Abstract

Many studies on the Covid-19 pandemic have explored various socio-cultural aspects related to this pandemic. Choosing a locus on Makean Island, this article focused on the responses of young villagers in Makean to the Covid-19 pandemic. The concept of response used in this article refers to the perspectives of environmental anthropology and psychological anthropology, namely the human response to external stimuli. In this context of study, we examined the responses of Makean Island youths to external stimuli, namely the COVID-19 pandemic and policies related to the pandemic. Using a combination of quantitative survey and qualitative ethnographic procedures, this study found several forms of responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The responses we found were mainly in the area of ??seeking information about this pandemic: the level of trust in the existence of Covid-19, the perception of the risk of contracting Covid for both oneself and community, and the responses to pandemic mitigation policies, especially related to Covid-19 vaccinations. Another important finding is that although many Makean youths consider Covid-19 as dangerous, and they are at risk of contracting it, most of them do not view vaccination as the best preventive measure and therefore plan to take other preventive measures. This can be interpreted as a form of soft resistance to government policies that require all citizens to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

The research was conducted using qualitative research methods and the data research techniques used included in-depth interview, observation and documentation. The subjects of study were selected using a purposive sampling technique with a total of 5 group members who were active and had joined the group for more than 2 years and 1 key informant, namely the village apparatus of Kayu Ara Permai. Social Capital contained in the group plays a role as an adhesive (Bonding) among members to foster high awareness, a sense of comfort, safety, shared responsibility, and gain good knowledge on how to increase group capacity, develop ecotourism and process the mangrove derivative products. The role of bridging (Bridging) encourages positive behavior, increases community participation, as well as funding and makes Ecotourism a village development priority. Finally, the role of liaison (Linking) is the establishment of cooperation with different strata to obtain funds from partners to build ecotourism facilities, increase group knowledge and promote ecotourism and process the mangrove derivative products produced by the group.

Abstract

The film Ngeri Ngeri Sedap highlights Batak culture with the conflict between Batak parents and their eldest son who wants to marry a woman from a Sundanese ethnic background. This research aims to look at the co-culture process that occurs between these cultures to analyze the phenomenon of marriage between dominant cultures in Indonesia, such as the Batak tribe. This research uses a content analysis method with a conventional content analysis approach by looking at the process of assimilation, accommodation, and separation between the Domu character and the Neni character. The findings of this research are that the character Neni carries out assertive assimilation to approach and adapt to Domu by manipulating stereotypes by carrying out a procession of giving the Batak surname before getting married using the Batak wedding process. Neni also accommodated her ability and communication skills with Pak Domu which was shown by using the nickname "Amangboru". An interesting finding was the aggressive separation of the Sarma couple, who in the end were told they did not continue the relationship and experienced rejection because of their Javanese background. The separation that was carried out showed that there was a firm action from the co-culture group against the dominant group in terms of marriage.

Abstract

The development of communication technology allows muted people to express themselves in the social environment. Women serving as wives and mothers are a category of group still negotiating with patriarchal values that silence them. This article highlights the behavior of women as wives and mothers who share experiences and create a support ecosystem through the mediation of online conversation platforms. Through the perspective of feminism and affect theory with digital ethnographic data collection methods on The Asian Parent Indonesia platform, this paper aims to understand women's bodily experiences as part of representative knowledge production. This paper argues that digital conversation platforms create alternative spaces for nurturing and care that are limited in offline spaces, while mediating the process of feeling collectively among women who experience the bodily experience of being a wife or mother. The intersection of women, body, and digital technology shows that personal bodily experiences can establish collective bonds through the mobilization of emotions mediated by digital technology. Conversing with fellow women virtually is an effort to find a safe space for women who are silenced in the process of nurturing and caring in offline spaces.

Large plantations did land acquisition successfully in various ways such as buying land, cooperation with traditional leaders, and land grabbing. The land grabbing results in various effects: people losing their land, displaced communities, poverty, no place to stand and farmer resistance. In conclusion, the expansion of oil palm plantations has generated various conflicts within community. The main sources of conflict are land grabbing and socio-economic inequality in the community. This then led to the farmer’s resistance against the rulers and entrepreneurs of oil palm plantations.
