Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a growing global health problem. Long-term treatment for metabolic syndrome causes side effects. Therefore, the use of nutraceuticals could also be considered. This study analyzed the effect of the administration of striped catfish oil and turmeric extract on tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in metabolic syndrome rats. Metabolic syndrome was induced in rats by administration of high fat fructose diet (HFFD) containing 3 g pork fat (15%), 2 g duck egg yolk (10%), 15 g standard diet (75%), and 2 ml fructose (1%). Thirty rats were randomized into five groups: C1 (normal control group), C2 (metabolic syndrome control group without treatment), P1 (striped catfish oil at 0.08 ml/200 g BW/day), P2 (turmeric extract at 5.04 mg/kg BW/day), P3 (combination of striped catfish oil at 0.08 ml/200 gBW/day and turmeric extract at 5.04 mg/kg BW/day). There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in TNF-α levels and HOMA-IR in treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) compared to C2. The P3 group had the lowest TNF-α levels. Treatment groups had the same potential effect in reducing HOMA-IR. Striped catfish oil, turmeric extract, and their combination reduce inflammation and insulin resistance in metabolic syndrome rats.

Abstract

Nutrition literacy (NL) is an indicator of food consumption nutrition status, and the prevalence of overweight among high school students is increasing. Thus, there is a need for an analysis of nutrition literacy and other factors relevant to overweight, comparing differences based on biological sex and gender to prevent and reduce the risk of overweight among high school students. In this cross-sectional study. Boys represented 63.5% and girls 36.5% of the total. The prevalence of overweight in high school students was found to be 35.1% of all cases. The incidence of overweight was higher in high school student boys at 67.1%. The age range of boy and girl students was found a median of 17.50 years (16.30–18.80). NL was associated with overweight; the main NL protective factors in boys were knowledge of nutrition principles (AOR=0.03; 95% CI: 0.002–0.618; p=0.022), interactive nutritional literacy (INL) (AOR=0.17; 95% CI: 0.03–0.82; p=0.027), and critical nutrition literacy (CNL) (AOR=0.03; 95% CI: 0.003–0.327; p=0.004). The main NL protective factors in girls were INL (AOR=0.20; 95% CI: 0.05–0.71; p=0.013) and CNL (AOR=0.27; 95% CI: 0.08–0.95; p=0.043), after controlling for potential confounding variables. Therefore, gender-specific public health strategies are required to prevent overweight.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research examined the effects of self-management support program on knowledge, exercise and eating behaviors, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference among overweight employees in an industry in Samutprakarn Province, Thailand. Seventy overweight employees aged 20-59 years were equally randomly allocated into either the treatment or control group. Thirty-five overweight employees were in each group. In the 16 weeks, the treatment group was intervened through a selfmanagement support program, while the control group received standard care. Research tools consisted of two parts: a self-management support program and questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests. The results after 16 weeks of the self-management program showed that its average scores of knowledges, exercise, and eating behavior were higher than the baseline and control group (p<.05) while scores of waist circumferences and BMI were lower than the baseline (p<.05). The findings of this study indicated that the self-management support program had outcomes that not only could improve knowledge, exercise and eating behavior, but also reduce BMI and waist circumference. It is suggested that the self-management support program should be applied in the organization to promote knowledge and modify the health behaviors of overweight employees in other industries.

Abstract

Palliative care improves the quality of life for patients with severe diseases like breast cancer. The objective of this study was to describe the variation of age of breast cancer patients (484 in total) who accessed palliative care in Albania in the last 10 years (2014 to 2023). Information on patient age, breast cancer incidence, hospitalization and mortality rates, and breast cancer screening was collected. Descriptive statistics and t-test for unpaired samples to compare the means of age in the study period were used. The average age of patients gradually increased from 2014 to 2019, showing fluctuations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed an increasing trend in 2023. Breast cancer incidence remained stable at approximately 37 cases per 100,000 annually, with significant increases in hospitalization and screening rates over the study period. In conclusion, the gradual increase in the age of breast cancer patients seeking palliative care in Tirana, Albania during the past decade, coupled with slight decrease of mortality rates, stable incidence and increase of hospitalization might be indicators of success of related health policies in Albania, including better diagnostic and treatment strategies, improved treatment efficacy and disease management, ultimately increasing the resilience and adaptability of the healthcare system.

Abstract

Electronic waste disposal is a primary concern both on a national and global spectrum. The increased usage of information and communication technology and electronic devices among higher education institutions (HEIs) contributes to the annual generation of e-waste. HEIs are called to implement a sustainable scheme to curtail the environmental and public health threats brought by e-waste. Against this background, the recycling strategies of HEIs for discarded electronics were examined and evaluated as to its effectiveness and used as basis to develop policy recommendations for e-waste management. The interventions developed were met with general approval and positive response. The innovative products were perceived to be useful in serving their new purposes and reducing the problems of e-waste in HEIs. These findings provide valuable input for HEIs seeking to enhance their e-waste recycling practices. Existing legislation concerning e-waste was looked into, and policy recommendations that encouraged cooperation and shared accountability among key players and stakeholders were drawn up.

Abstract

As commonly seen in East and Southeast Asia, one of the major responses of the Vietnamese government to substance abuse is compulsory drug rehabilitation, which was found not very effective with a high relapse rate. Since 2000s, many people affected by substance abuse (PASA) in Vietnam started actively seeking help from group models in Buddhist temples for their substance abuse and HIV/AIDS problems. This case study aimed to examine the philosophical foundation, theoretical mechanism, implementation, and tentative outcomes of the group work model with the PASA at a Buddhist temple in the North of Vietnam. This qualitative approach study collected data from participation observation, reports collected from the temple, and 14 in-depth interviews with two monks, two rehabilitation therapists, and 10 PASA, mostly narcotic addicts, who participated in the group model in the temple. Results of the study show that PASA were self-motivated to voluntarily participate and maintain their membership in the group model. The head monk/master and his fellow monks played the role of the para-interventionists to provide comprehensive care for PASA members using Buddhist core values and philosophy in its approach. Both the para-interventionists and group members perceived their relationship with each other as equal, respectful, supportive, and therapeutic. The results provide implications for the development of new intervention models that are culturally appropriate in the unique sociocultural context of Vietnam and other countries that shared similar religious influences.

Abstract

Adolescent smokers in Indonesia remain a problem that impacts educational output. This study aimed to examine the determinants of cigarette consumption among school-age adolescents. The study employed a cross-sectional design in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The study collected data from January 2022 to July 2023. The total sample in this study consisted of 819 adolescents from junior high and senior high schools (SHS). Among all respondents, 438 adolescents (53.5%) reported smoking >10 stems/day. The binary logistic regression results revealed that significant variables associated with cigarette consumption included males aged 14 to 16, who drank alcohol more than three times a week, consumed more than three liters of alcohol a week, had low parental education levels, had peer influence, were exposed to social media, had parents who smoked, and had experienced parental divorce. The collaboration between stakeholders at the school level and parents, such as counseling and supervision intensive, can prevent adolescent smoking behavior.

Abstract

The problem of anemia among adolescent girl in Indonesia is still very high. Many factors cause anemia in adolescent girl. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anemia and its determinants in Banggai district. The research design was cross-sectional, with a sample of adolescent girls aged 12–18 years (n=326). Hemoglobin concentration was measured using a Hemocue hemoglobinometer. The Chi-square test and linear regression analysis were used for data analysis. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia was 48.8%, of which 44.0% had mild anemia and 48.4% had moderate anemia. From the bivariate analysis, anemia was significantly related to adolescent age, father's education, and eating habits (p<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression shows that the factors that most influence the occurrence of anemia are age OR=1.7 (95% CI OR=0.20-0.05) and eating habits OR=2.2 (95% CI OR=0.29-0.81). It was concluded that the prevalence of anemia was high in adolescent girls. Intervention steps are needed to improve the anemia status of adolescent girls in Banggai district.

Abstract

Oral ivermectin may be a cheaper and more convenient alternative to topical permethrin for classic scabies but its acceptability among physicians in the Philippines is underexplored. This qualitative study aimed to investigate physicians’ experiences and perceptions regarding oral ivermectin, alone or in combination with permethrin, and only permethrin in the treatment of classic scabies. We interviewed 15 purposively sampled Filipino physicians: nine have prescribed only permethrin, one has prescribed either oral ivermectin or permethrin alone, and five have prescribed all three regimens for scabies. Interview data were analyzed and thematically organized using the theoretical framework of acceptability (TFA). Our findings reveal mixed awareness and experience with ivermectin among Filipino physicians: while most were generally confident in permethrin as the standard care, combination therapy was reserved as a last resort. These insights highlight the need for ongoing education, clearer guidelines, and further research to improve the efficacy and accessibility of scabies treatments while addressing physicians' varying perceptions and self-efficacy in alternative treatments.
