Abstract

Literary texts contain complex literary information. Types of literary information are subjective information and objective information. In translating that aforesaid information, there are some obstacles both objective and objective obstacles. Therefore, translating literary works requires proper strategy. This paper examines certain strategies used by the students to render literary information in the process of first-drafting literary text translation. The data in this study are 27 prospective literary pieces of information expressing knowledge about culture, morality, and humanities carried out by the text of Wuthering Heights Chapter 1 by Emily Bronte that has been firstly translated from English to Indonesian by learners joining translation class. The method used in this study is a qualitative one. By adopting the literary translation strategy promoted by Kazakova (2015), the result of this study shows that most students tend to use helper-strategy to compensate for the peculiar information with more neutral equivalent terms in the target language although somehow, they are trapped in unbiased strategy for making the translation product more natural in general.

Abstract

In the classroom, for teachers, being able to communicate well is essential to stimulate students’ skills, especially in speaking. For English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, however, a spoken interaction or dialogue provides a challenge that must be overcome. Many studies map out that teachers’ strategies for questioning their students have a strong effect on students’ ability to speak. Using questions allows teachers to explore the material in greater depth and check students' understanding as they master the material discussed in class. Furthermore, motivation also plays an important role in evoking student responses when learning to speak. As a motivational example, reinforcement plays an important role in helping students speak. Most studies related to questioning strategies in classroom discourse focus only on strategies. However, while knowing student interest in lectures is important, the combination of questioning strategy and motivation is rarely implemented. In this regard, this study combines questioning strategies and reinforcement to get a clearer picture of students' verbal responses by asking teachers questions. The results indicate a high incidence of questioning strategy decomposition and language reinforcement during the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Social welfare is a condition that humans strive to achieve a decent life in terms of material, social and spiritual aspects. After World War II, Japan was known as a country that experienced rapid economic and social welfare improvements. In addition, a wide range of Japanese popular culture products such as Manga & Anime, J-Pop, Video Games, and others have also grown and accompanied the established life of Japanese society. Therefore, Japanese popular culture has been supported and can spread to all corners of the world. This situation can indirectly improve the economy and existence of the Japanese state internationally, although, since the 1990s, Japan has experienced a lost decade. This study aims to discover in depth the correlation between the welfare of Japanese society and the development of Japanese popular culture after World War II. This study uses historical and descriptive qualitative methods with a multidisciplinary approach, such as history, social science, and culture. The results of this study show that social welfare is not a factor that can directly relate to or influence the development of Japanese popular culture. Other factors that lead to a marketing strategy and technology utilization, such as talented creators who have been good at finding opportunities, mass media culture, and Japanese government policies can influence the development of Japanese popular culture in domestic and abroad.
