<![CDATA[The concept of autonomous learning has gained massive attention in educational research and practice over the last three decades. This concept is regarded as an option in this modern educational world (Scharle & Szabo, 2000) which demands more active participation and less teacher- dependence of learners. In the area of language learning, many researchers have put attention to this concept in order to get more understanding of the theory and practice. Two approaches are commonly used by researchers in this autonomous learning matter are qualitative and quantitative. These two approaches are discussed in this paper in order to get good comparison of advantages and weaknesses to be used for research in autonomous learning area. A mix approach or a combination approach between qualitative and quantitative is also discussed in this paper to get more ideas and understanding about the alternative way of conducting the research in this area.]]>

<![CDATA[Internet use for promoting students’ autonomy in language learning has been a great phenomenon to discuss. Many researches have been conducted about this issue. Now the tendency is pointed out specifically for improving students’ competency in speaking. Speaking is normally learned in the classroom setting in which learners have interlocutor as their speaking partner and under direct supervision from the lecturer. The discussion bellow will concern about some internet links that can be used for speaking study. The learners can study by using these internet links independently and record their own voice and video for their own self- assessment. They choose their own target and links to access and determine their own learning target. In the meantime, they also collect the recording to their teacher for assessment purpose.]]>

<![CDATA[Speaking skill is one of important elements in English. The teacher can see the process of students in studying English by seeing their speaking skill. The purpose of this research is to find out whether debating activities can better improve the students’ speaking skill. This reseach was conducted at the third year students of STIKes YPAK Padang. This research used action research. The researcher collected data from test, observation and interview. It was found that the students’ speaking skill by using debating activities could better improve than before the research was conducted. The researcher found that the average score of the pre test was 48,1. The everage score in the first cycle was 51,4. So, the result score from pre test to cycle 1 was a little improvement. Then the everage score in the second cycle was 70,3. In the second cycle there was good improvement in speaking. In short, debating activities could improvement the students’ speaking skill at the third year students of STIKes YPAK Padang.]]>

<![CDATA[Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat apakah dengan penggunaan portofolio kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mamahami Grammar dapat meningkat. Hipotesis yang diajukan pada penelitian ekperiment ini adalah penggunaan portofolio oleh mahasiswa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam memahami English Grammar. Portofolio itu sendiri adalah kumpulan hasil karya siswa yang bermanfaat dan dapat mempresentasikan usaha, kemajuan dan prestasi siswa dalam satu atau lebih wilayah kurikulum (Paulson, Paulson dan Meyer, 2003). Penelitian ini juga dilatarbelakangi oleh penelitian sebelumnya yang telah dikakukan oleh penliti sendiri tentang pemanfaatan portofolio untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menerjemah mahasiswa di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Politeknik Negeri Padang. Penelitian tersebut membuktikan bahwa telah terjadi peningkatan kemampuan dalam penerjemahan pada kelompok eksperimen setelah menggunakan portofolio pada mata kuliah Theory and Practice of Translation 2. Semua data yang sudah terkumpul diolah dengan uji t menggunakan program SPSS. Berdasarkan hasil pengolahan data terdapat perubahan yang signifikan antara pre test dan post test pada kelompok eksperimen dimana mahasiswa tersebut mendapatkan tindakan berupa pemberian portofolio yang harus mereka isi dengan materi yangberhubungan dengan mata kuliah Grammar II. Namun demikian, hasil pre test dan post test yang didapat oleh partisipan pada kelompok kontrol juga meningkat secara signifikan walaupun mereka tidak mendapat tindakan yang sama dengan kelas eksperimen.]]>

<![CDATA[This research is aim for finding and describing the language skill of tourism actor in Simanindo sub-district which reflected on the results of using language in public by using linguistic landscape approach or known as LL. The research method which used in this research is descriptive and qualitative method. Basically, qualitative method observe the use of language on LL, review the form and meaning of language morphology and multilingual morphological situation as an international tourist area. In this research we observed that the use of language in all public spaces included street names, welcome greetings, directions, tourism business signs and so on and provided questionnaires for tourism actors regarding language skills. By using qualitative method, Data obtained will be fuller, deeper, trustworthy and meaningful so that the research objectives can be achieved. The findings of the research: language morphology dominated by the form of words and phrases. In the linguistic situation the most dominant form of bilingual are mixing between the use of Indonesian and English. The meaning of the language contained in LL in Simanindo District is oriented to denotative and connotative meaning. Somewhat rare idiomatic meaning for dominant use of language in the LL is informative. The language skills of tour operators are generally still lacking. This is evident from the morphology of words, phrases, clauses and sentences in Indonesian and English by not applying the rules of writing and good translation. There is a difference between the use of LL made by the government and private institutions. LL by the government has uniformity at the linguistic and non-linguistic level while the independent tourism actors tend to produce the original language according to the wishes of each local community. This becomes significant with the language as the first component encountered by tourists in the tourist area. Language will determine whether the tourists will linger or leave the area immediately. Recommendation: (1) It should be a good linguistic planning of the use of language in the LL in Simanindo. (2) The need to reduce the language awareness of tourism. (3) It should be cooperation between the relevant institutions to provide training and counseling language in favor of language skills (language competence) tourism actors.]]>

<![CDATA[Learning mathematics should be able to improve the abilityand creativity in learning mathematics, especially in solving mathematical problems. To improve theability of anappropriate learning need sand learning mathematical problem submissionis in accordance with the needs of students in facilitating the completion of (solution) of the mathematical problem significantly. To obtain data submission capability math problem students, the research for mulated the problemas follows: (a) How does the ability filing math problems before and after the learning seen from the stage before and during problem solving?,(b) How is the level of complexity of the questions asked of students according to the structure of language and mathematical relationships?, (c) how associations filing capability math problems with the ability of the settlement (solving) the mathematical problem?.To answer this problem conducted experimental research on mathematics semester students majoringin STKIP "Tapanuli Selatan" Padangsidimpuan. Results showed that (a) the ability of the student submission mathematical problemsseen from the stage before and during the settlement of problems inproblem-based learningis quite good, as shown by the large percentage of math questions that can be solved either with new information and without any new information. (b) Differences filing capabilities grade math problems and problem-based learning class conventional learningis significant. (c) the ability filing math problems with the ability of the settlement (solving) the strong association of students of mathematics problems.]]>

<![CDATA[Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat kesalahan-kesalahan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan adjective clause. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian descriptif yang dilaksanakan di kelas Writing I Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI SUMBAR. Yang terdiri dari 39 orang mahasiswa. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes menulis paragraph descriptive . Kemudian semua data dianalisa dengan analisa deskriptif untuk mengetahui kesalahan-kesalahan dalam menggunakan adjective clause pada menulis paragraph deskriptif,. Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kesalahan yang dominan muncul dalam menulis adalah pada penggunaan adjective clause sebagai pengganti subjek dan objek dari kata kerja.]]>
