Abstract

Deixis refers to the research of using spoken or written language to indicate or indicate something specific. This research aims to analyze the deixis used in a song by John Lennon entitled Imagine and to understand the meanings this deixis conveys. This research used a qualitative approach with content analysis. The analysis was performed using the Dexis theory proposed by Yule. The results show that there are three categories of deixis found in the data: personal, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. Among them, personal deixis is the most common, followed by spatial deixis, and temporal deixis is the least used. Moreover, data analysis shows that the person deixis plays a role in revealing by whom the sentence is uttered and to whom it refers. Spatial definitions are used to clarify sentences regarding word location and reference. On the other hand, temporal deixis is used to give timing and description of events. In conclusion, using deixis in song allows people to convey clear information about who is speaking, where the conversation occurs, and when it will occur.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the short story "All Hands" by John R. Platt through the lens of Wendy B. Faris's magic realism theory. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing Faris's theory of magic realism which is dissected using five characteristics: the irreducible element; the phenomenal world; unsettling doubts; merging realms; and the disruption of time, space, and identity. The results of this analysis reveal that "All Hands" utilizes a setting similar to the real world but incorporates elements that blur the line between reality and fiction, notably the protagonist's daily transformation of hands. This transformation defies natural laws since human hands do not change, yet it is accepted as reality by the characters in the story. Each hand possesses distinct characteristics and identities, symbolizing the diverse nature of human traits.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the motivation of the main character, Tom Sawyer, as depicted in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, written by Mark Twain in 1876 and first published in 1884 by The American Publishing Company. The theory used in this research is the motivation theory by Ryan and Deci, which classifies motivation into two categories, extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. The method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative method, which is suitable for literary analysis as it involves examining and describing written texts or documents using the theory of motivation. Every individual has different dreams and needs, and this is reflected in the various motivations shown by Tom Sawyer in the novel. Based on the analysis, it is found that Tom Sawyer's actions and behaviors are driven by intrinsic motivation, such as adventure and curiosity, pleasure and entertainment, and the desire to test boundaries, as well as extrinsic motivation, including recognition and praise, love and acceptance, avoidance of punishment, and social status. Both types of motivation are rooted in the fulfillment of basic needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Abstract

This research discusses the gender gap in the movie Gadis Kretek episode 1 where women are implied as second divine beings. In this study, the character Jeng Yah experiences this discrimination. This research methodology uses descriptive qualitative research method using Charles S. Pierce semiotic analysis and gender approach. The text features three scenes depicting a woman's struggle in public, lack of confidence in public, and a caged bird. The first scene shows a woman smoking at a banquet, and the second scene shows a closed blue door, emphasizing restraint and limitation. The third scene depicts a bird in a cage, symbolizing powerlessness and cultural limitations. This article analyses the film Gadis Kretek using semiotic analysis and gender and feminist analysis. It shows how cigarettes are associated with men and masculinity, and how women are discriminated against in the public sphere. The film encourages women to think of themselves as secondary and shows how sexism prevents women from achieving them.
