Abstract

A receptionist is the first and the last person guests talk to in a hotel. If s/he makes a good impression with skillful services and good communication followed by other hotel staff, the guests have no reason to complain, and oppositely, they would come back again. This study aims to analyze aspects of Javanese politeness which is expressed by hotel receptionists during their communication with guests in Yogyakarta. Location of the research is Yogyakarta City, Indonesia. Data include four kinds of conversational discourse: (1) checking guests in, (2) providing guests with information, (3) dealing with guest complaints and (4) checking guests out. Techniques of collecting data include observation and field notes, recordings, questionnaire, in-depth interviewing and document analysis. The findings show that hotel receptionists in Yogyakarta use aspects of Javanese politeness on one occasion, but violate them on another occasion. The aspects of Javanese nuanced politeness they use and violate are sumanak ‘friendly’, sabar lan sareh ‘patient and with ease, calm’, tepa slira ‘showing a feeling of sympathy or solidarity’, andhap asor ‘giving a high respect, appropriate appreciation’, empan papan ‘matches with the setting and occasion’ and nuju prana ‘pleasing, satisfying’.

Abstract

Nagari (local village) of Painan is a fishing area located in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatera Province. Sometimes the number of fish fished in this area is so low. The community believes the reason for this is some kind of mystical strength. Therefore they try to avoid it by holding ‘tolak bala’ (rejecting misfortune) ceremony. The main question of this study is what role does the ceremony play in the Painan fishermen community? The data is analysed using functional structural theory of Redcliffe-Brown. As a materialization of local wisdom, the ceremony is important among the fishermen community. Religious, social, and economic aspects of the ceremony can change the perception of society. Fishermen realize the harmony between human and supernatural creatures. In the other hand, the ceremony helps develop and preserve the social binding and teach them about the importance of saving and economical spending.Keywords: ‘tolak bala’, local wisdom, fishermen

Abstract

The purpose of this reaseach to reveal how the West Pasaman regency’s civil servants’ understanding of Islamic values particularly those associated with; (1) sincerity, (2) patience, (3) piety and trust in working influence their work culture. This study uses a quantitative approach. Data is collected through questionnaire and documentation. Quantitative data analysis was performed through multiple regression analysis and partial. This reaserch indicates that (1) the comprehension of Islamic values including sincerity, patience, piety and trust in work at the same time influence the work culture with 38.9% contribution, which is considered low category. (2) Sincerity in work influences work culture at 11.5%, which is very low category. (3) Patience in work influences work culture at 25%, which is low category. (4) Piety and trust in work influence work culture at 31%, which is low category.

Abstract

This research aims to; (a) identify women’s involvement in the development of nagari (local state), (b) identify community efforts in empowering women to participate in the nagari development, (c) identify the women empowerment programs conducted by related agencies and institutions, (4) indentify the pattern of women empowerment in order to participate in the nagari development, and (5) identify community values that underlie women’s participation in the nagari development. This research is descriptive qualitative. It is conducted in coastal areas of Padang Pariaman regency, represented by each nagari in each of these districts: Ulakan Tapakis, Sungai Limau, Batang Gasan, and Lubuk Alung. Data is collected using questionnaires, interviews, direct observation, and library research. Data is analyzed qualitatively. The result shows that; 1) only a small number of women involves in the nagari development, due to the low level of education, 2) most community’s efforts in empowering women to participate in the nagari development depend only on the information or initiatives by the government whose meetings are part of government programs, 3) women empowerment program is held by the local agencies and institution, 4) women empowerment encouraged by the respondents are held in the coastal areas with coastal tourism, where women are active in coastal-based entrepreneurship, 5) women participation in every aspects of political, social, and cultural development are based on the value adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah (traditional value based on the interpretation of the Koran).Key words:  women involvement, participation, development

Abstract

Sub'haaThe preparation of the artwork entitled "Subhaa", is inspired by the Minangkabau cultural phenomenon. This work focuses on the feelings of children who will be circumcised, the pressure and fear felt by the child who will be circumcised tilled in the form of Polymetrik art works. Circumcision or commonly called Basunaik by Minangkabau society is a Sunna that must be run boys of Islam; indirectly circumcision is also required for boys in Minangkabau. In the area of darek (mainland) khitan has its own ceremony, begins with a child who will be circumcised is brought to the bako house to change his clothes, then paraded around the village, after arriving at home circumcised will be held. In the evening there will be entertainment in the form of randai and bagurau saluang. This piece of music is in the form of a new composition. The performance focuses more on the composition of sound as a contextual meaning to be conveyed to the appreciator. This work is a little contrary to the aesthetics that have been awakened in the brain and soul of the arts in the Sendratasik Department of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. But it cannot be denied that a new works will create its own aesthetic realm. Keywords: Basunaik, Artwork Music. Abstrak Penyusunan karya seni yang berjudul “Subhaa”, ini terinspirasi dari fenomena budaya Minangkabau. Karya ini menitik beratkan garapan pada perasaan anak yang akan dikhitan, tekanan dan ketakutan yang dirasakan oleh anak yang akan dikhitan digarap dalam bentuk penggarapan Polymetrik. Khitan atau biasa disebut Basunaik oleh masyarakat Minangkabau merupakan sunah yang harus dijalankan anak laki-laki Islam, secara tidak langsung khitan juga diwajibkan bagi anak laki-laki di Minangkabau. Di daerah darek (daratan) khitan memiliki upacara tersendiri, diawali dengan anak yang akan dikhitan dibawa ke rumah bako untuk mengganti baju, lalu diarak keliling kampung, setelah sampai di rumah baru diadakan khitan, malamnya diadakan hiburan berupa randai dan bagurau saluang. Karya musik ini berbentuk komposisi garapan baru. Penggarapan lebih menitik beratkan kepada penggarapan bunyi sebagai makna kontekstual yang akan disampaikan kepada apresiator. Karya ini memang sedikit bertolak belakang dengan estetika yang sudah terbangun dalam otak dan jiwa kalangan seni di jurusan pendidikan sendratasik FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. Namun tidak bisa dipungkiri sebuah karya garapan baru akan menciptakan ranah estetikanya sendiri.Kata Kunci: Basunaik, Karya seni Musik.

Abstract

Politeness strategies in primary school is the foundation of character building. This study aims to identify the power and orientation of positive politeness strategies used by the children at the age of elementary school as the character of Indonesian. This study applies qualitative research with single-case study strategy. The data source consists of all elementary school teachers and students in Surakarta and Yogyakarta. The data were collected by using active observation and focus group discussion.  The data are in the forms of  teaching materials. The data were analyzed using heuristic model proposed by Grice & Leech by applying the principles of reconciliation, cultural and social harmony. The result shows that the elementary school teachers and students having the Javanese cultural background indicated by (a) building the nature of psychological as the core of positive politeness and nation character by improving the empathy feeling, looking for the agreement, giving respect,  appreciating the achievement, and giving the profit to another; (b) prioritizing the duty instead of the rights; (c) creating the wise of directive act strategyby positioning the listener ; (d) respecting others to show the suavity and politeness. Therefore, the Javanese society in line with directive politeness action always put the environment society to keep its social-societal relationship. Keywords: directive politeness, harmony principle, javanese cultural,positive politeness, socio-societal AbstrakStrategi kesantunan di sekolah dasar adalah fondasi pembentukan karakter. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kekuatan dan orientasi strategi kesantunan positif anak-anak di usia sekolah dasar sebagai karakter bangsa Indonesia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan jenis studi kasus tunggal. Sumber data terdiri dari semua guru sekolah dasar dan anak-anak usia SD di Surakarta dan Yogyakarta. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan observasi aktif dan diskusi kelompok fokus. Data tersebut berupa bahan ajar. Data dianalisis menggunakan model heuristik yang diajukan oleh Grice & Leech dengan menerapkan prinsip rekonsiliasi, budaya dan keharmonisan sosial. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa guru sekolah dasar dan anak-anak usia SD yang memiliki latar belakang budaya Jawa ditunjukkan dengan (a) membangun sifat psikologis sebagai inti dari kesantunan positif dan karakter bangsa dengan meningkatkan perasaan empati, mencari kesepakatan, memberikan rasa hormat, menghargai pencapaian, dan memberikan keuntungan kepada yang lain; (b) memprioritaskan tugas dan bukan hak; (c) menciptakan strategi tindakan yang efektif dengan memposisikan pendengar; (D) menghormati orang lain untuk menunjukkan kesantunan. Oleh karena itu, masyarakat Jawa sejalan dengan tindakan kesopanan direktif selalu menempatkan masyarakat lingkungan untuk menjaga hubungan sosial-kemasyarakatannya.Kata Kunci: kesantunan direktif, prinsip harmoni, budaya jawa, kesantunan positif, sosio-sosietal.

Abstract

Tak Oyai dance is a cultural heritage of the community of Pesisir Selatan Regency, particularly Painan Timur. The research focused on Tak Oyai dance in the Aie Duku Village, where the dance is herited from their ancestors. This research used qualitative method; where data is collected by observation, interviews, and documentation using equipments such as video and audio recorder, also camera. Research findings prove that Tak Oyai dance is recognized as a cultural heritage in the social and cultural life of the community, however it is not recognized as the current tradition and culture of the Aie Duku community, therefore it is rarely presented in entertaining and ceremonial event. In the other hand there is still an attempt preserve the dance although not yet successful.

This article is a summary of research studying Minangkabau traditional costumes, with focus on the costume of penghulu (head of tribe), which has symbols in it. The penghulu costume as a kind of visual language reflects the position of the wearer in the society, in correlation with his title, as a carrier of the Minangkabau traditional norms. Abstract

The work culture of civil servants in this decentralization era tends to come fromthe working culture of each ethnic. The difference of culture applied causes thedifference of civil servants’ way, behavior, and action when performing their work. Thisresearch article aims to discuss one of the working cultures of the civil servants fromMinangkabau ethnic group named galie. This research was conducted by usingdescriptive-qualitative approach, and the data was collected trough observation,interview, and documentation study. Data is validated by triangulation and sourcetriangulation methods.Tthe data analysis is based on Miles and Huberman (2000). Theresult of the research shows that the galie work culture has usually been inherited in thefamily and society for a period time; hence the galie work culture is also implementedwhile working in the local government organization of Pasaman Barat regency. Theresearch concluded that the galie work culture does not cause work culture that canharm others, but whenever the work culture exists, the civil servants would be annoyed.Civil servants who have this work culture tend to avoid risks and prefer simpler workthan their colleagues.Key words: work ethnict culture, galie, civil servant, Minangkabau ethict

Abstract

This paper discus the minimalism elements of scenography in selected plays by five writer/directors of Malay alternative theatre in Stor Teater DBP during 2003 and 2014. The plays selected from difference background of writer/directors in theatre such as Dinsman, Nam Ron, A Wahab Hamzah, Fasyali Fadzly, and Aloy Paradoks. This study uses illustrated case study method which is a descriptive case study that usually uses  one or two example events (in the context of this study is Malay alternative theatre) to explain the situation. A study of the play texts was made on five informants, the authors-directors of the ten staged performances at the Stor Teater DBP (Dewan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka), Kuala Lumpur from 2003 to 2014. The minimalism concept in the aspect of scenography is seen in line with the physical requirements found in the Stor Teater DBP as a small capacity space (black box). Hence, it makes artistic arrangements such as sets, lighting design and costumes primarily in a distinctive style as a form of Malay alternative theatre. Additionally, this paper also looks at the extent to which their design ideas can articulate artistic values and bring in any new theater elements in contemporary play in space and funding constraints.Keywords: Theatre, Minimalism, Scenography, Malay Alternative Theatre, Performing Arts KONSEP MINIMALISME DALAM ASPEK SINOGRAFI TEATER ALTERNATIF MELAYU DI STOR TEATER DBPAbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan membincangkan mengenai ciri-ciri konsep minimalisme yang dianalisis berdasarkan teater-teater alternatif Melayu terpilih yang dipentaskan di Stor Teater DBP pada tahun 2003 hingga 2013 iaitu di antara kewujudan panggung tersebut sebelum ditutup pada tahun 2014. Pementasan-pementasan teater terpilih diambil dari karya penulis/pengarah yang mempunyai latar belakang daripada pelbagai segi faktor umur, pendidikan dan pengalaman mereka dalam dunia teater seperti Dinsman, Nam Ron, A Wahab Hamzah, Fasyali Fadzly, dan Aloy Paradoks. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kajian kes ilustrasi iaitu kajian kes deskriptif yang biasanya menggunakan satu atau dua contoh peristiwa (dalam konteks kajian ini adalah teater alternatif Melayu) untuk menerangkan keadaan. Kajian terhadap teks persembahan dilakukan terhadap lima orang informan iaitu penulis-pengarah bagi sepuluh pementasan yang pernah dipersembahkan di Stor Teater Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Kuala Lumpur dari tahun 2003 hingga 2014. Hasil penyelidikan yang diperoleh bahawa konsep minimalisme dalam aspek sinografi dilihat sejajar dengan keperluan fizikal yang terdapat di Stor DBP sebagai sebuah panggung berkapasiti kecil yang dipanggil kotak hitam (black box).  Justeru, konsep tersebut menjadikan ia sebagai penataan artistik seperti set, pencahayaan dan kostum terutama berada dalam satu gaya yang tersendiri sebagai ciri-ciri sebuah bentuk teater alternatif Melayu. Selain itu, artikel ini juga melihat sejauh mana idea rekaan dalam keterbatasan ruang serta dana keuangan dapat mencetuskan nilai artistik dan sebarang unsur teaterikal baru dalam pementasan kontemporari.Kata kunci: Teater, Minimalisme, Sinografi, Teater Alternatif Melayu, Seni Persembahan
