Abstract

ABSTRACT. The increasing use of online loan applications each year has led to a rise in the number of online loan borrowers. Based on data from the OJK in April 2025, the number of loan recipient accounts reached around 153.1 million. The increasing number of borrowershas also led to an increase in the number of online loan cases that have a negative impact on the psychological condition of borrowers. One factor affecting the psychological condition of borrowers in online loan cases is the use of harsh words or dysphemisms in collectionmethods. Dysphemism refers to the use of harsh words intended to insult, curse, or belittle. The use of harsh words towards borrowers by debt collectors will certainly have an impact on the psychological condition of borrowers, which is the background of this study. Usingqualitative and semi-quantitative research methods as well as sociopragmatic analysis, this study aims to analyze various forms of dysphemism directed at borrowers. In addition, there are also psychological effects such as anxiety disorders, stress, depression, and suicidal tendencies. There are also social dysfunction and physical effects such as chest tightness, headaches, and increased stomach acid. Keywords: online loans, dysphemism, psychology, harsh words, sociopragmatic.

Abstract

This study examines how multimodal discourse in Instagram advertisements constructs representations of global veiled women within Indonesia’s contemporary modest fashion industry. Using Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) multimodal discourse analysis framework, the research analyzes three Instagram video advertisements from the Buttonscarves x Indah Nada Puspita collaboration. The analysis focuses on three semiotic dimensions: linguistic features (song lyrics and written text), visual-verbal interplay (composition, color, setting, and body language), and the representational strategies of the global veiled women. Findings reveal that these advertisements construct Muslim womanhood at the intersection of religious piety, global consumerism, and local cultural identity, operating within what scholars term the “piety economy” where religious expression and commodity consumption are mutually reinforcing. The advertisements employ neo-colonial perspective by situating Indonesian Muslim women within Western cultural settings and musical frameworks, yet simultaneously demonstrate cultural hybridization whereby veiled women assert their right to participate in transnational flows of fashion, romance, and tourism without sacrificing religious authenticity. The study also finds that the three advertisements collectively challenge Western stereotypes while constructing normative standards of middle-class, urban, educated Muslim femininity. This research contributes to understanding how commercially social media participates in negotiating Muslim identity, gender representation, and globalization in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines Stranger Things 4 (ST4) as a case of how contemporary serial television manufactures presence from inherited signs. Using a Derridean framework—trace, supplement, hauntology, and iterability—it analyses four binaries (past/present, child/adult, real/monster, original/homage) and shows how each is destabilized through scenes, sounds, and props. Methodologically, the study combines deconstructive close reading with intertextual mapping, sound–image alignment, and motif tracking across episodes and paratexts. Sources include transcripts, promotional materials, and repeated viewings. Analytic steps comprise open coding of binary markers, axial clustering around Derridean mechanisms, and synthetic memoing checked against scholarship. Findings indicate that the ‘1980s’ functions as a trace that pre-organizes the present; that youth action supplements, and thereby exposes, adult authority; that reality appears haunted by what communities refuse to narrate; and that originality emerges from iterated citation rather than pure origin. Across these domains, analog devices and music do not merely decorate narrative time; they compose it, converting memory into method and fear into coordination. The thesis contributes to popular culture studies by showing how deconstruction operates as an analytic of production not a negation of meaning. It also offers a matrix for reading other nostalgia-led series and for understanding audience practices that transform homage into infrastructure. The study argues that ST4 advances an ethic of responsible repetition: reading traces, accepting supplements, listening to specters, and reshaping inheritances into forms that sustain attention, care, and sense.

Abstract

A sentence consists of a deep and surface structure that each structure could contain different propositions in which it is used to transfer meanings to the addressee. This study examines the syntactic structure of a song lyric entitled Not Like Us, which was sung by Kendrick Lamar, to analyse the meanings conveyed in the sentences expressed with ungrammatically accepted structure. This research is conducted using a qualitative method where sentences in every line of the lyrics are analysed in terms of the presence and absence of the to-be verb. This study aims to categorize the use of to-be verb in the song Not Like Us and find the implied meaning found in sentences with both the syntactic presence and absence of the to-be verb. This research argues that the absence of the to-be verb is a communicative way to convey a particular meaning, rather than being considered an ungrammatically accepted structure. The result of this study concludes that word arrangement in song lyrics conveys meanings differently depending on the use of English grammar and syntactically unaccepted grammar.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationship between Bangka (BB) and Palembang (BP) languages through cognate analysis using lexicostatistics and glottochronology methods. The research data consists of 200 basic Swadesh vocabulary items analysed based on similarity of form, vowel and consonant correspondence, and phonological changes. The results of the study showed that 64 cognate words were found, with a percentage of relatedness of 32%, which confirms that the two languages belong to the same family, although they are not closely related. Analisis korespondensi bunyi memperlihatkan pola perubahan fonologis yang sistematis, di mana BB cenderung mengalami lebih banyak inovasi fonologis ketimbang BP yang bersifat lebih konservatif. Through glottochronological calculations, it is estimated that BB and BP diverged around 2,714 years ago, with a margin of error of ±225 years. These findings suggest that linguistic divergence occurred gradually and was influenced by geographical, social and cultural factors.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyze how Boygroup's gender performativity strategy works in the arena of hegemonic masculinity culture. XLOV, as a Boygroup that emerged in the current era of popular culture, has attempted to deconstruct the roles and identities of traditional masculinity norms towards a new form of performative masculinity. Using the concept of new masculinity combined with gender performativity theory, the researcher found that XLOV's gender performativity strategy is evident in their clothing styles, choreographed movements, and other symbolism that appears in their music videos. The implication of this research is that consumers of popular culture can educate themselves about gender roles and identities, which are increasingly fluid, especially amid the rapid growth of popular culture.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. This analysis interprets Abdul Hadi W.M.’s poem “Meditasi” through Cathy Caruth’s trauma framework, emphasizing the influence of latency and deferred awareness on the subject’s religious turmoil. The approach utilized is a meticulous analysis of “Meditasi” to examine diction, corporeal imagery, ritualistic repetition, transitions between sacred regions, and alterations in the stance of the lyrical “Aku” The results indicate that the sacred experience is simultaneously captivating and detrimental: physical chill, the fatigue of traversing hallowed sites, and the incessant knocking from door to door signify the resurgence of an experience that never achieves a cohesive comprehension. Repetitions of devotion are interpreted as indicators of intrusive memory, but the desert picture highlights a survival mechanism when doctrine fails to offer guidance. The political aspect culminates when God is shown as possessing an increasingly restricted sense of nationality, making universalism a contentious arena of representation. The concluding aporia, expressed through a sequence of inquiries regarding God’s name, origin, ethnicity, and religion, serves as an ethical rejection of sacred possession. This study introduces the notion of traumatized spirituality to elucidate how the poetry embraces wounds without resolving them through theological certitude. Its significance is in delineating the connection between trauma, Sufism, and religious nationalism in contemporary Indonesian poetry, while illustrating that Caruth’s paradigm may be contextualized within local texts without diminishing the cultural contexts being examined.

Abstract

This study explores how Indonesian queer linguistic knowledge becomes visible and preserved through digital platforms by focusing on a single TikTok video uploaded by Debby Sahertian on 7 July 2021. Known for documenting queer slang (bahasa gay/bahasa gaul) in the late 1990s, Sahertian’s presence on TikTok represents a shift from earlier print-based documentation toward platform-mediated, audiovisual forms of linguistic knowledge production. Drawing on queer sociolinguistics, digital archiving studies, and platform theory, this research conceptualizes TikTok as an informal, community driven archive where marginalized linguistic practices can be demonstrated, interpreted, and transmitted across generations. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative content analysis of the selected video, examining queer technolectal utterances, their lexical and phonetic features, and the metalinguistic explanations provided by Sahertian. These explanations function not merely as translations but as pedagogical and archival strategies that make in-group language intelligible while maintaining its social markedness. The video’s sustained engagement, evidenced by millions of views and ongoing viewer interaction several years after its publication, suggests that it continues to operate as an active and accessible digital artifact. The findings show that Sahertian’s digital practices perform multiple intersecting functions: documenting queer linguistic creativity, facilitating intergenerational knowledge transmission, and countering the historical exclusion of queer voices from formal linguistic and cultural archives. At the same time, TikTok’s algorithmic visibility remains ambivalent, simultaneously expanding access to queer linguistic knowledge while exposing it to surveillance and commodification. Overall, this study argues that digital platforms play an important role in shaping how Indonesia’s queer linguistic past is remembered, negotiated, and carried forward.

Abstract

This study is titled “Nail Polish as a Symbol of Women’s Social Lifestyle in the Dutch East Indies, 1920–1942.” It aims to explain the development of nail polish usage and the social meanings attached to this aesthetic practice within colonial society in the Dutch East Indies. The focus of the study is directed at how nail polish evolved from a mere body care practice into a symbol of modernity, social status, and women’s identity within the colonial social structure. This research employs a socio-cultural historical approach by applying Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Social Distinction to analyze how cosmetic consumption practices function as markers of social class. The method used is the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics (source collection), verification (internal and external source criticism), interpretation, and historiography. The research sources include cosmetic advertisements, articles from colonial women’s magazines, Dutch-language newspapers, and visual documentation from colonial archives. The findings indicate that the use of nail polish in the Dutch East Indies developed gradually. In the early 20th century, nail care was primarily understood as part of women’s hygiene and bodily neatness. Entering the 1920s, the emergence of imported products such as Cutex marked the introduction of nail polish as a modern beauty commodity associated with Western lifestyles. In the 1930s, the use of nail polish became increasingly popular through advertisements, print media, and colonial consumption spaces, eventually becoming a symbol of urban women’s modernity. However, access to these products was not evenly distributed. Elite European, Indo-European, and educated indigenous women had greater access to imported cosmetics, while middle- and lower-class women adapted nail aesthetic practices using local materials such as henna leaves. This study concludes that nail polish functioned not only as a cosmetic product but also as a reflection of the dynamics of modernity, social class stratification, and the negotiation of women’s identities in the Dutch East Indies during the period 1920–1942.
