebuah  teks,  dan  menjelaskan  kepada  murid  cara menyampaikan isi  teks tersebut,  menyuruh  murid  untuk  menceritakan  teks tersebut di depan kelas. Pada  sesudah-pengajaran, guru memberikan umpan balik kepada murid dan memberikan nilai dan penghargaan kepada murid yang mampu berbicara di depan kelas dalam menceritakan isi recount text tersebut.   Kata kunci: recount, crisscross game.

Abstract

This study is about the relationship of students’ metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension: the cast of sixth semester students of English Department Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Since it is still doubted whether or not there is a significant correlation between the students’ Metacognitive Reading Strategies Awareness and Reading Comprehension, the writer conducted a research to obtain the answers to those questions. Prior to finding out relationship, the study tried to ascertain the level awareness and types strategies that respondents use when they read English academic texts, and their reading performance. Using SORS questionnaire and Test TOEFL with students’ k1-15 English department (UNP), the study found out that the awareness of respondents on using metacognitive reading strategies is on medium level. From three categories of metacognitive reading strategies, the Problem-Solving Strategies (PROB) is the most frequently used by respondents. On the level reading comprehension, the respondents got below average or low level. For correlation, the study used Pearson product correlation moment. The study reveals that there is no correlation between metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension.

Abstract

AbstractGrouping words into phrases is one of the problems faced by English students in using the language. Noun phrase as a basic constituent of a sentence is seen very problematic. The paper tries to explore how well second year students of English Department analyse noun phrases and their problems in doing it. There were 28 chosen taken students through proportionate stratified sampling as the sample. The text designed consisting of 20 noun phrases were distributed to the sample to be analysed. Each noun phrase was generally analysed into three aspects, namely, identifying type/component, its function within a sentence, and role of each element. The analysis was by scoring and putting them into percentage. Then, they were categorized into excellent, good, average, poor, and very poor. The result shows that about 40% of sample failed to analyse noun phrase correctly. Their way of analysing noun phrase was in average level on identifying type/component (58.29%), very poor level on its function within a sentence (45.5%), and good level on the role of each element of noun phrase (67.53%). The problem was mainly students’ lack competence in identifying the part of speech and its function for each point.Key Word: students’ ability, analysis, noun phrase, text

Abstract

AbstrakMakalah ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan cara pengajaran writing narrative text dengan menggunakan probable passage strategy. Strategi probable passage merupakan cara yang komunikatif dalam pengajaran writing. Seorang guru membimbing siswa untuk memulai menulis teks naratif dengan memperkenalkan beberapa kosa kata inti yang terdiri dari kata kerja, kata sifat, tokoh, latar, masalah, penyelesaian masalah, dan akhir cerita. Guru menjelaskan setiap kata kunci yang diberikan, baik itu arti kata maupun penggunaannya dalam kalimat. Guru juga perlu mengelompokkan beberapa kata yang bisa digunakan dalam satu kalimat, seperti yang ada dalam teks naratif sebenarnya. Berdasarkan kata kunci tesebut, siswa mencoba menulis sebuah teks naratif berdasarkan apa yang mereka pahami dari kata kunci yang diberikan oleh guru. Dengan menggunakan strategi probable passage, siswa akan lebih mudah untuk menulis sebuah teks naratif.

Abstract

This research aims to see whether students who were taught by using Number Together technique had better reading comprehension than those who were taught by using technique used by English teachers in teaching reading which was called in this technique as conventional technique. The sample of this research was X IPA 3 as the experimental group which consists of 35 students and X IPA 5 as the control group which consists of 35 students. The data of this research was reading test (posttest) scores which were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that there was significantly difference on student’ reading comprehension of tenth year students who were taught by using Number Head Technique. The reasult showed that tcount was 8.73 and ttable was 2.00 in the level of significant 0.05 which means tcount was bigger than ttable. Finally, it could be concluded that the students who were taught by using Number Head Together technique had better reading comprehension thann those who were taught by using conventional technique.

Abstract

The purposes of this article are to (1) explain how to use www.learnenglishkidsbritishcouncil.org/en in teaching English Integratively to Elementary School students (2) explain about the advantages of this website in teaching English Integratively for Elementary School students. In pre-teaching, teacher build students’ intersest by playing a song and invite students to sing the song together. In whilst teaching, teacher invites students to play matching game of the story that they want to watch. After that, teacher invites students to watch the short story and do the worksheet. Next, teacher invites students to discuss the cronology of the story by playing picture series in groups. In post-teaching, teacher invites students to play flash cards of the story to make students more understand the lesson. Students will be happy in learning English by using the features of this website because they learn through songs, short stories and games. AbstrakTujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk (1) menjelaskan bagaimana cara menggunakan website www.learnenglishkidsbritishcouncil.org/en dalam mengajar bahasa inggris secara integratif kepada siswa SD (2) menjelaskan tentang manfaat website ini dalam pengajaran bahasa inggris secara integratif. Di awal pembelajaran (pre-teaching) guru membangun ketertarikan siswa dalam belajar dengan memutarkan sebuah lagu dan mengajak mereka bernyanyi bersama. Setelah itu, (whilst-teaching) guru mengajak siswa bermain matching game dari cerita pendek yang akan mereka tonton. Selanjutnya, guru mengajak siswa menonton cerita pendek dan mengerjakan worksheet tentang cerita tersebut. Setelah itu guru mengajak siswa mendiskusikan kronologi dari cerita dengan bermain picture series dalam kelompok. Di akhir pembelajaran, (post-teaching) guru mengajak siswa bermain flash cards dari cerita tersebut. Siswa akan senang belajar bahasa inggris melalui fitur fitur yang ada dalam website karena mereka belajar melalui lagu, cerita pendek, dan permainan.

Abstract

This is a descriptive qualitative and quantitative research which this research is aimed to investigate the percentage of mother tongue and second language by teachers in the classroom and their functions at the level of junior high school, especially in grade VII. Grade VII is chosen because of English is officially taught in Indonesia which means that English is very beginning level for junior high school student, especially in grade VII. This research is conducted in four junior high schools in Padang with teachers as the participants. These five teachers taught English in grade VII. Classroom observation and stimulated recall interview were used to look at the number of the language use by teachers, and the stimulated recall interview was used to clarify teachers` reasons of their language use. The result revealed that all the teachers use L1 and L2 in teaching English; they did code-switching in the form of translation. Another interesting finding is that all the teachers mentioned that they were not aware of their language use.Key words: code-switching, L1, and L2.

Abstract

This study analyzed type of themes in source text (ST) and target text (TT), also theme shifts in students’ translation product which are under Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004). The participants of this research were translation students of English education program of UNP that registered in academic year 2015. They were asked to translate newspaper article which published by The Jakarta Post from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, descriptive qualitative research is applied. Based on the research findings, the researcher found that: (i) simple un-marked theme (SUT) was the theme most frequently used in both the ST and the TT; (ii) Students mostly did the theme shifts in the same-level of clause.

Abstract

ABSTRAKArtikel ini membahas tentang penggunaan media Beef burger dalam pengajaran menulis bahasa Inggris. Beef Burger adalah sebuah media dimana pola penggunaanya merupakan komponen dari recount text. Media ini terdiri dari tiga tahap, yaitu: Top Bun (orientation), fillings (events), dan Bottom Bun (reorientation). Pengaplikasian media Beef Burger dalam proses pembelajaran di kelas bahasa Inggris, dapat membantu siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa terutama dalam menulis text recount. Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini adalah penelitian deskripstif yang menggambarkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan kalimat-kalimat dalam recipe text dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Adapun populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa S1 Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, tahun akademik 2014 di Universitas Negeri Padang dan subjek dipilih dengan menggunakan metode total sampling. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa menerjemahkan recipe text dan apa saja masalah yang mereka hadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan dan apa saja masalah yang dihadapi dalam menerjemahkan recipe text. Adapun instrument yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah translation test. Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan 0 (0%) dari mahasiswa mempunyai kemampuan menerjemah bagus, 40 (93,02%) berkemampuan kurang bagus, dan 3 (6,97%) mempunyai kemampuan tidak bagus. Dari data tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa Tata Boga, Jurusan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Keluarga, Fakultas Pariwisata dan Perhotelan, UNP mempunyai kemampuan kurang bagus dalam menerjemah. Oleh karena itu, mereka perlu banyak diajarkan cara menerjemah dengan baik agar mereka dapat menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat.
