Abstract

The term "swearing words" refers to diction that is deemed taboo, unpleasant, cursing, and restricted in discourse. However, there is no way to avoid it. It has so existed since the beginning of human spoken communication and continues to this day. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the swearing phrases in one of the holy scriptures, the holy Quran. This was done to determine whether swearing words exist in the sacred place or not. The researchers collected data by reading scripture and noting each indicated verse. The efforts were done three times to measure there was no any single datum which was left. Next, a data selection process was carried out to ensure the accuracy of the data by consulting Al Tabari's Tafseer book. After collecting a large amount of data, the researchers conducted a thorough analysis to determine: 1) the function of swearing words and 2) the origin of swearing phrases as depicted in holy text. The investigation revealed that there are two roles of cursing. According to the findings, the swear words acquired are employed to insult, to curse, and show furious emotions. The second discovery is that swearing words can come from five different sources. The categories are animal, mental, physical, safety, and respectability. Keywords: Swearing words, Holy Scripture, Qur’an.

Abstract

Bangkan Malayan, a dialect of the Malay language spoken by the indigenous people of the Bangka Islands, is integral to their cultural and social communication. This language facilitates familial bonds, community cohesion, and cultural preservation. Like many languages, Bangkan Malay has unique features, including phatic expressions. Phatic expressions are used not to exchange ideas but to build and maintain social contact. Understanding these expressions is essential for fostering social relationships and effective communication. This study analyzes Bangkan Malay phatic expressions, focusing on their forms and functions. Data were collected through natural conversations and interviews with native speakers, ensuring the purity and authenticity of the data. The analysis applied theories by Kridalaksana (2012) and Reranta (2022), classifying phatic expressions into particles, words, phrases, and combined forms. Functions of these expressions were examined through qualitative analysis and experiments with native speakers. The findings reveal various forms and functions of phatic expressions in Bangkan Malay. Particle expressions like /gǝ/, /seɁ/, /jo/, /kɑn/, and /keɁ/" serve to reinforce meaning, initiate statements, and maintain conversational context. Phatic clauses such as /oi pradeek/oi sǝpǝradiɁ/, /kǝnǝ lah makan jo/, and /kǝlaɁ lah pulaŋ ǝ/ are used to initiate and close conversations, reflecting the social values of politeness and hospitality in Bangkan Malay culture. Keywords: Bangkan-Malayan, Local Language, Phatic Expression

Abstract

In pragmatics, implicature is a branch of science that studies the meaning contained in an utterance. Implicatures provide an opportunity for speakers and interlocutors to have the widest possible relevance regarding what has been said. This research aims to focus on conversational implicatures, thereby describing (1) types of conversational implicatures containing sexist humor in Podhub Deddy Corbuzier, Vidi Aldiano with Ummi Quary and Wika Salim, (2) the implications that arise between conversational implicatures containing sexist humor in Podhub Deddy Corbuzier, Vidi Aldiano with Ummi Quary and Wika Salim. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using listening and note-taking techniques, after that it is analyzed using Paul Grice's theory of conversational implicature with Dell Hymes's conversational classification, after that it looks at the context of sexist humor using the theory of Shifman & Dafna (2010). Sexist humor often occurs because of inequality between men and women and is normalized. The results of this research obtained 21 conversational implicatures containing sexist humor, consisting of; 8 data imply insinuating, 4 data imply confirming, 3 data imply teasing, 2 data imply disappointment, 2 data imply displeasure, 1 data imply expecting and 1 data imply telling.

Abstract

This study examines the use of Javanese and Indonesian Bilingualism in the university environment. The research design employed a qualitative approach to gain in-depth insights into the phenomenon of Bilingualism. The participants included four fifth-semester students majoring in English Education, chosen for their bilingual experiences in using Javanese and Indonesian. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and the analysis of social interactions in academic and informal contexts. The data analysis involved thematic analysis. The results show that Javanese strengthen social relations in informal contexts, while Indonesians dominate formal situations such as lectures. The main challenge is the adaptation of non-Javanese students to Javanese and the risk of marginalization of local languages. Bilingualism has great potential in strengthening cultural identity and flexibility of communication. Universities are expected to support the sustainability of local languages through inclusive programs such as the introduction of Javanese culture and language. This strategy is important for maintaining cultural diversity and improving students' language skills in academic and social settings. Keywords: Bilingualism, Javanese language, Indonesian language.

Abstract

This article discusses the exploration of Javanese language variation used in the context of traditional markets in Magelang City, Central Java, which focuses on register. The definition of the register itself is one of the linguistic phenomena where a word can have different meanings depending on the context or in a particular field. We conducted this research in one of the traditional markets in Magelang City, Central Java. This research was prepared using qualitative research with data collection methods of participatory observation and data analysis in the form of audio recordings containing interactions between sellers and buyers. In this case, this research used descriptive data analysis techniques to understand Javanese language variation and identify specific registers and contextual meaning in the context of traditional markets. From the result of the analysis, some specific registers were found, such as "timbang" which means "weighing goods" in the market, but if outside the market, it would mean "than." From this research activity, it was also found that the factors that influence the register are social status, age, and power relations. Sellers tend to use Javanese "Krama" for older buyers or those with higher status, while Javanese "Ngoko" is used in informal situations or for buyers they already know. This study also states that there is a language shift where sellers often switch to Indonesian when interacting with younger buyers because they know that many young people today cannot or do not understand Javanese. In addition to communication, the register used in the context of this traditional market can also reflect local culture, such as the example of the word "prepegan," which means the state of the market, which is very crowded on the eve of Eid. In conclusion, understanding the Javanese language register is very important to improve effective communication and prevent misunderstandings in transactions in traditional markets, while strengthening social relations in the community.  Keywords: communication, Javanese language, register, sociolinguistics, traditional market

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the strategies employed by Ellen DeGeneres in using illocutionary acts during conversations on her talk show and examine the perlocutionary effects of her utterances on guests. Using Searle's speech act theory; the analysis focuses on Ellen DeGeneres' interactions with Michelle Obama and Portia de Rossi. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach and collects the data through library research. The findings reveal that Ellen DeGeneres primarily used assertive illocutionary acts in her talk show, effectively fostering rapport and guest participation. Her assertive strategies include sharing personal experiences and factual statements, guided conversations, and eliciting cognitive and emotional perlocutionary effects, including reflection, agreement, and validation from Michelle and Portia. This study concludes that Ellen DeGeneres' assertive and directive speech acts were key in building rapport and guiding guest interactions, prompting cognitive and emotional responses. English Literature programs should include speech act theory, with workshops and role-play to help students learn and apply it in talk shows or interview simulations. Additionally, media professionals should undergo development programs focused on assertive and directive speech strategies for more dynamic and meaningful interactions. Keywords: Assertive strategies, Illocutionary act, Perlocutionary act, Speech act theory

Abstract

This research aims to explain the influence of globalization on young people's use of the Javanese krama language, especially for university students. It used a qualitative approach, with open interviews as the primary information collection technique, to learn more about how globalization has impacted young people's usage of Javanese. This research applies descriptive analysis to understanding the impact of globalization on fluency, self-confidence, and the understanding of Javanese krama language in the youth generation. These findings show that from five interviewees, globalization affects the fluency and comprehension of Javanese Krama, and youth speakers needed more confidence to use Javanese Krama, either afraid of mispronunciation or not understanding the word. Globalization has impacted the use of Javanese Krama in the youth generation as an environmental factor; more often, Javanese Ngoko (casual Javanese) or Bahasa Indonesia is used as a means of communication in daily life.
