Abstract

This research analyzes the use of Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory in criminal news concerning the murder of Brigadier Joshua on tvonenews.com, edition July 13, 2022. Data collection was conducted through three stages: (1) reading and understanding the discourse titled "Police Mentioned the Adultery Issue of Brigadier J with the Wife of Kadiv Propam Putri Ferdy Sambo Being Investigated, but..." on the tvonenews.com portal, July 13, 2022 edition, with the aim of obtaining a clear understanding of the discourse to be examined, (2) marking the parts of the discourse related to Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory, and (3) inventorying sentences in the discourse related to Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory using a data inventory format. The data analysis was conducted descriptively. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that there are four out of seven theories of Theo Van Leeuwen's Inclusion Theory found in the criminal news about the murder of Brigadier Joshua on tvonenews.com, July 13, 2022 edition, namely objectivity-abstraction, nomination-categorization, nomination-identification, and association-disassociation. It can be inferred that in writing criminal news about the murder of Brigadier Joshua, the victim is marginalized by the writer. Although the journalists still conceal the identity of the actors in the news headlines, the way the news is written leads readers to perceive that the victim is the cause of all these events. Abstract

Discourse analysis is a method used to uncover the meaning and communication messages present in a text, both in its textual and contextual aspects. This means that the meaning of a text or communication message cannot solely be derived from the explicit written text. Sara Mills' discourse model focuses on discourses about feminism, emphasizing the positions of subjects and objects within the text. Feminist discourse highlights how a text represents women. In reality, women are often portrayed as inferior and in the wrong compared to men in texts. The approach used in this analysis is Sara Mills' discourse approach. The author examines a discourse for analysis titled "Sad Case: 9 Children Raped, Main Perpetrator Still Underage" from Detik.com. The results of the discussion indicate that the author portrays women as objects depicted in news stories. However, on detik.com news, women are also positioned as subjects with the opportunity to narrate events they have experienced from the beginning to the aftermath of rape. In feminist discourse, women are often depicted not as subjects but as objects in many news texts. In this case, women are objectified, and their positions are often defined as mere storytelling materials, victims of abuse, or rape victims, unable to represent themselves. Through the analysis conducted on detik.com media, women are portrayed as victims of rape. The news presented on detik.com depicts women more as a vulnerable group, while men are shown to hold power, rendering the victims powerless. Consequently, when represented in news texts, women are placed in a marginalized position. Keywords: Discourse analysis, Sara Mills approach, feminist discourse.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) can serve as a tool and method to examine the relationship between discourse, society, and culture (Fowler, 1997). Therefore, it can be said that CDA uses language to analyze inequalities in various fields such as economics, politics, social issues, culture, and education. According to Theo Van Leuween, the marginalization of certain social groups can be observed based on their presence or absence in a discourse. Some are excluded from the conversation (exclusion), while others are included in the conversation (inclusion) (Eriyanto, 2009). This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with the note-taking technique. The analysis of news using Theo van Leeuwen's approach reveals the use of various strategies in shaping narratives. The news implements inclusion and exclusion, utilizing passivization, nominalization, and objectification-abstraction to guide the reader's understanding. This approach also involves nomination-categorization and nomination-identification, establishing the identities of actors, victims, and families. Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) examines language as 'discourse,' where language is understood as one element within social processes that dialectically relate to each other. Critical discourse analysis precisely aims to explore these dialectical interconnections within the tradition of critical social science. In this research, the researcher will employ Norman Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis, which examines discourse analysis through three theories: Text Analysis (Microstructural) related to cohesion and coherence, grammar, and diction; Production Practice Analysis (Mesostructural) dealing with the text production process, text dissemination, and text consumption, such as work patterns, workflow, and routines in news production; Social Cultural Practice Analysis (Macrostructural) related to situational, institutional, and social aspects. This study utilizes a qualitative descriptive method to deepen the critical analysis description of news discourse. The research data consists of words, phrases, or sentences in two online news discourses supporting the research problem. The data collection technique employed is documentary study. The news regarding the arrival of Rohingya refugees in Aceh published by VIVA.co.id becomes the focus of critical discourse analysis using Norman Fairclough's approach. This news reflects the text production process involving microstructural, mesostructural, and macrostructural aspects. In microstructural analysis, language use and representation are highlighted. Phrases like "coming to Indonesia using old boats" and quotes from netizens create negative stereotypes about Rohingya refugees. Social interactions are reflected in conflicts and societal concerns represented by these comments. In mesostructural analysis, the selection of topics, framing, and source determination becomes the focus. Choosing to report the Rohingya refugee issue with a predominantly negative framing reflects editorial production decisions influenced by preferences. Determining sources from netizens and UNHCR creates variations in perspectives. Macrostructural analysis highlights the social, political, and cultural values that shape the news. The Rohingya refugee crisis and global migration politics form the macro background influencing news production. Indonesian cultural values and ideology are reflected in the stigmatization of refugees. In conclusion, this critical discourse analysis reveals how text production practices, social interactions, and macrostructural contexts are interconnected. This news not only reflects internal language and media dynamics but is also tied to power, ideology, and cultural values within society. This analysis opens up space for a deeper understanding of narrative construction and its impact on public perceptions of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia. Abstract

This study discusses sexual violence against women in online media coverage. Good media can present balanced and accurate information. Various news reports related to sexual harassment, which are often experienced by women, represent individuals within a discourse. Today, the exploitation of women is carried out in more intellectual ways and is cleverly packaged, one of which is through the discourse conveyed in mass media. Women in the media are positioned prominently in visual terms but are marginalized in meaning. If this continues, it will reinforce the gender disparity between women and men, leading to the potential rise of gender oppression with women as the victims. The issue addressed in this research is discourse analysis using Sara Mills' theory. Sara Mills’ discourse theory revolves around feminist discourse analysis, where she examines how women are portrayed in the news. The research method used in this study is a literature review. The results of this study conclude that the text exhibits bias in representing women in news texts across three different media platforms. Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Sexual Harassment, Sara Mills
