Abstract

This study aims to describe the critical discourse analysis of the editorial of Media Indonesia on January 3, 2,023 with the theme "Executive Defiance". The reason for choosing this theme is because this problem has attracted public attention to the government's defiance of the Constitutional Court's decision which stated Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning the Omnibus Law was declared conditionally unconstitutional, so the government had to revise it within 2 years. However, the government instead issued Perpu No. 2 of 2022. This has drawn criticism from various parties. This study aims to describe how the macrostructure, superstructure, and social cognition of Media Indonesia editorials with the title "executive defiance". The theory used is the Teun A Van Djik model with the documentation method and note-taking. After analysis, it was concluded that an editorial by Media Indonesia with the title "executive defiance" met the macro-structural requirements, namely: statement of opinion, argumentation, and affirmation. The straightforward superstructure of language uses declarative sentences in the form of statements and arguments. For social cognition, Media Indonesia is positioned as an opposition that sides with workers. Key words: Teun A. Van Djik, editorial, Perpu No.2/2022.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out to what extent the level of the kelemen ceremony is being begun to experience extinction in Bongso Wetan Menganti Gresik village. The extinction of the lexicon was caused as a reason for conducting research to find out the loss and shifting of the ancestral culture of people of Madurese ethnic descents. The main factors are internally and externally from the local community. This study used a qualitative approach with the theoretical perspective of Alfred Schutz. The selection of the location for this study used a purposive technique, namely the people of Madurese ethnic descents from generation to the next generation. The villagers perform ceremonies have lasted hundreds of years. The study in which used in this reserach is called as Culture. The tradition of the Keleman ceremony is one of the cultures that has been being running in the village community which is of Madurese ethnic descents. Abstract

News manuscripts before being published go through an editing process. This is done to minimize word error and making it easier for readers to understand. This study aims to describe the misuse of the di- prefix in Jawa Pos online news. This study is classified as a qualitative research by analyzing obtained data. The research data is in the form of words that use prefixes in news articles published by Jawa Pos Digital. Articles published from 25 February to 19 April 2023 are used as data sources. Data analysis techniques in this study uses three stages, (1) data collection, (2) data analysis, and (3) conclusion. Results from this study showed nine misuses of the di- prefix in online news articles, three misuses of the di- prefix followed by a place word and six misuses of the di- prefix followed by a noun. These misuses are classified into (1) combining the di- prefix followed by a place word and (2) seperating the di- prefix followed by a verb.

Abstract

Technological advancements have led humanity towards practicality in various aspects. The same applies to the realm of information, which moves faster and more agilely in its changes. Therefore, mass media plays a role and has control in shaping public opinion regarding certain events. The use of critical theory as a tool for examination and analysis in this research aims to observe the representation of news on Viva.co.id regarding the controversial Rabbani Advertisement Video case. This study primarily focuses on highlighting Rabbani as the marginalized party in the news coverage. The research adopts a qualitative approach using content analysis as the method. The study is limited to one news text published in a single section of Viva.co.id. The discourse analysis model employed is Theo Van Leeuwen's model, with the aim of examining and detecting how Rabbani is marginalized in a discourse. The research findings reveal the presence of one type of exclusion, namely nominalization, while inclusion comprises three types: differentiation, abstraction, and identification. The limitations of this study are due to the fact that it solely focuses on one news text. Keywords: Exclusion and inclusion, critical discourse, Theo Van Leeuwen.

Abstract

This study focuses on the coverage of Minister of Religious Affairs Yakut's statement regarding the call to prayer (azan) compared to the sound of barking dogs currently happening in Indonesia, as published in several online media outlets, particularly Tempo.com. While there are numerous other online media sources producing news related to this issue, the researcher attempts to analyze these two specific online media outlets. The aim of this study is to describe the critical discourse analysis of the "Regulation on the Use of Mosque Loudspeakers and Minister Yakut's Statement Analogizing the Azan with Dog Barking" found in the news article titled "Yaqut Reported Regarding Azan and Dog Barking, Here's What the Ministry of Religious Affairs Says" published on Tempo.com. The theoretical framework employed for the analysis is Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis. The research methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Based on the conducted analysis, it was found that the news article attempts to convey a message to readers regarding the pros and cons of the Minister's Regulation on the use of loudspeakers in mosques and the statement analogizing the Azan with dog barking. This is influenced by the social cognition of the news article's author and the social context in which the news article is produced. This is evident in the discourse structure of the news article, which conveys a message of religious tolerance amidst a diverse society with varying beliefs. Abstract

Today's phenomena or events regarding ideology, politics, economy, society, culture, and law can easily be known through print or electronic mass media coverage. The objectives of this research are: 1) to determine who is marginalized by the Bangka pos.com mass media in their coverage of the Mystery of Brigadier Josua's death, New Facts: Bharada E Admits to Being Ordered to Kill, and 2) to analyze the language strategies used based on Theo Van Leeuwen's Critical Discourse Analysis model. The research method employed in this study is descriptive. The research objects are news texts regarding the murder of Brigadier Josua in online mass media outlets, specifically Bangka pos.com on August 8, 2022, and epanrita.net on Monday, August 8, 2022. The findings of the two news articles indicate that the content of the Bangka pos.com news marginalizes Bharada E as the murderer of Brigadier Josua. The content of the news article on epanrita.net on August 8, 2022, titled "Revealed! Bharada E's Confession: Ordered by Superiors to Kill Brigadier J," marginalizes Bharada E as well but introduces another actor that suggests Bharada E is no better than Brigadier Ricky Rizal. Based on the data above, it can be concluded that discourse operates to define something, legitimize something, and blame others. Keywords: exclusion, inclusion, Theo Van Leeuwen's model

Abstract

This study aims to describe the analysis of critical discourse in online news from Kompas.com December 2023 edition based on Roger Fowler's Theory. The data source for this research is a viral news article from Kompas.com online news with the title "Viral: Husband Cheats with Mother-in-Law, Caught Red-Handed by Residents, Wife Traumatized." The method used in this study is descriptive with qualitative data analysis. Based on the analysis conducted by the researcher using Roger Fowler's theory, which determines the selection of vocabulary and grammar, it can be concluded that there are quotations with vocabulary for classification, quotations with vocabulary for discursive struggle, and quotations with vocabulary for marginalization. There are news texts that use active-passive grammar, news texts with passive-passive grammar, and news texts that use nominalization grammar. This research can be beneficial for learning and can provide insights and knowledge for future researchers. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, Roger Fowler's theory.

Abstract

This research discusses sexual harassment that occurs among women in online media coverage. Good media can provide balanced and informative information. Various reports related to sexual harassment experienced by women often represent someone within a discourse. Currently, the exploitation of women is carried out through more intellectual and sophisticated ways, one of which is through discourse expressed in mass media. Women in the media are positioned prominently visually but marginalized in meaning. If left unchecked, this will further emphasize the gender differences between women and men, resulting in an increased potential for gender oppression with women as the victims. The issue addressed in this research is the discourse analysis using Sara Mills' theory. Sara Mills' discussion on discourse theory revolves around feminist discourse as its main focus, addressing women's issues such as how women are portrayed in the news. The research method used in this study is literature review. The results of this study conclude that the texts exhibit bias in representing women in news texts across four different media sources.

Abstract

This research analyzes the use of Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory in criminal news concerning the murder of Brigadier Joshua on tvonenews.com, edition July 13, 2022. Data collection was conducted through three stages: (1) reading and understanding the discourse titled "Police Mentioned the Adultery Issue of Brigadier J with the Wife of Kadiv Propam Putri Ferdy Sambo Being Investigated, but..." on the tvonenews.com portal, July 13, 2022 edition, with the aim of obtaining a clear understanding of the discourse to be examined, (2) marking the parts of the discourse related to Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory, and (3) inventorying sentences in the discourse related to Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory using a data inventory format. The data analysis was conducted descriptively. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that there are four out of seven theories of Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory found in the criminal news about the murder of Brigadier Joshua on tvonenews.com, July 13, 2022 edition, namely objectivity-abstraction, nomination-categorization, nomination-identification, and association-disassociation. It can be inferred that in writing criminal news about the murder of Brigadier Joshua, the victim is marginalized by the writer. Although the journalists still conceal the identity of the actors in the news headlines, the way the news is written leads readers to perceive that the victim is the cause of all these events. Abstract

Towards the celebration of Eid al-Adha in 2022, there was a lot of discussion in the media, both print and online, about the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in livestock. The purpose of this research is (1) to describe the text structure of the news according to the critical discourse analysis approach by Teun A. Van Dijk, and (2) to describe the characteristics of critical discourse analysis in the news text. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research method using Teun Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model. The data source for this research was a news article titled "Critical Discourse Analysis using Teun A. Van Dijk's Approach on the News 'FMD Outbreak, Central Java MUI Reveals Conditions for Valid Sacrificial Animals'" published on jatengprov.go.id (Central Java Provincial Government Public Relations and Protocol Office) in June 2022. The data collection technique involved reading and note-taking. The data analysis used in this research was qualitative data analysis using an interactive model. The analysis process consisted of three steps: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) verification or conclusion. These three steps of data analysis were interconnected and had a sequential relationship. The results of the research showed that (1) the text structure of the news aligned with Van Dijk's theoretical structure, which includes macro structure, supra-text structure, and micro-text structure, and (2) based on the characteristics of critical discourse analysis, such as action, context, history, power, and ideology, several opinions in the newspaper text writing could be influenced.
