Abstract

Obesity is a risk factor for developing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD). It occurs due to the accumulation of fat resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Changes in the lifestyle of adolescents, who tend to prefer fast food and have limited physical activity, put them at risk of obesity. The development period of Covid-19 gave rise to policies that limited activities and encouraged efforts to improve nutritional intake to minimize the risk of transmission. This study aims to determine the pattern of consumption of food sources containing trans fatty acids among students attending Private Higher Education institutions in Bengkulu City during the Covid-19 pandemic era. Research Method: This study is a survey method as a preliminary investigation into the consumption patterns of food sources containing trans fatty acids among new students of private universities in Bengkulu City during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of 40 students, selected using a purposive sampling method. The consumption patterns were assessed using food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) distributed online via Google forms. The data was processed descriptively. Results: The study found a high proportion of consumption frequency in dairy and processed foods, as well as ice cream and beverages. Fried foods also showed a high consumption frequency, including fried tofu and tempeh, fried eggs, bakwan, fish, and fried chicken. Furthermore, products containing high-frequency Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO) consumed were bread, biscuits, and wafers. Conclusion: The study concludes that processed dairy products, ice cream, and fried foods are consumed frequently among the participants. However, the consumption of vegetables occurs only >3 times per day, with a focus on green vegetables. Future research should delve into the relationship between consumption patterns and adolescent nutritional status and lipid profile. Keywords: consumption frequency, trans fatty acids, adolescents

Abstract

Tuberculosis is a disease in Indonesia that has received special attention from the Ministry of Health. Tuberculosis is a deadly infectious infectious disease, this is because Mycobacterium Tuberculosis has infected the world's population. Transmission of tuberculosis can be through droplets during coughing or sneezing and can infect other healthy people. Tuberculosis patients receive routine treatment with Anti-Tuberculosis Drugs. In the process, this drug has an effect on the number of leukocytes which previously increased in number due to infection and the presence of antibodies that bind to the leukocyte cell membrane causing lysis of leukocyte cells. Checking the number of leukocytes is useful as a diagnostic basis because it can describe the occurrence and process of the disease in the body of tuberculosis patients. The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of tuberculosis patients based on gender and age, describe the type of leukocytes of patients who received anti-tuberculosis drug treatment during the May-July 2024 period in the Bengkulu City area. In this study, a research design with a cross sectional descriptive method was used to see the characteristics of leukocytes during tuberculosis patients receiving treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs. The samples used were tuberculosis patients who were receiving anti-tuberculosis drug treatment in the work area of the Nusa Indah Health Center, Bengkulu City. Patients will have their blood samples taken for analysis of their leukocytes without looking at the identity of the treatment period. The results of the count of basophils, eosinophils, rod neutrophils and monocytes showed normal values, while the results of the count of segment neutrophils, lymphocytes, leukocytes were found in some patients with abnormal values. This is possible because the anti-tuberculosis drugs taken can reduce the number of leukocytes that increase at the time of infection and in some patients are abnormal because it is still in the early stages of treatment.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The number of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients continues to rise annually, one of the contributing factors being dietary changes that affect gut microbiota. Glycemic control is a primary goal in diabetes management, which can be achieved through the intake of dietary fiber such as resistant starch that functions as a prebiotic. Tanduk bananas are a source of resistant starch, and their content can be enhanced through modifications such as pre-treatment involving heating and rapid cooling. This study aims to analyze the effects of combined pre-treatments, such as boiling, steaming, and storage at low temperatures (refrigerator and freezer), on the physicochemical quality of flour from local Indonesian tanduk bananas. The study involved 11 treatments with 3 replications, totaling 33 samples. The evaluated parameters included organoleptic properties, physical quality (bulk density and yield), and chemical quality (starch and resistant starch content). The results indicated that pre-treatment affected the color and texture of the banana flour, with steaming + freezer treatment influencing texture. This treatment significantly impacted physical quality and resistant starch content, but not starch content. The highest yield was found in boiling + freezer treatments for 24 and 48 hours, while the highest bulk density was observed in boiling, steaming, and refrigerator storage treatments. Resistant starch content increased with steaming + 48-hour freezer and boiling + 24-hour freezer treatments. In conclusion, the best treatments were boiling stored at 24-hour freezer and steaming stored at 48-hour freezer.   Keywords: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; Tanduk Banana; Pre-treatment.

Abstract

Water is a vital element that supports human life on earth. Water has various functions, such as for drinking, bathing, washing, and as a means of transportation in rivers and seas. Based on WHO (World Health Organization) data, the need for water in developed countries ranges from 60-120 liters per person per day, while in developing countries, including Indonesia, the need for water is only around 30-60 liters per person per day. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the combination of Tray Aerator and filtration with slow sand filter media (SPL) in reducing iron (Fe) levels in dug well water in Padang Serai Village, Bengkulu City. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest design (Sugiyono, 2015). The results showed that the decrease in iron (Fe) levels after using Tray Aerator reached 0.761 mg/l. Meanwhile, filtration with a slow sand filter was able to reduce iron levels by up to 0.672 mg/l. The combination of the two methods gave the best results with a decrease in iron levels of 0.872 mg/l, from an initial level of 1.022 mg/l. Of the three treatments, the combination of Tray Aerator and slow sand filter filtration proved to be the most effective in reducing iron (Fe) levels. To increase effectiveness, it is recommended to increase the thickness of the slow sand filter media and increase the number of trays on the Tray Aerator to maximize the process of reducing iron levels in dug well water.

Abstract

The Asteraceae family has beneficial medicinal effect as anticancer, such as Chromolaena odorata and Mikaina micrantha. This study we investigated the potency of two Asteraceace plants and determined their active compounds. The plants were extracted using distilled water and then fractionated with chloroform. The phytochemical content, and anticancer potency was determined by literature study. The results showed that both plants contained essential oils, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and steroids. Toxicity to shrimp larvae through the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BLST) showed that both plants were toxic , so they were thought to be anticancer. Ombuin and vanylic acid compounds in C. odorata are reported its bioactive compound has activity anticancer. M. micrantha has less potential as an anticancer and more activity as an anti-inflammatory.
