Abstract

Feed constitutes the largest cost component in poultry production; therefore, alternative feed ingredients that are economical and sustainable are required. This study aimed to analyze the effect of concentrate substitution using Dried and Fermented Quail Waste (DFQW) on slaughter weight and carcass percentage of Joper chickens. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and three replications, namely P0 (100% concentrate), P1 (95% concentrate + 5% DFQW), P2 (90% concentrate + 10% DFQW), and P3 (85% concentrate + 15% DFQW). A total of twelve male Joper chickens aged four weeks were used and reared until the end of the experimental period. The observed variables included slaughter weight and carcass percentage. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The results showed that DFQW substitution had a highly significant effect (P < 0.01) on slaughter weight and carcass percentage of Joper chickens. Treatment P1 produced a slaughter weight (865.67 g) comparable to the control (891.33 g) and the highest carcass percentage (58.67%). In contrast, increasing DFQW levels to 10% and 15% resulted in decreased slaughter weight and carcass percentage. It can be concluded that DFQW can be used as a concentrate substitute up to a level of 5% without reducing the production performance of Joper chickens.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi performa pertumbuhan dan karakteristik morfometrik cempe kambing silangan Boer × Lokal (Boerlok) kelahiran kembar berdasarkan tiga genotipe dengan proporsi darah Boer yang berbeda, yaitu BL (50%), BBL (75%), dan BBBL (87,5%). Penelitian dilaksanakan selama delapan bulan (Januari-Agustus) di PT Shadana Arifnusa Training Farm, Kabupaten Lombok Timur, Nusa Tenggara Barat. Sebanyak 120 ekor cempe kelahiran kembar prasapih digunakan sebagai materi penelitian, dipilih secara purposive sampling. Variabel yang diamati meliputi bobot lahir, bobot sapih umur 90 hari (BS90), pertambahan bobot badan harian (PBBH), tinggi pundak, panjang badan, dan lingkar dada. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif (mean ± SD) menggunakan SPSS versi 17.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cempe BBBL (87,5% Boer) memiliki bobot lahir tertinggi (jantan: 2,740 ± 0,427 kg; betina: 2,660 ± 0,409 kg). Bobot sapih dan PBBH tertinggi diperoleh pada genotipe BBL (75% Boer), dengan PBBH jantan 112,40 ± 15,72 g/hari dan betina 100,20 ± 17,28 g/hari. Ukuran morfometrik (panjang badan, lingkar dada, tinggi pundak) juga meningkat seiring peningkatan proporsi darah Boer, meskipun genotipe BBBL tidak selalu lebih unggul dibanding BBL. Disimpulkan bahwa peningkatan proporsi genetik Boer hingga 75% (genotipe BBL) memberikan respons performa pertumbuhan dan morfometrik paling optimal pada fase prasapih pada kelahiran kembar.

Abstract

Milk production in Indonesia falls short of the country’s ever-increasing demand, leading to reliance on milk imports. Selecting high-quality dairy cows by visual inspection of key body parts is a common practice. This study aims to analyze the relationship between udder volume and teat size on milk production in dairy cows at KUD Giritani, Bogor. The study utilized 100 lactating Frisian Holstein dairy cows. The observed variables included udder volume, udder depth, teat length, and teat circumference. Data analysis employed Pearson’s correlation and both simple and multiple linear regression. The results indicated that udder volume, udder depth, teat length, and teat circumference had a significant relationship (P < 0.05) with milk production, with udder volume showing a moderate correlation (r = 0.514) and the other factors exhibiting low to very low correlations. Regression analysis indicated that these factors contribute to milk production; however, the majority of variation in milk production remains influenced by other factors, such as genetics, feed quality, and management practices. The conclusion of this study is that udder volume and teat size can serve as indicators for selecting productive dairy cows; however, other supporting factors must also be considered.

Abstract

Efforts to improve food quality, particularly those emphasizing sustainability and health aspects, have become a major focus in the food processing industry. This study aimed to determine the effect of different concentrations of lemon peel essential oil on the physical characteristics of whey-based films. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The treatments consisted of varying concentrations of lemon peel essential oil: 0% (L1), 2% (L2), and 4% (L3). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and when significant differences were observed, further analysis was performed using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that the addition of essential oil had no significant effect (P>0.05) on film thickness and elongation, but had a significant effect (P<0.05) on tensile strength. The thickness values ranged from 0.14 to 0.16 mm, elongation ranged from 62.10% to 62.77%, and tensile strength ranged from 5.20 to 5.51 MPa. Increasing the concentration of essential oil tended to decrease the tensile strength of the film due to disruption of intermolecular protein interactions and the formation of a discontinuous phase within the film matrix. Meanwhile, the plasticizing effect of the essential oil contributed to increased film flexibility at certain concentrations, although it did not meet the minimum elongation standard. Thus, the addition of lemon essential oil affects the mechanical properties of whey-based edible films, particularly by reducing tensile strength.

Abstract

Lust induction is an activity to standardize the occurrence of estrus and ovulation symptoms in livestock by manipulating the female reproductive organs using hormone preparations. This study aims to accelerate the acceleration of estrus in beef cattle by using hormone induction so that mating can be carried out as soon as possible. This study used 10 non-pregnant beef cattle in the Luteal phase and in healthy condition. The sample was randomized and divided into 2 groups with each group consisting of 5 cows (each group 5 replications). In group P1, the sample was injected with a single prostaglandin (PGF2α) of 2ml/head, and in group P2, the sample was injected with prostaglandin (PGF2α) of 2ml/head + estradiol of 5ml/head. This study will compare the estrus rate and intensity of estrus based on scores 1, 2, and 3. The parameters used in the study were estrus rate and intensity of estrus. The data obtained in the study were tabulated using the Excel program and analyzed statistically using the Chi-Square test. The results showed no difference in estrus rate (P>0.05) between groups P1 and P2, both showing 100% estrus. However, the intensity of estrus/estrus score showed a very significant difference (P<0.05) between groups P1 and P2. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of prostaglandin hormone (PGF2α) in the P2 group as much as 2 ml/head + estradiol as much as 5 ml/head is more effective in inducing estrus in beef cattle.

Abstract

Bali cattle beef is a superior local commodity and an excellent source of animal protein for humans. Improving meat quality can be achieved through innovative supplemental feeding, specifically with the addition of liquid smoke. The material used in this study was beef from the Longissimus dorsi muscle of Balinese cattle. These cattle were given supplemental feed containing liquid smoke at varying levels (0%, 1%, and 2%), combined with four different aging (maturation) periods: 0, 2, 4, and 6 days. The observed parameters included the degree of acidity (pH), shear force, and fat oxidation levels (TBA). The study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement and three replications. The results indicated that the addition of liquid smoke to the feed and the aging period had a significant effect on pH stability and the inhibition of fat oxidation (TBA) in Balinese beef. Furthermore, increasing the liquid smoke level and prolonging the aging period decreased the pH value, while increasing the shear force value and fat oxidation levels in the Longissimus dorsi muscle of fattened Balinese cattle.
