Abstract

The effectiveness of using language in a brochure is not something that easy to interpret. Information and understanding must be clear and concrete. A good and correct brochure from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective is objectivity that can be understood in terms of appropriate content. The application of SFL in daily activities may simplify the meaning of text sentences so that people could decipher the meaning carefully and minimize misunderstanding the meaning of the related texts. The research was intended to: (1) identify and analyze a transitivity system in the tourism destination brochure of Dinas Kebudayaan, Kepemudaan Olahraga dan Pariwisata Kabupaten Sumenep (2) find out the dominance of the process type in the ideational metafunction in the language used in the brochure. This research was supported by the theory of Halliday and Matthiessen (2004). This study used a qualitative description to develop a research index in terms of analyzing, describing, and agglomerating the existing brochure at the Gili Labak tourism destination, Sumenep, Madura. The results found that transitivity systems have a role to make meanings in a clause and the relational process was the dominant type of process involved in the brochures. This research is expected to be a reference for further research by discussing Systemic Functional Linguistics thus it becomes the data that has solutions for the application of language that parses through processes in ideational metafunction.

Abstract

The tourism sector now is seen as a promising sector to increase the nation's foreign exchange revenues. Therefore, a strategic effort such as providing special English language training for tourism employees in order to attract more tourists is needed. However, to produce a research program that can have a major impact on the participants, a needs analysis related to the desired outcomes has to be employed. This study aimed at finding and describing the needs of tourism employees for English language skills. Identification of difficulties during the interaction process in the field is also the focus of research so that it can be used as input in designing training programs. This research is quantitative research with survey research methods. A questionnaire with open and close-ended questions was given to 22 tourism employees at and around Gili Labak Island. The data were analyzed with mathematical computation to obtain the frequency, percentage, and mean scores. The results showed that the most important skills to be mastered by the tourism employee was listening skill (m= 4,5), followed by speaking (m=4,4), writing (m=4,1), and reading (m=3,9) respectively. In terms of problems faced by the tourism employee, they revealed that speaking skill was the most skill that experienced frequent errors during the interaction, then followed by listening, reading, and writing.

Abstract

Bangkalan is one of the preferred tourist destinations in East Java because of its culture and culinary diversity. However, discussions about culinary are inseparable from culture. To raise public awareness of the cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan halal culinary, an analysis related to culture and culinary has to be carried on. This research aimed to analyze the semiotic and philosophical meaning of Bangkalan's halal culinary (Tajin Sobih, Nasi Serpang, and Topak Ladeh), which represents the cultural identity of Bangkalan people. This research is qualitative descriptive with a semiotic analysis approach of Charles Peirce's triadic model to analyze the visual composition of food. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out by processing signs and symbols in words into meaningful information. From the result analysis, it can be affirmed that each culinary has a variety of meanings that represent the value of community unity, prosperity, friendship, togetherness, and cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan people. The strengths of the three culinary arts are in the form of historical content, philosophical values, and religious beliefs so that they can foster public interest in visiting Bangkalan.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate students’ attitudes in writing descriptive text using Internet memes as a writing medium and the reasons leading to the particular attitude that occurred. This qualitative descriptive research was conducted using purposive sampling to a class that consists of 13 fourth semester students of the English Language Education study program at Universitas Tanjungpura in Essay Writing course. There are two types of data collected in this research; they are primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained from the semantic differential questionnaire and the semi-structured interview, which was conducted to five of the students, whereas the secondary data were acquired from students’ writing scores of the Internet memes descriptive writing task. The findings reported that students have a positive attitude towards the task of writing descriptive text using Internet memes. Factors that influenced their positive attitude are the sense of enjoyment and casual feeling from the task, the sense of freedom and relatedness from their chosen memes, and the visual aid from the pictures that helps illustrate better description and helps them understand how to describe better in words. From the result, it is clear that the Internet memes pictures are helpful to boost their attitudes in writing descriptive text. It is suggested that by using fun writing media, such as Internet memes, writing teachers can put students in a comfortable learning atmosphere, so that they can absorb other important learning materials better.

Abstract

The ability to use English to communicate is strongly needed in this era; therefore, learning English has now become a requirement for all students worldwide. Many strategies have been used in the process of learning English; one of them is by implementing collaborative learning. The purpose of this research is to identify EFL students’ attitudes to learning English by using collaborative learning. This study obtained the data from a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale and open-ended questions to determine students' attitudes when participating in collaborative learning activities. The results show that the students have positive attitudes toward learning English by using collaborative learning. The students believe that collaborative learning can improve comprehension, increase motivation, cooperation, and confidence, as well as communication skill. Even though they face some challenges such as different views among students and longer time in completing tasks, students can accomplish tasks better than when working alone. Thus, it is suggested that the lecturers build strategies to improve the implementation of collaborative learning in the EFL learning activities to ensure that the learning is organised more effectively.
