Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This study discusses the sentence fragments and run-on sentences that are made by the students in writing essays. The research design was descriptive. The sample in this study was 31 students of English Department Academic year 2018/2019 of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument used was the final exam sheet of essay writing. Based on this research, students made 29 fragments and 38 run-on sentences. This study also showed that most students made comma splices that reach to 37 numbers.

The aim of this research is to see the effect of implementing Process Drama on students’ ability in doing story telling at grade 10th students of SMA N 1 Gunung Tuleh in 2021/ 2022 academic year. Pre-experimental with one group pre and post-test design was the design that used in this research. The population was the tenth grade students at SMA N 01 Gunung Tuleh that consisted of six classes. Purposive sampling was technique sampling that used to choose the sample. The samples were X science 1 students as the experimental class and control class. Telling two stories entitled Bawang Merah & Bawang Putih and Malin Kundang were the instrument of this research. The paired sample t-test was used to obtain the finding of the research .The paired sample t-test revealed a sign 2-tailed value of 0.00, or less than 0.05.Therefore, the first hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Through the implementation of Process Drama, students are becoming more adept in doing storytelling. The data's output suggested that students could improve their ability in doing story telling through Process Drama.

This article deals with students’ ability in paraphrasinga paragraphat The English Department Universitas NegeriPadang.This descriptive quantitative research aimed to analyze students' ability in paraphrasing a paragraph text based on Leonhard's paraphrasing rubric (2002) and to identify problems in students' paraphrasing based on the theory of Kennedy & Smith (1986). The sample of this research was 27 (twenty-seven) students of the K4 class at the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Padang, for the 2020 academic year. The data was collected using a paraphrasing test as the instrument in which they paraphrased a paragraph of text. The finding showed that the average score in the paraphrasing test was 51,9, categorized as unsatisfactory. The researcher also concluded the number of problems in students' paraphrasing a paragraph was 55. In general, 40% of students' paraphrases were classified as substituting inappropriate synonyms. 29% of students' paraphrases were classified as leaving out important information. 20% of students' paraphrases were classified as including too much of the original, 11% of students' paraphrases were classified as misreading the original, and there was no problem of adding opinion summarizing rather than paraphrasing found in students' paraphrases. Studying these two topics is very useful for understanding how students' ability to paraphrase a paragraph can be optimally increased.

The development of technology in the 21st century impacts all aspects of life, one of which is the field of education. Therefore, the teachers must be able to master technologies that can support learning so that they become 21st-century learning characters. This study seeks the technological knowledge of English teachers at Bukittinggi City in learning. This research used descriptive qualitative research because it explores and describes the ability of Technological Knowledge for English teachers. The participants of this study were the teachers and the students in Bukittinggi City. The selecting of participants used purposive sampling techniques and the selection of students used the accidental sampling method. The instruments were a questionnaire given to teachers and students, and semi-structured interviews. Then the supporting data was the lesson plan sent by a representative from the interviewee. In analyzing the questionnaire used quantitative method. For the teacher's questionnaire, the results are in the form of an average and then categorize their technological knowledge. And then, the students’ questionnaires obtained results in the form of percentages. Then for the lesson plan, use the document review method and the restatement interview from what was said. The findings of the research in the knowledge and application of technological knowledge has begun to be applied. However, most teachers’ abilities and skills in technological knowledge were in the average category. Therefore, the understanding and utilization of technological knowledge for English Vocational High School teachers must be expanded further in designing lesson plans, teaching and learning processes, and assessing the students.

Grammar is one important English component that need to be mastered starting from identifying and understanding parts of speech. Parts of speech are English basic component in which words are recognized and classified based on their lexical functions. They consist of eight major parts of speech, such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and interjections. Each part of speech has certain role in composing a sentence. In other words, it is important to be understood by EFL students in order to help them to write a correct sentence. By considering the importance of understanding parts of speech, this study was done to find out how the students’ understanding of parts of speech ease them to construct a sentence. It was a qualitative study. There were 31 students who took Basic grammar class as the participants of this study. The data were collected by English test and interview. The data were analysed narratively to describe how the students’ understanding of parts of speech can ease them to compose a sentence. Based on the result of the research, it can be stated that the students’ understanding of parts of speech could facilitate the students to write a sentence.

Synchronous and asynchronous learning are type of online learning mode that commonly used in online learning. The purpose of this research was to find outs students’ perception on synchronous and asynchronous learning during classroom discussion at Indonesian English Translation class of English Education Department at Universitas Negeri Padang. The sixth semester students taking Indonesian English Translation class of English Education Department at Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year of 2021/2022 was as the population of this research. There were 40 students who were selected as the sample using total sampling. This research used a descriptive research design. A closed-ended questionnaire was used to gain the data for this research. Based on the findings and discussion, it was indicated that almost all of the students had positive perception on the advantages of synchronous learning and asynchronous learning at Indonesian English Translation class during classroom discussion. It was also found that the students were more active to participate in a discussion forum on e-learning because they felt more confident about sharing ideas using text rather than speaking directly.

The process of changing learning produces a variety of different views. This study aims to reveal students' perceptions of using the zoom meeting application for online microteaching classes through pedagogical, socio-cultural, and technical aspects. The population in this study were twenty (20) 3rd-year students of the English education study program who had attended microteaching classes and of course were able to provide their views and opinions. It can be concluded that students have a relatively positive perception of using the zoom meeting application for online microteaching class. The results of the study represent the positive result in carrying out microteaching lectures online. Even though the lectures are conducted online, they lecture still runs according to the standard. For interactive learning applications that are used, students seem happy to use the Zoom Meeting application as a learning medium because apart from being practical and simple, zoom meetings also rarely cause problems that are difficult to handle.

The aim of this research is to compare the students’ speaking anxiety based on students’ learning style at second grade of SMP N 29 Padang. It was carried out using descriptive method. In learning style, the result of this research showed almost of 31 students in class VIII.1 of SMP N 29 Padang dominant in “Authority- Oriented” after that they dominant in “Concrete”, and just several students who dominant in “Communicative” learning style. Furthermore, based on speaking anxiety level, the result of this research showed almost of all students in class VIII.1 of SMP N 29 Padang dominant in “Anxious” level in the first position and in second position the students dominant in “Mildly Anxious” , but just several students who dominant in “relaxed” speaking anxiety level.

Classroom interaction is defined as an interaction between the teacher and learners, and amongst the learners in the classroom. Those interactions consequently lead to students’ attitudes whether it is positive or negative including in an International Class, especially in Biology Department. The research aims to find out how classroom interaction takes place between lecturer-students (L-S), students-lecturer (S-L), and student-student (S-S) and students’ attitudes towards the classroom interaction in International Class of Biology Department at Universitas Negeri Padang. This is a descriptive qualitative research conducted in the International class of Biology Department. The instruments of this research were observation, adopted questionnaire, and interview. The data analysis was analysed by categorizing each category of the patterns from FIACS. The participants of this research consisted of 41 students and 2 lecturers. From the five-meeting observation, the finding of the research revealed that dominant category of each pattern; explaining for L-S pattern, response for S-L pattern, and questioning for S-S. Those dominant categories were influenced by group discussion method that used in the teaching and learning process. In addition, students showed the positive attitudes towards interaction in the classroom, in which they had a passion and aspiration to maintain their ideas or thoughts independence.

During Covid-19, the learning system has changed to online. Many universities use various online learning platforms in order to get learning activities run as expected. Therefore, Universitas Negeri Padang implemented the use of E-learning. This study aims to see students' perceptions toward the features of E-learning UNP in the Paragraph Writing course. The research design used is descriptive quantitative with a questionnaire instrument consisting of 30 items. Then, English Education Students registered in academic year 2021 became the population in this study and 36 of them became the sample. The researcher found that students Perceived Easy of access with a mean of 3.27, Perceived Usefulness of 3.42, Perceived Instruction Delivery of 3.40. Additionally, they also gave positive attitudes such as feeling happy with a mean of 3.14, not bored 2.91 and like with a mean 3.23. It means, the students gave a positive perception of the use of E-learning features, especially the feature of delivering material in the Paragraph Writing class.
