Abstract

 Abstract English is the important language that has to be mastered. There are four skills in language learning; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is one of language skills which is very important to be mastered by students. However, students still find some difficulties in speaking, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and motivation. Therefore, teacher should select the appropriate media that can solve all the problems. Love Song is chosen by the writer as the appropriate media since it can solve all the problems faced by students. In using Love Song, the teacher plays a song and asks the students to play the missing lyrics game. After that, students find the meaning of the song. Then, teacher explains the material (simple present tense), and teacher asks students to find out the simple present tense in the lyrics of Everything I do (I do it for you). Next, students are given an individual task to memorize the song. After doing the individual task, the teacher asks students about the moral value of the song. The last, teacher gives homework to memorize another love song and conclude the lesson with the students. By using love song in English class, teaching and learning process will be fun and interesting. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to use Love song in teaching English for Senior High School students. Key Words: English, Speaking, Love Song, Senior High School Students

Abstract

AbstractReading is an important activity that cannot be separated from human’s activity. As a student, reading becomes a vital aspect for helping them toward the learning. However, there are many factors that steal students’ attention from reading. In this research, the researcher wanted to find out how students’ motivation in this recent situation. The purpose of this study was aimed to analyse the students’ reading motivation and defined the type of students’ motivation in reading subject at English Department of UNP. The study was descriptive study using quantitative approach. The data were collected through a ready-made questionnaire “Motivation Reading Questionnaire” by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). The subject of the study was 2016 English Education students from English Department of UNP. The samples of the study were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The result of this study showed that: (1) 2016 English Education Students have a good motivation in reading, because a half of the participant were in average level of reading motivation, followed by the high level of motivation, and there were only two students who have low motivation, (2) the students’ type of motivation were dominantly extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

AbstrakMakalah ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan salah satu strategi pengajaran vocabulary di Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) dengan menggunakan Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). Strategy ini dapat dingunakan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata siswa dan menumbuhkan motivasi internal siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Dalam strategy ini, siswa diberi kepercayaan untuk dapat menemukan arti dari kosakata sulit yang mereka anggap penting dan menarik untuk mereka ketahui berdasarkan topik yang telah diberikan guru pada akhir pelajaran sebelumnya. Pada pertemuan berikutnya, satu persatu siswa diminta untuk menulis kata di papan tulis dan mempresentasikan kata tersebut di depan kelas. Dalam presentasi, siswa menjelaskan dimana mereka menemukan kata tersebut, apa arti kata tersebut menurut pendapat mereka dan mengapa dia dan siswa lain harus tahu arti kata tersebut. Setelah presentasi, guru dan seluruh siswa memberikan informasi tambahan mengenai kata-kata yang telah dipresentasikan. Dalam diskusi ini, dilakukan penyisihan terhadap kata-kata yang muncul lebih dari satu kali dan kata-kata yang dianggap seluruh siswa sudah mengetahui artinya. Kata-kata yang terpilih pada akhirnya akan ditulis kembali ke dalam daftar kata pribadi mereka. Peran guru adalah memantau dan menilai hasil kerja siswa dan mendiskusikan kata-kata baru tersebut bersama-sama di dalam kelas. Penulis yakin bahwa strategi ini dapat bermanfaat bagi guru dalam peningkatan motivasi anak-anak dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, strategi ini juga dapat menumbuhkan ketertarikan siswa terhadap Bahasa Inggris dan hal ini dapat memberikan dampak positif dalam proses belajar mengajar.

Abstract

The increasing of global communication makes the demand to mastering English also increase, including Indonesia. In learning English, understanding vocabulary is considered as an essential thing because without vocabulary, people will not be able to express their ideas and comprehend what other people say, in other words, they are not able to communicate each other. In order to mastering English vocabulary, students from elementary grade are introduced to English vocabulary by using many kinds of interactive media that can help this purpose. One of the media to help students’ vocabulary mastery is called Interactive Word Walls which is used in elementary school. Interactive Word Walls is a vocabulary learning media where the words that have been learned are displayed on the wall. This paper will discuss the procedure in creating this media, the application method, and the use of it.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using e-learning Moodle for homework in improving reading ability of grade X students of SMAN 4 Padang. The study was an experimental research with the population grade X of SMAN 4 Padang in academic year 2012/2013. Sample is class X7 as the experimental group and class X10 as the control group. Post-test was given after treatment in the experimental class. The reading comprehension data of both groups were analyzed using t-test formula. T-test result of the study is 2,833, while the table-t is 1.999. Based on the result of the calculation, it can be concluded that the use of e-learning Moodle for homework is more effective in improving students' reading ability. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat keefektifan penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah terhadap kemampuan membaca siswa di kelas X SMAN 4 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen dengan populasi penelitian siswa kelas X SMAN 4 Padang tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Sampelnya yaitu kelas X7 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan X10 sebagai kelas kontrol. Pos-tes diberikan setelah perlakuan pada kelas eksperimen. Data berupa nilai tes pemahaman membaca oleh kedua kelompok sampel dianalisis menggunakan rumus uji-t. Hasil uji-t penelitian adalah 2,833 sedangkan tabel-t adalah 1,999. Berdasarkan hasil penghitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.   Key words: reading ability, homework, E-learning Moodle

Abstract

This research was about the comparison between students’ ability of grade X and grade XI in writing recount text with the topic of an unforgettable experience. This study aimed to compare the level of students’ grade X and grade XI ability in writing recount text seen from the generic structure of the text. The research design of this study was descriptive research. The population of this research was all of classes grade X and grade XI of SMAN 1 Lubuk Alung. The sample was taken by using random cluster sampling technique so that the sample obtained was 1 class from grade X and 1 class from grade XI. The instrument used in this study was a test recount text for 45 minutes in at least 100 words. The students’ writing was analyzed using recount text writing rubric related to the generic structure of the text. Based on this research, students’ ability of grade XI was higher than grade X by looking from the generic structure of recount text. The ability of students grade XI was in 3 (good) category while students grade X was in 2 (weak) category. Nevertheless, there were several parts of the text that students could not understand yet how to write them.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk membahas bagaimana pengajaran menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan media teka-teki silang. Teka-teki silang ini dapat digunakan sebagai media alternatif dalam mengajar menulis teks deskriptif untuk siswa di kelas II SMP. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran  menggunakan teka-teki silang dalam menulis teks deskriptif melalui dua tahapan  utama.  Pertama adalah tahap persiapan. Dalam tahap ini, guru mempersiapkan teka-teki tertentu yang akan digunakan dalam mengajar menulis teks deskriptif. Tahap kedua adalah  tahapan pengajaran. Tahap ini terdiri dari pre-teaching, whilst-teaching dan post-teaching. Dalam pre-teaching, guru melakukan kegiatan Brainstorming yang dapat mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa tentang teks deskriptif. Whilst teaching dibagi menjadi tiga bagian: (1) eksplorasi, (2) elaborasi dan (3) konfirmasi. Guru menggunakan teka-teki silang dan siswa akan memecahkan teka-teki silang pada bagian elaborasi. Dengan menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang tersedia pada teka-teki silang, para siswa secara otomatis akan mendapatkan kosa kata yang diperlukan dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Selain itu, siswa akan menulis teks deskriptif berdasarkan kosa kata pada teka-teki silang. Manfaat utama dari  penggunaan teka-teki silang dalam mengajar menulis teks deskriptif adalah untuk memperkaya kosakata serta untuk meningkatkan minat siswa dalam menulis. Oleh karena itu, teka-teki silang adalah media yang tepat dalam mengajar menulis teks deskriptif. Key Words: teaching writing, descriptive text, crossword puzzle, Junior High School students

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat tipe strategi belajar yang paling banyak digunakan oleh siswa. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa melalui strategi belajar yang mereka terapkan dalam belajar. Metode penelitian deskriptif digunakan dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan 50 siswa kelas 8 SMP Negeri 3 Padang Panjang sebagai sumber data penelitian. Angket digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk mengumpulkan informasi mengenai strategi belajar siswa. Data dari angket dianalisa untuk mengetahui strategi yang paling banyak digunakan siswa. Kemudian data tersebut dibandingkan dengan nilai siswa untuk melihat kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris melalui strategi yang digunakan. Hasil penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa memilih metacognitive strategi sebagai strategi yang mereka gunakan dalam belajar. Selain itu, dari analisa nilai siswa, sebagian besar siswa yang mendapatkan nilai tertinggi dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris menggunakan metacognitive strategi dalam belajar. Melalui metacognitive strategi, siswa dimudahkan untuk mengevaluasi kemampuan mereka sehingga mereka dapat mengetahui apa yang harus mereka tingkatkan dan bagaimana mereka meningkatkan belajar mereka.Key Words: learning strategies, learning strategies for speaking, learning achievement

Abstract

AbstractThis research was a descriptive quantitavie research about English students’ ability in using lexical collocations viewed intheirspeaking performances. The uses of lexical collocations has been concerned as the 2013 batch English students had been practicing English at classes they had taken and at schools they had taught their temporary students. Lexical collocations indicated natural English which knowledge of it is necessary to gain as they are going to teach their students in the future. 18 students who had done PLK activity were involved in speaking test and interviews. The lexical collocations found in students sentences were analyzed and the types were classified to see the correct uses or collocation problems. It was found that the students’ ability in using lexical collocations was poor. All types of lexical collocations were used with different proportions with Verb and adjective and Adjective and Noun as the most frequent types of lexical collocations used. The problems were frequently of Verb and Noun and Adjective and Noun types. The causes of the problems were the limited knowledge of lexical collocations, the ignorance of the use of lexical collocations, and the use of direct translation from L1 to L2. It is concluded the more lexical collocations used, the more possible problems to occur.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan cara membangun ide  siswa menggunakan gambar brosur wisata. Salah satu media pengajaran yang dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami deskriptif teks adalah “brosur wisata”. Langkah-langkah pengajaran deskriptif teks dengan gambar brosur wisata yaitu:   1. Persiapan, guru mempersiapkan materi deskriptif teks, media ajar yang akan digunakan, gambar brosur wisata dan rencana pengajaran. 2. Sebelum-pengajaran, guru mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan murid dengan memperlihat kan brosur wisata. 3. Sewaktu-pengajaran, guru memodelkan sebuah brosur wisata, dan menjelaskan cara mendeskripsikannya, menyuruh murid mendeskripsikan teks tersebut di depan kelas. 4. Sesudah-pengajaran, guru memberikan umpan balik, nilai dan penghargaan kepada murid. Key words: speaking ability, generate ideas, tourism brochure pictures, descriptive text.
