Abstract

This paper examines the properties and objects of WTBOS, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. The method involves comparing the conditions of the properties and objects at the time of or after their nomination with their current state in 2024. Observations reveal that some WTBOS properties and objects remain well-preserved, serving purposes such as tourism, education, and functional use. However, some properties and objects are in disrepair, have not been maintained, or have even disappeared. Maintaining WTBOS properties and objects is essential to preserve their condition, including long-term utilization. The findings of this paper highlight the need for strategies and significant steps in WTBOS management, ensuring their inclusion in sustainable management and utilization practices.

Abstract

The Ombilin coal mine serves as an example of how natural resources can become a focal point of power struggles. This paper illustrates the dynamic movements among coal mine workers in Sawahlunto. Initially, the workers sought livelihood opportunities in the coal mines, while others were prisoners forced into labor by the colonial government. Over time, however, these mine workers transformed the site into a locus of nationalist movements, contributing to the broader history of Indonesia's journey toward independence. Thus, this paper provides a brief overview of how various locations and sites are interconnected through the broader discourses that developed during a particular period.

Abstract

The text discusses the trajectory of colonial modernity in two distinct "routes" connected to the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto (WTBOS). Both routes entered the historical stage due to the discovery of abundant coal deposits. The focal point is Ombilin-Sawahlunto, a once uninhabited and secluded valley in the heart of Sumatra’s wilderness, but one rich with black-gold reserves. To transport this resource to global markets, the Dutch colonial government initially planned to use an eastern route but eventually chose and developed the western route. These choices led to vastly different fates for the two paths in terms of modernity. The eastern route, heading towards the Malacca Strait via Kuantan-Indragiri, was abandoned and thus remained largely untouched by significant elements of modernity. In contrast, the approved western route, which connected Sawahlunto to the West Coast of Sumatra, catalyzed rapid development in the regions it traversed, ushering them into the vibrant embrace of modernity. This dynamic transformation brought growth, progress, and stability, which remain strikingly evident even after more than 150 years.

Abstract

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the face of Padang Panjang has changed. Initially, Padang Panjang was the only link between the Minangkabau hinterland and the west coast of Sumatra, since the discovery of black gold on the banks of Batang Lunto, changed the condition of Padang Panjang. This research is applied to the historical method, which consists of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Since the end of the 19th century - with the operation of the railway line - the Padang Panjang Onderafdeling has been the entry point for modernization, and ideology - from the west coast of Sumatra to the interior of Minangkabau. The impact of this is truly amazing. The existence of the railway has spurred the growth of private schools, ranging from Sumatra Thawalib, Dinijahschool, Rakjatschool, and Tablighschool. And, from the partisan schools carried the color of ideology, movement organizations, and the press that encouraged the growth of national awareness.

Abstract

As a mining city, Sawahlunto was shaped by a variety of cultures. The city developed through the presence of workers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Over time, these different cultures interacted with one another. Through this process, some cultures coexisted harmoniously, while others merged to form new expressions as a result of acculturation. The arts, language, and way of life that emerged reflect the cultural processes that occurred. The cultural identity of Sawahlunto as a mining town exemplifies how the culture of mining or industrial communities is formed. This hybrid and heterogeneous identity holds intriguing cultural values, making it an interesting subject for further study to uncover insights into the process of cultural formation.

Abstract

This paper serves as a preliminary note on the symptomatic relationship between the representation of the working class in several museums in Sawahlunto and the current condition of the working class in the same city. As an initial exploration, it aims to provide an early reflection on the absence of class consciousness in the narrative of the working class portrayed in these museums. At the same time, the present working-class community in Sawahlunto experiences life inequalities typical of their social class, yet this lived experience also indicates a lack of class consciousness. The parallel absence of this consciousness, both within the museums and in the broader community, warrants serious attention in future research. The inquiry should go beyond merely outlining the causal link between the two phenomena

Abstract

Based on a report by Van Lier (1917), it was written that the Sawahlunto community had utilized coal exposed to the surface as fuel for cooking long before the exploitation and exploration activities by the Dutch East Indies Government. The term used for the coal was charcoal tongue (daagzoom), and the community used boats on the Ombilin River to sell the commodity to the South of Sawahlunto. Based on historical records from PT Bukit Asam, an entity that was once the manager of the largest coal mine in Sawahlunto in the era of independence, the excavation and utilization of coal increased significantly after the discovery of coal reserves around the Ombilin River as much as 205 million tons by Willem Hendrik de Greve in 1867. The pioneering of mining was carried out by the Dutch East Indies Government in 1876 and began operating in 1891, with production records in 1892 of 48 thousand tons and peak production in 1995 of 1.2 million tons based on data from PT Bukit Asam. Of the many mining business permits (IUP) managed by several state-owned and private companies, several former mining areas have been appropriately reclaimed and become tourist areas. However, some former mining areas must be appropriately managed and have turned into critical land. On the other hand, several mining company assets are currently not being utilized, and the Ombilin Steam Power Plant (PLTU) is still operating using coal fuel. Is it possible to utilize critical former mining areas to plant energy crops whose harvests can be processed in such a way by a business unit into renewable fuel to be used as an alternative fuel, for example, by a power plant? By doing so, it is hoped that Sawahlunto, which has long been known as a fuel producer, can maintain its status as a Fuel Producer. This article will present this potential, including stakeholders who can be involved in realizing it.

Abstract

The existence of the Ombilin Sawahlunto coal mine not only generates economic income from mining operations but also produces socio-cultural impacts. The various effects can be seen in education, religion, arts, and regional infrastructure. This paper explores the influence of the Ombilin Sawahlunto coal mine, focusing on education and the traditional economy. The railway line connecting Padang to Sawahlunto is a means of mobility of knowledge and education, seen in the establishment of madrasahs and surau as religious education centers. Likewise, traditional markets provide commodities from various regions to be distributed to other areas. The mobility of knowledge and commodities influence the spread of multiple receptions and the formation of culture, which results from the interaction and mobility of society, goods, and discourse supported by the existence of the coal mine in Sawahlunto.

Abstract

The Minangkabau matrilineal system places women as owners of inherited land. In 1872, the Dutch colonial government began opening the Baro railway line from Sawahlunto to Teluk Bayur . This development process will involve land owned by women. This article begins with the question of how negotiations are carried out with women regarding their rights. The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method with a feminist perspective with the assumption that women were marginalized from history because their stories were considered unimportant. The results of the exploration of the views and imaginations remaining in women's minds show that men dominate (niniak mamak) over women in the negotiation room. This domination is possible because women represent their voices in negotiating and deciding matters to men in the hope that men will defend their interests. On the other hand, men were also faced with a new, more individual worldview introduced by the colonialists so that they could no longer uphold the interests of their people.
