Abstract

This research aimed to identify types and purposes of sarcasm used in Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube videos. Ryan Reynolds is famous actor who starred in various movies including Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Free Guy and Red Notice. This study uses the theory proposed by Camp (2011) and Kreuz (1991) regarding types and purposes of sarcasm respectively. This study uses descriptive method to analyse the utterances, as the source of the data. The data for this research were 37 sarcastic utterances taken from 15 videos from Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube channel. Three out of four types of sarcasm found after analyzing the data using Camp’s theory. They were propositional sarcasm (23 occurrences), illocutionary sarcasm (13 occurrences) and ‘like’-prefixed sarcasm (1 occurrence) with zero occurrence of lexical sarcasm. The second finding showed that all purposes of sarcasm occurs throughout the 37 data obtained. They were ‘to mock’ (15 occurrences), ‘to insult’ (13 occurrences), ‘to be funny’ (6 occurrences), ‘to criticize’ (2 occurrences) and ‘to show anger' (1 occurrence). It can be concluded that the most prominent type of sarcasm used in Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube videos is propositional sarcasm with 23 occurences and the most prominent used purpose of sarcasm is to mock with 15 occurrences.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis studies of communication in political contexts have scrutinized the use of language by politicians striving to win public opinion related to some topic or conflict. utilizing Teun A. van Dijk's framework for political discourse analysis, this thesis examines discursive devices and ideological squares in four speeches related to the Russia Ukraine conflict in 2022 from president Joe Biden and president Vladimir Putin. The study described in this thesis combines micro-level text analysis focusing on discursive devices and macro-level analysis focusing on the ideology formed by the ideological square that represents "us" and "them within it. the data analysis explains the discursive devices that only the president uses Biden namely "disclaimer" "euphemism" "national self-glorification" "number game" and "polarization", on the other hand discursive devices that are only found in president Putin namely "authority" and "comparison". in using ideological square president Biden uses " de-emphasizing negative "us" more than president Putin and on the other hand president Putin uses "emphasizing negative "them" and "de-emphasizing positive "them" more. The results of the study also show that the two presidents conveyed different ideological perspectives and attitudes on the 2022 Ukraine and Russia conflict based on the four speeches analysed.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the maxim that are classified as violating by the main characters in Rush Hour Movie 1 and to find out the maxim violation by the main characters influence to the characterization in the movie. This study uses a descriptive approach. Data and data sources are taken from the dialogues of the main characters which they are Lee and Carter  in the Rush Hour Movie 1 movie. Data collection was carried out by analyzing using Grice's theory (1975). The results of the data obtained from this study are that there are 4 maxims that are violated in Rush Hour Movie 1 with a total of 27 maxim violations. Of the 4 maxims, there are 14 violations of the maxim of quality, 2 violations of the maxim of quantity, 6 violations of the maxim of relevance, and 5 violations of the maxim of manner. This study provides valuable insight into how the cooperative principle does not occur properly due to the violation of maxims in their communication, then, the characterizations main characters that are violated from the four maxims are Liar, Braggart, Narcissitic, Overstate, Not Relevant, Unresponsive, Ambiguity, and Insolent.

Abstract

This analysis explores the issue of Postcolonial trauma caused by dehumanization in the novel "Washington Black" by Esy Edugyan. This analysis is text-based interpretation by applying Franz Fanon's theory of dehumanization can cause Postcolonial trauma. This analysis is to find out how dehumanization can cause Postcolonial trauma to colonized people. The result of this research found several act of dehumanization that makes colonized people feel Postcolonial trauma such as animalistic dehumanization and mechanical dehumanization.

Abstract

This study focused on the code mixing in YouTube channel used by Livy Renata which analyzed the types and levels. This research applied descriptive qualitative method, which describes the data that researcher collected form of words, phrases, sentences that contain other language mixtures. The data were code mixing utterances in the form of word, phrase, and sentence uttered by Livy Renata in her YouTube Channel. The results of the research on the type of code mixing used Hoffman's theory (1991) found 345 data collected, there were three types of code mixing in Hoffman's theory. They were intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and involving change of pronunciation. Based on the analysis of the level of code mixing used the theory of Mckay & Hornberger (1996) found 320 data, there were two levels of code mixing, which were the level of lexical and level of syntactic.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a common method utilized in numerous research which is an analysis used to critique political speech. The purpose of this study is to find out discourse topics and discourse strategies presented by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to reveal her arguments about Gender Equality in her speech entitled “Impatient for Change: Global Action Gender Equality”. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative approach. Further, this study utilised information from Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka’s speech “Impatient for Change: Global Action Gender Equality” and concentrated on the topic of gender inequality. The findings of the study revealed that: (a) there were 4 discourse topics found: ‘Impatience for Gender Equality’ 9 times (45%), ‘The Challenges for Gender Equality’ 4 times (20%), ‘Women’s full participation in peace processes and negotiations’ 3 times (15%), and ‘Gender equality is not only the work of UN Women’ 4 times (20%), and (b) there were 7 discourse strategies found: Burden 6 times (30%), Lexicalization 6 times (30%), Implication 2 times (10%), and Presupposition 3 times (15%), Hyperbole 1 time (5%), Disclaimer 1 time (5%), and Illustration 1 time (5%).

Abstract

Pragmatics analysis and hate speech are closely related in which hate speech is analyzed based on the context between speakers and hearers that affect communication, so the message conveyed by the speaker contains the meaning of action in accordance with the context. Hate speech is an action or utterance that crosses the line and causes a negative impact. The aims of this research are to analyze intentions of hate speech and motives of hate speech which mostly used by netizens in Hailey Bieber’s Instagram comment section. The data of this research were utterances from netizens in the comment section of one post on 2 November 2023 Hailey Bieber’s Instagram. This research used theory by Kreidler (2002) to analyze intentions and also theory by Pinker (2011) to analyze motives of hate speech in one post of Hailey Bieber’s Instagram comment section. This research was a descriptive qualitative method. From 220 data, it was found that there were five intentions of hate speech, namely mocking, accusing, blaming, insulting, and insinuating. Also, five motives of hate speech namely instrumental violence, dominance, revenge, ideology, and sadism. Insinuating was mostly found for intentions of hate speech and sadism was mostly found for motives of hate speech used by netizens on Hailey Bieber’s Instagram. This research found that netizens tend to deliver hate speech comments against the celebrity explicitly.

Abstract

This research investigated the types and levels of code mixing based on Deddy's podcast video on his YouTube channel. The aim of this research is to determine the types and the levels of code mixing in Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast. Qualitative the video, transcribing the video’s audio, identifying the code-mixing and level code- mixing, and re-checking. After the process, the result indicated that the most code-mixing used in the utterances of the guest star in Deedy's Corbuzier podcast video is intra-sentential with the total number is 108 method used in this study to analyze the data and describe the findings. There were 3 Podcast videos of Deddy Corbuzier anakyzed in this study: Agnez Mo.. Mantanku Ter…, Papa Meninggal, Azka Ikut Papa.. I Love You More Than You Know, 500 Juta Tuk Luna Maya.. Tapi.. Ada Tapinya..!!. Some methods followed to collect the data include searching the video, selecting and downloading the video, watching occurances, meanwhile followed by intra-lexical type is 7 occurances. Furthermore, the level of code mixing that mostly appears is clause type 50 occurances then followed by word level 36 occurances, phrase level 31 occurances, baster level 7 occurances, and idiom 1 occurances.

Abstract

Language use refers to the way speakers of a language use their language in different situations and contexts, including variations in written and spoken language. This research aimed to explore the dynamics of Bahasa Tansi use by the Sawahlunto community. It focused not only on language use at and outside but also on language use by children and the younger generation, as well as the language attitudes of the Sawahlunto people towards Bahasa Tansi. The research used a descriptive approach with data collection methods including Swadesh lists, questionnaires, and interviews with native Tansi speakers in Tansi Baru and Sikalang Village. The results showed that based on the lexical and phonological analysis of the Swadesh list, Bahasa Tansi was classified as a creole and was still not strong enough to be categorized as a language. These findings were derived from a comparative analysis of 206 words from the Swadesh list comparing Minangkabau and Bahasa Tansi. To this day, Bahasa Tansi is still used by the people of Sawahlunto in daily communication, with questionnaire results showing 86.8%. The community's positive attitude towards Tansi was also reflected in the questionnaire results, reaching 94%.

Abstract

Artikel dapat disajikan dalam beberapa bahasa. Terutama artikel dari jurnal internasional yang sebagian besar terbit dalam bahasa Inggris dan masih ada beberapa bahasa lainnya. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan Google Translate dalam menerjemahkan kalimat kompleks pada artikel Catharina Van Lieshout (2022) dan menganalisis teknik penerjemahan manakah yang paling dominan digunakan oleh Google Translate. Peneliti menemukan 147 data kalimat kompleks dari artikel yang diteliti. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Pertama, peneliti membaca seluruh isi artikel, dan menandai kalimat kompleks yang diteliti. Setelah diberi tanda, kalimat kompleks tersebut diterjemahkan menggunakan Google Translate dan dijadikan tabel. Kemudian peneliti menganalisis teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dengan menggunakan teori Molina dan Albir (2002). Hasil analisis data peneliti hanya menemukan 10 dari 18 jenis teknik penerjemahan menurut Molina dan Albir. Diantaranya adalah reduksi, kreasi diskursif, penerjemahan literal, modulasi, adaptasi, peminjaman, penetapan padanan, transposisi, partikularisasi, dan variasi. Penerjemahan literal merupakan teknik yang paling dominan dalam penerjemahan, dimana bahasa sumber diterjemahkan kata demi kata tanpa melihat susunan makna padanannya.
