Abstract

This research is classroom action research because it relates to efforts to improve learning practices in the classroom. The data collection technique used in this research is multi-technique or multi-instrument, namely: observation, measurement, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is descriptive quantitative analysis. The data obtained in the form of learning outcomes and activity observations were processed using descriptive quantitative analysis but first scoring and tabulated, then the frequency and percentage were calculated to be a reference in conducting descriptions. The results showed that; (1) The value of student learning outcomes class VII MTs Negeri Palopo in the first cycle of 20 students, there are ten students or 50% who meet the minimum completeness criteria, whereas in cycle II it increased from 20 students there were 16 students or 80% who met the minimum completeness criteria; (2) Thus, the action hypothesis proposed in this study is proof that if the talking stick model of learning is applied, the learning outcomes of the Indonesian language studies for grade VII students of MTs Negeri Palopo will increase.

Abstract

Intonation is a suprasegmental feature of language that constructs the meaning of utterances.  The meaning constructed can be different from the lexical meaning and syntactical structure. This paper tried to examine the intonation system in the Lampung language, especially the acoustic characteristics which distinguish between declarative and interrogative. In this research, the researcher applied the IPO approach to collect and analyze data. Data were gathered by recording native speakers uttering declarative and interrogative sentences that were segmentally identical. Having the data, a perception test was conducted to get the best utterances for each mode as a contour prototype. Next, both prototypes were analyzed respectively using Praat software to find out each acoustic characteristic. Then, they were compared to find the suprasegmental features that characterize the acoustic features of each sentence mode. Based on the analysis, both intonations differed in the pitch of initial, final subject constituent, final complement constituent, initial predicate constituent, final pitch, peak, range of pitch, and duration of utterances. In addition, pitch of peak (H1) and slope (H2) were identified as the most influential component in the formation of a sentence model. Therefore, experiments of manipulating those acoustic features (H1 and H2) and testing them on the perception of native speakers were held to prove the identification. The result of the perception test showed that the peak significantly distinguished the mode of the sentence, the higher pitch of the peak determined the interrogative mode. While the second identification did not give any contribution in creating the meaning.

Through those two approaches, representation theory can theorize the practice of meaning production and knowledge about Sasak woman. The analysis showed that Sasak women struggle their dignity as a woman. Rinjani and Malaysia was mobilized to construct the meaning of woman. Rinjani as a Sasak’s cosmological centre was used to justify the action to struggle the dignity of Sasak woman. Dignity cannot be reached even by money. Malaysia only gave pain. Malaysia did not give happiness, but only gave pain. Sri Rinjani’s effort in achieving dignity was helped by a rich Sasak man, who  was in the same age of his father. For the dignity, she marry with Pak Kamil, so the kindness was give as husband and wife. Dignity cannot be achieved by the effort of Sasak woman herself, but also by the contribution of Sasak man. The effort in achieving dignity was the construction of Sasak woman in 2000’s until now.

Abstract

Studies on interpersonal meaning have been well documented. However, few studies explored interpersonal meaning in the area of research articles. In responding to this, the present study tried to reveal interpersonal meaning in RAs’ discussion sections. The data taken were from five reputable international journals categorized in the subject of language and linguistics indexed by Scopus with the SJR value above one. Having been analyzed by using the theory of modality from Halliday (1994), the data demonstrated that three types of modality values were identified such as high, middle, and low. In addition, there were some disparities among the results investigated. If sequenced, the low outnumbered the middle and the high values. This suggested that the authors had different assessments towards the topics written.

Abstract

This study was an attempt to investigate the consecutive interpreting strategies used by an Indonesian interpreter, Yuliana Tansil, in the court setting. This study examined a trial court in English and consecutively interpreted it to Indonesian. Faerch and Kasper’s (1983) theory of consecutive interpreting strategy was used. The descriptive qualitative method was applied as the method of this study. Data were collected through video recording taken from official YouTube. The video then was transcribed carefully. The results showed that the interpreter used two types of consecutive interpreting strategies, namely reduction strategies, and achievement strategies. In terms of reduction strategy, the interpreter applied skipping, incomplete sentence, and filtering. Yet, the message abandonment was not found in this study. In terms of achievement strategies, the interpreter used both appeal for assistance and elaborate strategy. The results also indicated that the interpreter frequently elaborated and expanded the lexical meaning of words or phrases in the utterances. The interpreter used this strategy when she faced the difficult words in long utterances because of some cultural nuance. So, she elaborated on her understanding of the message by adding more information as a way of making the utterance in the target language to be understood better.
