Abstract

Title: Architectural Conservation of Sonobudoyo Museum, Yogyakarta Sonobudoyo Museum has been experiencing many changes. More activities and collections have caused to the increasing number of rooms and new buildings. The problem is that the new building design is not suitable with the original building design and lay out by the Dutch architect, Thomas Karsten. It leads to the decreasing of the quality of the environment, even decreasing the cultural values of the museum as a heritage building. The aim of the research is to study the existing condition of Sonobudoyo Museum in order to understand changes of the original design. Evaluation of all buildings in Sonobudoyo Museum focused on their functions. Method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative. Data and findings of field surveys were analyzed in order to find the architectural characteristics of the museum and its changes. There are four conservation actions to be recommended, which are (1) preservation of buildings as their original design, (2) repairation and restoration buildings, (3) demolition of unapropriate buildings, and (4) location of new buildings.

Abstract

Title: The Study of Ecological Concept in the Central Library of Gadjah Mada University Ecological architecture becomes one of the concept as well as solutions in the building design which minimizes environmental damages and maintains the quality of human life. The central library of Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta is used as the research object to rate its ecological level. This study uses a quantitative method to rate its ecological level based on the ecological design principles of Sim Van der Ryn such as ecological accounting, design with nature, and making nature visible. The assessment parameters are based on some references such as the greenship of GBCI, the principles of tropical architecture, and the principle of building accessibility. The results showed that generally, the library has applied ecological concept well through some strategies such as extensive greening, energy efficiency, adequate natural lighting, slim building masses, shading elements, and some facilities for the difable. Some measurements are done to find out the ecological performance of the building such as energy efficiency by 39.17%; daylighting 300 lux at 60.67% of indoor area, visualization of solar radiation reception, and OTTV value by 19,85 watt/m2. However, there are some necessary evaluations such as leakage on the ceiling or the application of greenroof that can be further optimized.

Abstract

Title: Natural Light Intensity Analysis in Classroom; Case Study: Classroom at Bosowa University Lighting is an important part of buildings in supporting the productivity of human labor. Insufficient lighting can interfere with human activities and could cause health problems, like eye disorders. Building design must consider the functions and needs so that residents can feel comfortable. Good lighting levels can be achieved by utilizing natural and artificial lighting. The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of illumination in a room that is directly related to the openings of the building envelope and to analyze the different levels of illumination in classrooms with different orientations. Quantitative research methods by distributing measurement data in the form of tables, diagrams and graphs. Data analysis was performed using statistics and data analysis techniques, the results of the measurement were statistically descriptive. This study analyzed the differences in the level of illumination in the northern orientation and southern orientation classrooms. Based on the results of the analysis it can be concluded that the orientation of the building affects the level of illumination in the room. During the day the level of illumination is higher in the direction of orientation north than the direction of orientation south, especially the measurement point in the area close to the openings of the building envelope, but in this study the direction of classroom orientation towards the south is higher the level of illumination compared to the north orientation classrooms. This is understood by the treatment of building glass sheaths in the north orientation direction in the form of the use of frosted glass wallpaper, so it can be concluded that changes to the building facade affect the level of room illumination. The results of this study are expected to be a reference in building facade concepts and designing energy-efficient buildings.

Abstract

Title: Wayfinding Design Improvement for the Blind School in Surabaya and Development Opportunities for Other Public Buildings Yayasan Pendidikan Anak Buta (Blind Children Education Foundation or YPAB) Special Junior High School in Surabaya is a dedicated institution for teaching blind students. Unfortunately, the school is found less accessible for the blind because it was designed for the farming school with spread buildings’ footprints in the 1970s. A literature review and accessibility evaluation conclude that besides architecture improvement, a small architectural model is needed to teach the students to be able to conduct orientation and mobility. The model should be accessible to blind students, total blind and low vision, with various information such as voice, braille, contrasting colour, and tactile marking. This architecture model is designed in collaboration of YP AB teachers, Architecture Program Study, Electrical Program Study of Petra Christian University and Prototype Studio. The model is created with laser cutting and equipped with electronic circuits for the voice of wayfinding instructions for blind students. The model is found improving the blind students to practice orientation and mobility in the school. Further research pursues improving public building wayfinding for the blind persons as described in the State Library of Queensland (SLQ).

Abstract

Title: Urban Habitat in Kupang City The issue of urban space clash in Indonesia is not only in the level of space occupation but also in the loss of habitat-driving force in the city. It is also happening in the city of Kupang as capital of East Nusa Tenggara Province, and also as the border region with the state of Timor Leste. The city of Kupang developing at this time, continues to carry out the growth to the coastal areas . It is in fact contradictory to the regulations that have been made before. The area in this case study of the research is Pasir Panjang Beach - Kelapa Lima, where it is locate in previously a habitat for fishermen colonies in the coastal area of Kupang City. Next to this location is a public space. This study aims to determine the conflict of interest in the space utilization in the city of Kupang. The descriptive research methods will be used, through literature studies, Kupang City government documents, observations, and interviews with local communities. Based on the results of the analysis, there are deviations in the function of urban space, which initially is a public space, then turned into a commercial area. Thus, in this study, it can be concluded that urban space can be assessed in terms of its function and role within the city in reallity can be influenced through the process of adaptation, negotiation, and power play. Changes in function of the urban space can cause various kinds of urban problems, including social issues, the environment, and unbalanced city growth.
