Abstract

This analysis explores the issue of oppression towards women as a result of patriarchal practices, traditional traditions, gender roles, and social expectations in the novel The Widows of Malabar Hill (2018) by Sujata Massey. This is qualitative research that relies on text and applies feminist literary criticism to analyze the issue in the novel. This analysis aims to find out the forms of oppression experienced by the upper-class women in the novel. This research found that upper-class women experienced several forms of oppression including gender-based discrimination, gender-based marginalization, powerlessness, restricted access to formal education, restriction on property sales rights, being forbidden to work in public, limitation in freedom of mobility, cultural and religious practices, gender-based violence, and lack of legal rights. This research also indicates that even in the upper social classes, gender and patriarchal culture are the main causes of women's oppression. This oppression limits the opportunities that upper-class women have to develop their true potential.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of three poems by Zelda Quakawoot entitled Your Way- Our Way- Truth (2015), Langston Hughes entitled I Look at the World (2009), and Dan Davis entitled Tribal Lines (2000). This analysis explores the resistance of the Aboriginal people represented by the speakers in the three poems in obtaining their rights and justice. This resistance needs to be carried out by the Aboriginal people to fight the acts of brutality they experienced . An analysis of the three poems also reveals the extent of resistance Aboriginal people took against brutality. The study of these poems uses the concept of Post-Colonial theory by Edward Said. The results of this study indicate that the Aboriginal people already have the awareness to fight toward the acts of brutality that they experience. The analysis discusses: 1) Forms of brutality toward Aboriginal people, 2) impacts of brutality towards the lives of Aboriginal people, 3) Resistance made by Aboriginal people against brutality.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the phenomenon of rude and cold speech patterns carried out by the main character of the children's story in the film The Secret Garden 2020. This study aims to analyse the types and triggers of Impoliteness Strategies carried out by the main character. In children's stories, there tend to be main characters who are friendly and kind so that they can be examples for their readers. However, unlike the story from the novel "The Secret Garden" by F.H. Burnett, the main character of this story is an unfriendly child, therefore the researcher wants to know what triggers the unfriendly attitude of the main character, as well as what forms of impoliteness are carried out by the main character. The researcher chose the 2020 film adaptation as the data source for this study. The story adaptation of the novel "The Secret Garden" version of 2020 presents a story through audio-visuals that can be observed carefully. Data collection was carried out by analysing the script of the film The Secret Garden 2020. The researcher collected utterances that were estimated to contain types of impoliteness strategies according to the theory of "Impoliteness Strategy" introduced by Culpeper (1996). The results of the study showed that there was the use of three of the five types of impoliteness strategies found, namely as well as several triggers for impoliteness strategy actions.

Abstract

A local language may disappear due to some factors. Modernity and melting pot are able to shift the local language. Malay Kepulauan is the local language of Batam island, and it tends to be left. It needs to be documented. This qualitative research gathered information of Malay Kepulauan from the locals. The aim was to reveal the process of its articulation. The data were taken from some Kampong Tua: Nongsa, Sanggau, Tanjung Uma, Telok Air, and Tanjung Riau. Observational method included semi-structured interview and record. The data in term of sounds were transcribed phonemically to capture the process of deletion and insertion. The result of this research was that Malay experienced reciprocal assimilation, synchronic dissimilation, aphaeresis deletion, syncope deletion, apocope deletion, epenthesis insertion, neutralization, and metathesis. The phonemic environment of phonological rules is /b/, /p/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /Ɂ/, /m/, /n/, /Ɍ/, /z/, /ʝ/, /h/, /j/. /w/, and /l/. The vocalic sounds involved the alteration; /ʌ - ə/, /ʊ - ɒ/, /e - I/. The benefit of having assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, insertion, neutralization, and metathesis in pronouncing is resulting in smoother, more effortless, and more economical transition from one to another sound. However, phonological rules phenomena in Malay Kepulauan do not change the meaning of the words lexically

Abstract

This study aims to find the types and differences in nominalizations used in the speeches of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates: Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto, and Ganjar Pranowo. Using data from a YouTube video hosted by CSIS Indonesia titled "Pidato Calon Presiden Republik Indonesia: Arah dan Strategi Politik Luar Negeri," which aired from November 7th to November 13th, 2023, the analysis reveals key linguistic strategies. Anies Baswedan employs 90 nominalizations with a balanced distribution between deverbal (41%) and deadjectival (59%) types. In contrast, Ganjar Pranowo uses 89 nominalizations, favouring deverbal types (42%) over deadjectival (58%). Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo analyze the frequency and percentage of different affixation types in their respective languages. Anies Baswedan has the most frequent affixation, "Ke-an," with 57% of the total. In contrast, English nominalization categorizes affixation to determine types, such as deverbal and deadjectival, using suffix affixation processes. Indonesian nominalization, however, lacks such categorization, relying solely on the base word formed. These findings provide insights into the distinct linguistic styles and rhetorical preferences of the candidates.

Abstract

AbstractEcological issues in the context of Niger-Delta, Nigeria have been approached mostly from the perspective of environmental degradation, and marginalisation in previous studies. However, in literary pieces, which are mostly the dominant objects of analysis in those studies, there are underlying linguistic imports, which are reflexive of the beauty of the literary discourses revolving around the Niger-Delta environment. It is based on this backdrop that this study sets out to examine selected poems of Tanure Ojaide from an ecolinguistic perspective. To achieve the aim of the study, five poems are selected purposively from Ojaide’s Songs of Myself and analysed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data analysis. The data is also examined using the Eco-critical Discourse Analysis (EDA) approach. The findings from the study reveal the use of rhetorical devices to converge towards emphasising the beauty of the ecological characteristics of the physical environment. The use of imagery by the poet draws on readers’ socio-cognitive instincts towards the appealing to their emotive senses. In conclusion, the use of the eco-linguistic approach to examine the poems has not only revealed the poet’s intents but has also demystified the myth behind the ecosystem of the Niger Delta.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the linguistic devices used to persuade and manipulate audiences of political discourse in the 2020 US Presidential election. This study focused on Donald Trump's and Joe Biden's rhetorical and framing strategies in their speech and debate. A qualitative method was used to conduct the study to analyze the data. The study aimed to find the rhetorical and framing strategies of Donald Trump and Joe Biden and to find how they persuade and manipulate audiences of the political discourse. The findings reveal that the rhetorical strategy, Pathos, or the appeal to emotions, was utilized the most by Donald Trump compared to a more balanced use of all rhetorical strategies by Joe Biden. At the same time, logos were focused more on debates for both candidates. For framing strategies, both candidates utilized emphasis the most to stress the importance of an issue or to concentrate on a message. According to the analysis, Donald Trump mainly used persuasive language, which can be seen by referencing "patriots" several times to evoke a sense of unity, which is different compared to his debates, where he is very manipulative in using statistics and facts that are not fully referenced and an abundance of straight lies. This can be seen when he claimed that he cut "drug prices," which is false. Joe Biden used a persuasive strategy by referencing history and events such as "Charlottesville".
