Abstract

This thesis explores the use of figurative language in football commentary, focusing on Peter Drury's commentary on the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cup final matches. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language and meanings used by Peter Drury during the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cup final matches. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using Abrams and Harpham's theory to analyze figurative language, alongside Leech's theory for meaning. Out of 53 instances of figurative language, metaphor emerged as the dominant type in each World Cup final edition, appearing 11 times in 2014, 11 times in 2018, and 10 times in 2022, totaling 32 times (60.38%). The connotative meaning was the most prevalent among the seven types of meaning, occurring 29 times (54.72%). Types of figurative language such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, litotes, and euphemisms were not found in this study. The type of meaning that was not found reflected meaning. This analysis reveals a change in the pattern of Peter Drury's figurative language use in the last three editions of the World Cup finals, in addition to metaphors that appear dominant each year, hyperbole has decreased significantly in the three editions of the World Cup finals. In 2014 it was found 6 times, in 2018 it was found 3 times, and in 2022 it was found 2 times. This analysis also highlights the role of figurative language in creating an immersive experience for the audience.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the relationship between gender and power in the short story, Accidental Transients, by Randa Jarrar. It discusses how women’s freedom is limited in a patriarchal society. In this kind of society, there is male supremacy which places men as the superior one. This study applied feminist existentialist concept by Simone de Beauvoir. It engages with an idea that women have to be able to become subjects in order to be not dominated by men. Furthermore, this study employs content analysis method. The data used in this study are sentences that show the issue of gender and power in Accidental Transients written by Randa Jarrar. The results of this study show that the main character, Dina, in patriarchal life is burdened by her gender role to be responsible for domestic tasks. In addition, she also does not have the freedom to act as she intends. Dina's character in this story shows that male dominance over women is still difficult to eliminate in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types and functions of deixis in the lyrics of the Barbie movie soundtrack. Data were collected from the soundtrack's lyrics and analyzed using Huang’s (2007) theoretical framework. The study identified 377 data of deixis, highlighting its crucial role in character development and personal references. Social deixis, with 57 data, and spatial deixis, with 47 data, underscore the significance of social relationships and locational context within the narrative. Temporal deixis, appearing 33 times, delineates the temporal framework of the lyrics. Discourse deixis and emotional deixis, with 16 and 4 data respectively, are less frequent, indicating that while references to the ongoing discourse and expressions of emotional proximity are present, they are less central to the lyrical content. This analysis underscores the multifaceted nature of deixis in enriching the narrative and emotional depth of the lyrics.
