Abstract

The focus of this research was to find the unfamiliar words of Minangkabaunese in classic Minangkabaunese Advices of “Pitaruah Ayah” by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah. The purposes of this research are: (1) To find the unfamiliar words for Minangkabaunese young generations in classic Minangkabaunese advices entitled “Pitaruah Ayah”by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah (2) To find the meaning of the unfamiliar words (3) To find the class of words of the unfamiliar words. This research was concern to find the current status of several words in Minangkabaunese which possible to become unfamiliar for its young generations through sampling processes in the district of Nanggalo Kota Padang. From the research 88 unfamiliar words of Miangkabauese were found in classic Minangkabaunese Advices of “Pitaruah Ayah” by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah. The most dominant class of words of the unfamiliar words of Minangkabaunese is noun amounted 40.9% of the data. And 48 % of the unfamiliar words were not found in the dictionaries of Minangkabaunese to Indonesian language. Several factors influence the occurrence of the unfamiliar words  such as (1) language change of Minangkabaunese (2) The language interference of Indonesian language.

Abstract

Lexical variation is the different use of lexicon as a linguistic element in particular language. There have been many researchers who conducted an analysis of lexical variation in dialects of minangkabau language. However, there is no study about lexical variation which analyze the lexical variation in Maninjau and Tiku subdialect. Thus, this research aimed to analyse the lexical variation in Maninjau and Tiku subdialect. The data is 200 words taken from swadesh list and 34 other basci words. The data is collected from the native spaker from different villages or kanagarian in these two area. This study aims to find out the lexical similarities and lexical differences. Furthermore, it used a simple calculation of dialectometric technique to determine the percentage of dialect differences. This research is a descriptive study with qualitative approach. The result of the findings shows the number of lexical similarities is higher than the lexical differences. It is found the 152 similar lexicons and 82 different lexicons. From the calculation of dialectometric technique, it is found the percentage of lexical differences 34%

Abstract

The purposes of this analysis are to expose the issue about the acts of demolishing stereotypes which is done by African-American man and to know the contribution of the narrator, plot and setting in revealing the acts of demolishing stereotypes. This analysis is related to the concept of orientalismby Edward W. Said that is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the actions of an African-American man who struggles to demolish the negative stereotypesthat can be seen from his efforts to live as an independent person andhave good behavior.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of masculinity terror which have done through women in the Democratic Republic of Congo and to know the contribution of the character, plot/conflict, and setting in revealing the masculinity terror. This analysis is related to the feminist concept by Catharine MacKinnon that is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the characters experience the masculinity terror that can be seen from their mental and physical condition.

Abstract

This research focuses on word formation processes found in Forum Jual Beli Hewan dan Perlengkapan Hewan Kota Padang (Padang Facebook Trading Forum of Animals and Animals Equipment). The aims of this research are (1) to find types of word formation processes, and (2) to identify parts of speech of the terms involved. This research is a descriptive research. The results of the analysis of data are presented in the form of description and explanation. Data in this research were 95 special terms used in the activity of trading in FJB Hewan dan Perlengkapan Hewan Kota Padang. These data were gained and analyzed by means of observation and interpretation by the researcher. Results of the research show that there were nine processes of word formation involved in the creation of trading terms in FJB Hewan dan Perlengkapan Hewan Kota Padang. They were 34 borrowings (35,79%), 15 abbreviations (15.79%), 12 clippings (12.63%), 10 blendings (10, 53%), 9 compoundings (9,47%), 6 affixations (6,32%), 5 letter symbols (5,27%), 3 reduplications (3,16%), and 1 backformation (1,05%). Then, there were four parts of speech in which the trading terms belong to. They were 56 nouns (59%), 16 verbs (16.90%), 22 adjectives (23%), and 1 adverbs (1.05%).

Abstract

Indonesian language consists of some different languages and dialects. This variety of language leads Indonesian people into bilingual, even multilingual community. The diglossic situation cannot be separated in daily life of people who lived in bilingual or multilingual society, such as Javanese language. The difference use of Krama (H variety), Madya (M variety) and Ngoko (L variety) obligated the speakers to know how to use the language function according to place and condition of the participants. This study investigates the profile of diglossic Javanese in three generations. This study aims to find out (1) the profile of diglossic Javanese, (2) the variety of language choice, and (3) the factor that affected the language choice. This research is a kind of descriptive research, because the researcher described and analyzed the profile of diglossic Javanese in three generation. The findings of this study reveal that in the first generation they are use H variety and M variety in communication, in the second generation they are use all of the three varieties depending whom they speak to. Meanwhile, in the third generations they mostly use ngoko (L variety). The used of krama lexicon was replacing with the lexicon of ngoko in third generation. There are several factors that have contributed to the respondents’ choice of using a certain variety when communicating. The used between the three varieties took place depending mostly on the addressee, the situation and the purposes of communication.

Abstract

In social communication, the using of euphemism is important to establish and maintain the relationship, because euphemism can be used to avoid unpleasant words in communication. The purpose of this study is to find out the forms and types of meaning. In this article, theory of forms and types of meaning are introduced by Warren (1992) and Leech (1981). However, there are two problems in this article. (1) what are the forms and (2) the types of meaning of euphemism used by Ustad Abdul Somad in his preach, The result shows that from 60 data, 12 forms of euphemism with loan word (30%) is the most occurred and 5 types of meaning are found with conceptual meaning (43.3%)  is dominant types. The result of the study is loan word from Arabic is the dominant form because the preach talks about islam. Then, background of Ustad Abdul Somad who Studied in Egypt for his bachelor degree which used Arabic language also influence the word choice of using euphemism. Concerning the types of meaning, conceptual meaning is the highest frequencies in this study. It probably because the loan word which do not change the meaning from the source to target of language.

Abstract

In linguistics, everyone has his own way of expressing his feelings. One such way is by using taboo language. Taboo language not only happens in everyday life, but also in a movie. This study aims to find the types of taboo language as well as the functions contained in every utterance used by the characters in the western film entitled "The Wolf of Wall Street". The data of this research are in the form of sentence or utterance containing taboo language which is spoken by every character in the film. The data were collected from the film "The Wolf of Wall Street" taken from the www.layarkaca21.com. Then, choose the utterances containing the taboo language and grouped them into types and functions of taboo words. Type of the research is qualitative and quantitative research. Based on data analysis, it was found that there are 3 types of taboo languages with the highest percentage in the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street" namely; Obscenity(64,8%),Epithets(13,1%), and Vulgarity (8,2%). For the function of the use of taboo language wasfound 3 functions with the highest percentage as well. They areto creation of strong interpersonal (35,6%), provide catharsis (24,5%), and to draw attention to oneself (17,8%).

Abstract

AbstractMulitimodal is a study that analyzes the meaning of text containing two or more semiotic systems; linguistic, visual, audio, gesture and place. Analyzing multimodal through semiotic approach has been used in the analysis of cover magazine (Gill, 2015), mascara advertisement (Baykal, 2016), cartoon movie (Wulan, 2017), and music video (Brady, 2015). Meanwhile, in this research the writer analyzes multimodal in beauty product advertisement especially lipstick product. This research is intended to, 1) investigate how verbal and visual elements conveyed meanings in both Wardah Lip Cream Matte Lipsticks and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. 2) find the comparison between verbal and visual elements used in Wardah Exclusive Matte Lip Cream and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the data of analysis, it reveals that the visual and verbal processes of these advertisements are in harmony and they complement each other to give a complete message to the audience. The analysis also reveals the similarities of these two advertisements in the three level of metafunctions. In ideational metafunction the most dominant processes used are material and attributive processes, for interpersonal metafunction the most dominant mood used is declarative and for textual metafunction the most dominant theme used is unmarked topical theme.Keywords: Advertisement, beauty product, multimodal analysis, verbal element, visual element.

Abstract

One of the ways to express the idea or opinion in communication is through humor. It is not only to express the idea, humor also can be functioned to entertain, one of them through television program, talk show. This research aimed to compare the types of verbal humor that found in Ini Talk Show. This research was descriptive comparative. The data were the clauses which consist of verbal humor within transcribed video. The total of video were 5 videos. The data were analyzed by using theory of Shade (1996) and General Theory of Verbal Humor (1991). Theory of Shade (1996) was used to analyze the types of verbal humor and General Theory of Verbal Humor (1991) used to analyze the types of verbal humor that found in both object. The result of the research showed that there were 192 numbers of verbal humor found in Ini Talk Show. It is found that 10 out of 12 types of verbal humor found in Ini Talk Show. It means, the hosts of the show were good in creating humorous situation in the show.
