Abstract

Postcolonial theory is used to examine the novel Back to the Village by Tri Budhi Sastrio. The novel Back to the Village is the story of an innocent village girl named Putu Larasati, a teenager who was snatched away by her youth, then stranded in the Dutch Company barracks and fell into the arms of a Company soldier named Captain Robert van Eyk. This village girl was lucky because the soldier, although at first was a soldier who was a jerk and a hooker, turned out to love her with all her heart and sincerity. The sincerity and loyalty of the soldier who had become her husband was well recorded in the mind of this innocent country girl. Everything becomes beautiful, calm, serene, and peaceful. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method using postcolonial theory. The data of this research are excerpts from the description of postcolonial theory in the novel "Back to the Village" by Tri Budhi Sastrio. The data source of this research is the novel "Back to the Village" by Tri Budhi Sastrio published by C.V Jejak Publisher publisher on Jln. Bojonggenteng Number 18, Kec. Bojonggenteng Kab. Sukabumi, West Java First printing December 2018, 188 pages, 14 x 20 cm. Data collection techniques used reading techniques and note-taking techniques. The data that has been obtained is then written on the data card. After the data that are in accordance with the research focus are collected, the data is then analyzed using the postcolonial theory of Edward Said's thinking: politics, culture, resistance. Analysis of postcolonial theory in the novel "Back to the Village" by Tri Budhi Sastrio is based on Edward Said's thoughts: politics, culture, resistance that the contents of the novel from a political point of view of the Dutch government colonizing Indonesia by utilizing Dutch stooges such as village heads and indigenous women including Putu Larasati figure became a shield for Dutch colonial politics. In the cultural field, indigenous people still maintain etiquette and manners in attitude and speech. This can be seen in the character Putu Larasati. In the field of Resistance, indigenous peoples continued to fight and defend their rights which had been colonized by the Dutch colonials. This is reflected in the character Putu Larasati who fights for her rights as a woman and maintains the dignity of her family.

Abstract

Having been colonized by Britain, Ireland was in a very deprived condition for a very long period, especially for poor Catholic Irish. Britain had destroyed Irish civil rights by forcing them in a massive potato plantation merely to fulfill British people’s need for food, which caused the Irish in a great famine and poverty. Written by an Irish playwright in 1980, which is set in agricultural land, northern side of Ireland, Brian Friel’s Translations illustrates clearly the suffering of Irish villagers in 19th century. By applying Homi K. Bhabha’s post-colonialism theory, the dialogues from the play are analyzed to explain Irish cultural identity conflict. This play is analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method. The result of analysis reflects the mimicry concept from Bhabha, in which it shows an ambition that Irish tradition must be vanished and replaced by British tradition. The dialogues in Brian Friel’s Translation describe that Irish language and tradition which tells a lot of Greek mythology must be replaced with the culture of Standard English language. The translations on Irish local place names into English language are forced for the sake of British imperialism importance in the Ordnance survey.

Abstract

Literature and tourism is a new approach that connects literature with tourism. This approach is very important given the close connection between a literary work and the setting of the place that is told in the work. With this linkage, literary works also contribute to the progress of tourism. If we look at the poetry of Pahlawan Kerja, there is literary tourism that reflects poetry and it’s strong relationship with the Cultural Heritage site, the Railway Monument and the Heroes Cemetery. Using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structural theory, H.R Soebrantas' poem Pahlawan Kerja is analyzed so that literary tourism that reflects history, culture, and religion is found.

Data analysis uses the equivalent method. From the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 17 inner conflicts experienced by the character So Won.  The 17 data are then grouped based on Maslow's multilevel needs theory, namely: (a) there are 3 physiological needs, (b) there are 4 data for security needs, (c) there are 3 data for belonging and love needs, (d)  there are 2 data for appreciation needs, and (e) there are 5 data for self-actualization needs.  The basic needs that are not met by the character So Won mostly occur due to circumstances and bad events that have befallen him.  This bad event causes the main character's inner conflict to arise.  So that their basic needs are not met.  This research is expected to be useful as a scientific treasure of inner conflict using a literary psychology approach.  In addition, as a reference for other authors for this type of research in the same direction.  The benefits of this research can also be taken and accepted by students, teachers, viewers, playwrights (screenplay), and other writers.

Abstract

The urgency for innovation in senior high school literature teaching materials has prompted this research. Historical novels with a psychological literary perspective are still rarely used as teaching materials. Hence, this research focuses on analyzing the characterization and conflicts in Aan Merdeka Permana's novel Perang Bubat as an alternative teaching material for senior high school literature. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, this research gathered data in the form of words and analyzed it using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The analyzed characters include Dyah Pitaloka, Hayam Wuruk, Gajah Mada, and Prabu Lingga Buana. The findings reveal unique character traits in the characters of Aan Merdeka Permana's novel Perang Bubat. These unique characteristics are classified into the id, ego, and superego. The research results were then transformed into senior high school literature teaching materials in the form of teaching modules and handouts. It is recommended that Aan Merdeka Permana's novel Perang Bubat be used as a teaching material for senior high school literature, particularly for grade XII, as an alternative to outdated teaching materials. The proposed teaching materials in this research are teaching modules and handouts designed to facilitate the understanding of the novel.

Abstract

This research investigates tradition, national identity, and cultural dynamics in Arswendo Atmowiloto's Dua Ibu using Stuart Hall's Cultural Studies approach. Qualitative research methods were used to analyze quotations describing aspects of culture and identity in the literary work. Substantial findings highlight the complexity of traditional values, generational value changes, and characters' internal conflicts that reflect cultural transformation in Javanese society. Stuart Hall's theory provides a strong framework for understanding how identity and culture are formed, maintained, and changed in the context of globalization. The relevance of these findings lies in the contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of Indonesian culture and national identity in the era of globalization. The implications of this research provide a basis for policy development that supports the preservation of culture and traditional values. Further research could involve comparative studies with other literary works or interdisciplinary approaches to explore the themes that emerge in this novel.
