Abstract

This literature study aims to evaluate pharmacy students' knowledge and attitudes regarding pharmaceutical waste disposal from an ecopharmacology perspective. Ecopharmacology is a branch of science that examines the environmental impact of drug residues, particularly how pharmaceutical compounds affect ecosystems after disposal. This perspective is important because unused or improperly discarded medications can contaminate water and soil, and disrupt ecological balance. The study employs a qualitative literature review method by analyzing articles from the PubMed and Scopus databases over the past ten years. The results show that although pharmacy students possess basic knowledge about the environmental risks of improper drug disposal, there remains a gap in practical application. Ecopharmacology education has proven to play a significant role in raising awareness and fostering environmentally responsible attitudes. Conclusion: Pharmacy students have basic knowledge about the environmental impact of drug disposal, but its implementation is still suboptimal.Recommendation: It is recommended to integrate ecopharmacology into the pharmacy curriculum and provide proper and easily accessible pharmaceutical waste disposal facilities.

Abstract

Stroke is a common health issue among the elderly, primarily due to the aging process. Post-stroke changes in the elderly often include muscle weakness, decreased tissue flexibility, and sensorimotor control problems, which can lead to balance disorders. Ankle strategy exercise is a form of training that stimulates the musculoskeletal system, particularly in the lower extremities. This study aims to determine the effect of ankle strategy exercise intervention on static balance in elderly people after stroke. This research employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 17 elderly participants were selected from PSTW Budi Mulia 4, East Jakarta, using purposive sampling based on predetermined criteria. The intervention was conducted three times per week over a period of four weeks. Static balance was measured using the Functional Reach Test. Result : The average static balance score before the intervention was 15.75 cm, which increased to 23.88 cm after the intervention. Bivariate analysis using the paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion : Ankle strategy exercise has a significant positive effect on improving static balance in elderly individuals after stroke.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the potential of bioactive compounds contained in the Senggugu plant (Clerodendrum serratum) as a traditional medicinal plant useful in traditional medicine. This research is a systematic review of the literature with data search using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Inclusion criteria included research related to Clerodendrum serratum, research articles, and published in the last 10 years. From the initial search results of 61 articles, 8 relevant articles were selected for further analysis and it was found that various parts of the plant, especially roots and leaves, contain active compounds such as ursolic acid, flavonoids, saponins, and silver nanoparticles, which exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antarthritic properties. Laboratory and in silico studies support the effectiveness of the compound in inhibiting the activity of inflammatory enzymes and proinflammatory cytokines, such as COX-2 and TNF-α, which are involved in inflammatory processes and other chronic diseases. This therapeutic potential suggests that Senggugu can be a safe and natural alternative in the treatment of various diseases, while supporting efforts to utilize local plant resources to improve public health.

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia increased from 10.9% in 2018 to 11.7% in 2023, based on the Indonesian Health Survey. Individuals with type 2 diabetes are advised to consume low glycemic index, high-fiber, and nutritionally balanced foods, including snacks that help regulate blood glucose levels. This study aimed to develop smoothie formulations made from jicama, red dragon fruit, and dadih (fermented buffalo milk) as a functional snack for diabetic patients. A laboratory-scale experimental design was applied using three formulations: F1 (50:50:30), F2 (60:40:30), and F3 (70:30:30). Organoleptic testing was conducted using a 7-point hedonic scale with 25 panelists. Nutritional evaluations included proximate analysis, fiber (acid-base hydrolysis), antioxidant activity (DPPH method), and probiotic content (reference-based). Organoleptic data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). A significant difference was found in color (p=0.001), but not in aroma, taste, texture, or overall preference. The best formulation, F1, received the highest overall score (5.36). Per 100 g, the product contained 57.71 kcal, 1.71 g protein, 1.15 g fat, 10.13 g carbohydrates, 1.06 g fiber, IC₅₀ antioxidant value of 23,496.69 ppm, and probiotic count of 8.81×10⁵ CFU/g. The conclusion is Benada smoothies, particularly F1, were well accepted and show potential as a snack for diabetes. Further research is recommended to evaluate its effect on blood glucose and optimize antioxidant content.
