Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the degenerative diseases that requires long-term management to maintain stable blood glucose levels. The side effects of conventional antidiabetic drugs have prompted the search for alternative therapies that are safer and more effective. Orthosiphon stamineus (commonly known as Java tea or cat’s whiskers), a herbal plant well-known in Indonesia, contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that have potential antidiabetic properties. This article aims to review the potential of Orthosiphon stamineus in lowering blood glucose levels through a literature review of previous research findings. The method used is a literature review by searching databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed using keywords like "Orthosiphon stamineus", "antidiabetic", and "blood glucose." A total of seven relevant scientific journals published between 2015 and 2023 were selected based on topic relevance, full-text accessibility, and the use of both in vitro and in vivo tests. The study results show that Orthosiphon stamineus leaf extract significantly reduces blood glucose levels, inhibits the α-glucosidase enzyme, and enhances GLUT4 translocation and insulin secretion. Conclusion: Cat’s whisker extract (Orthosiphon stamineus) has been proven to significantly reduce blood glucose levels through mechanisms of GLUT4 enhancement, insulin secretion, and α-glucosidase inhibition in diabetic animal models. Further research is recommended to confirm its effectiveness and safety in humans.

Abstract

The high prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Indonesia, such as periodontal disease, malaria, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, highlights the need for safer and more affordable alternative therapies. One promising natural source is mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), which contains xanthone compounds with diverse biological activities. This study aims to review the potential of xanthones from mangosteen pericarp extract as active drug candidates. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by searching articles in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases using relevant keywords including “xanthone” and “Garcinia mangostana.” Eligible articles were selected based on inclusion criteria (2014–2024, full-text availability, relevance, and reputable indexing). From 221 identified studies, 9 key articles were analyzed in detail. The findings reveal that xanthone compounds exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antimalarial, antidiabetic, anticancer, cardioprotective, anti-Alzheimer’s, protective effects against oxidative stress in keratinocytes, and potential COVID-19 therapy through ACE2 and Mpro blockade. These results suggest that xanthones from mangosteen peel hold great potential to be developed as active compounds in modern herbal medicines. Nevertheless, further studies, particularly clinical trials, are required to validate their safety and efficacy.

Abstract

Emergency hypertension is a critical condition of high blood pressure accompanied by target organ damage, and requires immediate treatment to prevent serious complications. In the prehospital setting, early detection by the family is very important to prevent further harm. Factors such as family knowledge, attitudes, and behavior are considered to play a role in the early detection process. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and family behavior towards early detection of emergency hypertension in the prehospital environment in Desa Sindanglaka. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample amounted to 53 respondents who were families of people with hypertension. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets, then were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between knowledge (p = 0.052), attitude (p = 0.919), and behavior (p = 0.788) of the family towards early detection of emergency hypertension. There is no significant relationship between family knowledge, attitudes, and behavior with early detection of emergency hypertension in the prehospital setting. Education and increased family participation in early detection efforts are needed to reduce the number of complications due to emergency hypertension.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is the third leading cause of mortality in Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI), there were 1,220 reported cases of diabetes in children in 2018. As of 2023, this number had increased by 70% compared to 2010. The highest incidence in the Banyumas District was recorded in the Jatilawang Subdistrict. Various factors contribute to the rising number of diabetes cases among children, with parents playing a crucial role in implementing preventive behaviors. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the determinants of parental preventive behavior regarding diabetes mellitus in children. The research employed a cross-sectional study design and was analyzed using quantitative software. The study population consisted of parents with children aged 7–12 years in Jatilawang, with 99 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected by measuring the children's weight and height, interviewing parents using structured questionnaires, and testing children's blood glucose levels. The data were then analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical tests. The findings revealed a significant association between parental attitudes and preventive behaviors toward childhood diabetes (p-value = 0.019). Positive attitudes were reflected in practices such as providing nutritious meals, limiting sweetened and processed foods, supervising children's snack intake, encouraging physical activity, and ensuring regular health check-ups. In contrast, parental knowledge and income level were not significantly associated with preventive behaviors.

Abstract

Environmental pollution by heavy metals, particularly lead (Pb), has become a major global concern due to its harmful impacts on human health and aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze the health risks associated with the consumption of processed products made from Pterygoplichthys pardalis (suckermouth catfish) caught in the Ciliwung River, Jakarta, which were found to contain Pb exceeding the permissible limits. An observational design with an Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) approach was applied. Processed food samples in the form of shredded fish (abon) were analyzed using the X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) method to measure Pb concentration, followed by intake and Risk Quotient (RQ) calculations. The results revealed that Pb levels in shredded fish reached 1.3 mg/kg, significantly higher than the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) maximum limit of 0.03 mg/kg. The risk assessment showed RQ values of 17.4 for 5 years of exposure, 34.2 for 10 years, and 51.4 for 15 years, all exceeding the safe threshold (RQ > 1). These findings indicate a significant non-carcinogenic health risk, particularly affecting the nervous, renal, and cardiovascular systems if the product is consumed continuously. It can be concluded that processed P. pardalis products from the Ciliwung River are not safe for consumption due to the potential for lead toxicity in the long term. Therefore, strict monitoring of food raw materials from polluted waters, public education on heavy metal hazards

Abstract

Air pollution, particularly exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), is a serious health problem that may impair lung function in high-risk groups such as gas station fuel operators. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and individual characteristics with lung function disorders among gas station workers in Padang City. This research used an analytical descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach, applying environmental health risk analysis (EHRA) and environmental health epidemiology (EHE) methods. A total of 79 respondents from seven gas stations were selected, with data collected through interviews, measurement of PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations, spirometry testing, and assessment of individual characteristics. The findings showed that PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations were below the regulatory threshold; however, 30.4% of workers experienced impaired lung function. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between lung function and age, gender, and length of employment, whereas pollutant exposure levels, vehicle density, mask use, and smoking status were not significantly associated. It can be concluded that individual characteristics had a stronger influence on lung function disorders compared to direct pollutant exposure. Routine health monitoring, education on the use of personal protective equipment, and work-hour regulation are recommended to reduce health risks among gas station workers.

Abstract

The cases of vaccine-preventable diseases (PD3I) in Padang City in 2023 were 21 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), 133 cases of measles, and 5 suspected cases of diphtheria. Family involvement is essential for ensuring children receive complete immunization, including knowledge, attitude, and family support. The aim of this study is to identify factors associated with the completeness of basic immunization administration in children in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Village Work Area. The study design is an observational analytical cross-sectional study. Data collection took place from August 2024 to June 2025. The study population consisted of 194 mothers with children aged ≥15 months to 24 months, with a sample size of 63 using cluster random sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and document review, with data processing involving editing, coding, entry, cleaning, and tabulation. Analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test (CI 95%). The results showed a significant association between mothers' knowledge (p-value = 0.000) and family support (p-value = 0.027) with the completeness of basic immunization in children, and no association between mothers' attitudes (p-value = 0.140) with the completeness of basic immunization. It is recommended that health education and outreach activities be conducted in a systematic, comprehensive, and sustainable manner to improve public knowledge about basic immunization for children. These efforts can be carried out in collaboration with health promotion officers at the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Community Health Center through regular and scheduled health education.
