Abstract

This research explore explores the representation of cultural value orientations in the film The Architecture of Love using Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s theoretical framework. The research focuses on five key dimensions of cultural values: human nature, man-nature, time, activity, and relational orientations. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes selected scenes and dialogues from the film to identify implicit and explicit cultural meanings. The findings reveal that the film portrays human nature as dynamic and emotionally complex, emphasizing individual capacity for healing and growth. The relationship between human and nature is shown through symbolic interactions with urban architecture, suggesting a harmonious coexistence with the environment. The man-nature orientation is reflected in the characters’ symbolic relationship with urban architecture as a living space imbued with memory, emotion, and personal transformation, suggesting a harmonious interaction between human experiences and the built environment. Time orientation is reflected through characters’ struggles with past trauma and their efforts to reconstruct the future. Activity orientation emerges as a transformation from emotional passivity to active engagement with life. Most prominently, relational orientation is manifested through strong social bonds, where emotional recovery is facilitated by familial and communal support. These values are represented not as isolated traits, but as interrelated dimensions embedded in character development and narrative progression. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how cultural ideologies are constructed and conveyed through cinematic narratives, offering insights into the intersection of culture, emotion, and identity in contemporary film.

Abstract

This study aims to show the transformation of the Gothic genre from Frankenstein’s novel to the Neo-Gothic genre in Lisa Frankenstein’s film and to reveal the underlying motives. This qualitative research uses Linda Hutcheon and O’Flynn’s Adaptation theory and is supported by Nick Lacey’s Image and Representation analysis technique. The data are narrative events from the Frankenstein novel in the form of words, phrases, and paragraphs, as well as narrative events in Lisa Frankenstein’s film in the form of screenshots containing frames per scene, dialogue, sound, backsound music, and film shooting techniques. The collected data is analyzed comparatively between the narration in the novel and the film, by reading images and representation analysis techniques in Lacey’s Barthesian semiotics perspective, and discursively as proposed by Linda Hutcheon in the theory of adaptation. The results of the study show that the Lisa Frankenstein film adaptation turns into a feminine style of the creation through the playfulness of the dark comedy narration of Lisa’s domestic skills in reviving the crature. The dark comedy is in line with romantic and sexual relationships between Lisa and the creature, which shows the transformation of genre from gothic novel into neo-gothic film. The transformations shown in the film are influenced by the director’s agency as an adapter and the involvement of various parties, such as Hollywood, which aims to provide novelty to maintain audience interest and maximize the sales profit.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract The use of the veil for Indonesian Muslim women was not very popular until the end of the 20th century. Apart from Islamic da'wah that has not been progressive, the New Order government's policy of restricting its use, especially in public schools through Decree No. 052 of 1982 is also one of the reasons. This ban was actually the beginning of the revival of Islam in the New Order era which had an impact on increasing awareness of wearing the veil in Indonesia. One way to see how changes in the use of the veil are reflected in society is through Islamic films produced during the New Order era. This article aims to analyze the representation of the use of the veil in three Islamic films—Al-Kautsar (1977), Titian Serambut Dibelah Tujuh (1982), and Nada and Da'wah (1991)—to understand the changes in the veiling style of Indonesian Muslim women during this period. Through film analysis, this article shows how the veil serves as a symbol of religion and identity, as well as how political and social influences affect that representation. The method used in this study is the historical method, including heuristic, source criticism, interpretation, historiography. The results of the study show that the change in the style of the hijab depicted in the film reflects the social, political, and increased consumption of Islam that occurred in Indonesia, from restrictions at the beginning of the New Order to the rise of Islamic consciousness in the late 1980s and 1990s.Keywords: Veil; New Order; Islamic films; Indonesia

Abstract

This research discusses Zauner’s journey of identity as a second-generation Korean American diaspora living in America. She wants to negotiate her Korean identity in a dominant society using Korean cuisine as the ultimate gateway. The data for this research were taken from a memoir titled Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner, analyzed using Stuart Hall’s Cultural Identity theory, specifically the concepts of being, becoming, and positioning, to clarify how Zauner’s identity journey unfolded. This research aims to reveal the construction of diaspora cultural identity through cultural negotiation, utilizing Korean cuisine as a primary tool to explore cultural heritage. The results of this research indicate that Zauner’s identity is not static but dynamic instead, representing her complex life journey. Before deciding to negotiate her Korean identity, Zauner experienced many things in America, including discrimination that once made her ashamed of her Korean heritage. As she matured, she realized that Korean cuisine was not merely a means of sustenance but a tool for navigating Korean culture within American society. Thus, it becomes evident how the writing in this memoir constructs a framework that reveals the author’s purpose in writing the memoir or the author’s position. There is a construction of soft power diplomacy in her memoir, emphasizing detailed descriptions of cooking methods, serving, and Korean cuisine.

Abstract

Although literary works are seen as fictional products, discourses about the reality of life are not completely absent. Armed with the creativity of language, writers often use historical facts as the basis of storytelling in their works, which are then referred to as fabula. Martin Aleida in his short story entitled "Surat Nurlan Daulay Kepada Junjungan Jiwanya" also uses historical facts as the basis for fabula in storytelling.Through a qualitative method with a close reading technique and note-taking approached combining with a Russian formalism study, this study aims to reveal historical facts of the 1965 Tragedy used by Martin Aleida in the short story of "Surat Nurlan Daulay Kepada Junjungan Jiwanya". The results of the study indicate that there are five historical facts related to the 1965 Tragedy trilogy according to Adam (2004) in the short story, including the Gerakan 30 September, the suppression of the PKI, Gerwani's black propaganda and violence against female political prisoners, Operasi Kalong, and the exile of political prisoners during the New Order on Buru Island. These five historical facts are defamiliarized and then processed into syuzhet in the narrative elements of the story.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the Sedulur Sikep community preserves its traditional clothing as part of efforts to preserve local culture amid the tide of modernization. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature study and visual observation methods and descriptive interpretive data analysis. Stuart Hall's theory of representation is used to understand how cultural identity is formed and communicated through clothing symbols, while Clifford Geertz's concept of culture as a system of meaning is used to reveal how the Sedulur Sikep community's clothing practices are part of the construction of social values passed down through generations. The research findings indicate that the traditional attire of the Sedulur Sikep community not only serves as a visual identifier of identity but also carries philosophical meanings related to simplicity, equality, and respect for ancestors. Efforts to preserve traditional Samin clothing include wearing it during important events such as community gatherings, weddings, and other cultural activities. Preservation efforts also involve transmitting values to younger generations and through local government policies that support the use of local cultural symbols in formal settings.
