Abstract

The movie Before, Now & Then (2022) raises the theme of Nana's life history as she breaks away from patriarchal hegemony through women's perspectives. Inspired by director Kamila Andini's anxiety about the role of women in movies, she invites the audience to experience the story from a woman's perspective. This study aims to analyze the voice of women's freedom from the female gaze through the movie Before, Now & Then (2022) using Baudrillrad's simulacra method and a postcolonial perspective. This approach seeks to uncover the colonialism practices behind the movie as a superstructure of power, providing a basis for analyzing the movie. The main female character is portrayed as someone who speaks little but takes decisive action to liberate herself from patriarchy by using women's language and point of view. The movie’s storyline focuses more on the life story of Nana to escape from the patriarchal restraints inherent in people's lives, especially since the movie's storyline was in the post-ideological war West Java in 1960. The study concludes that this movie can depict women’s perspectives through its characterization and storyline.

Abstract

Live streaming commerce is the most up-to-date promotional tool connecting sellers and buyers. Social Bread utilizes this phenomenon as an institution that provides services for businesses to optimize product sales through the live-stream commerce method. Social Bread is a medium that bridges the buying and selling process. Much research on similar topics has been conducted, especially from China and the United States. However, little has been done in Indonesia, even though Indonesian businesses and society widely use this feature. This research aims to determine how live-streaming commerce is implemented and how the institution implementing live-streaming commerce becomes a communication medium for conveying messages to the audience. This research uses a qualitative case study methodology through interview techniques with the CEO, VP Operations, and Streamer from Social Bread. As a result, live streaming commerce embodies the Communicator – Medium – Communicator communication process, namely the business represented by the Streamer as the Communicator, an online shopping platform with live streaming features mediated by Social Bread as the medium, and the audience as the Communicant. The process of preparing live-stream commerce on Social Bread starts from implementing the client's brief by the Streamer to get the predicted results: increasing sales from live streaming. The consumers' cognitive responses previously in the audience are recorded, and a report is made to be presented to the client as evaluation material.

Abstract

This study endeavors to ascertain the challenges and opportunities in democracy literacy to foster active youth engagement in the digital media age. Through the implementation of Focus Group Discussions and participatory workshops involving a cohort of 17 participants, comprising eight student journalists and nine non-student journalists, who are poised to exercise their voting rights for the first time during the forthcoming 2024 elections, the research outcomes divulge that disparities exist in the democratic perspectives of student and non-student journalists, primarily due to their contrasting experiences. Nevertheless, both groups concur that a solid understanding of democratic principles empowers them to partake in the democratic process. In the digital media era context, four notable challenges emerge in democratic literacy: hoax oasis, politician stigmatization, idiot discussion engagement, and political apathy engagement. Conversely, two prospective avenues for bolstering democratic literacy are identified: information oasis and reigniting youth participation. These identified challenges and opportunities serve as fundamental pillars for formulating effective democratic literacy strategies in the digital era, thereby fostering increased participation of young voters in democratic practices.

Abstract

Indonesia faces significant pressure from deforestation, climate change, and globalization, which exacerbate environmental vulnerabilities and threaten societal sustainability. An inclusive approach based on green policy is needed to integrate environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and strategic communication in addressing the complex challenges of global environmental threats. This study aims to analyze national green policy strategies in response to global environmental threats, focusing on three main aspects: (1) analyzing the impact of globalization on the environment, including changes in communication patterns in addressing environmental challenges; (2) examining the role of government communication in developing and implementing strategies to combat global warming; and (3) identifying the failures of international environmental regulations in addressing global issues and their impact on national security. This case study employs a qualitative method, involving the Indonesian Defense University and the Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency, with a total of 10 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data collection for this research was conducted through observation and documentation. The findings reveal that globalization significantly affects the environment through the exploitation of natural resources by multinational corporations and changes in communication patterns, which require the government to leverage digital technology to counter disinformation and enhance environmental awareness. Government communication plays a strategic role in formulating policies and mobilizing society to address global warming. Meanwhile, the failure of international regulations exacerbates the impact of climate change, increasing national security threats through resource conflicts and climate-induced migration. The effectiveness of national green policies depends on the integration of communication strategies, cultural value protection, and cross-sectoral coordination to holistically address global environmental challenges. This study provides an original contribution by combining local cultural approaches and national security strategies in green policy, an aspect that has been largely overlooked in previous research.

Abstract

The nomination of female incumbent regional heads has not escaped public scrutiny and judgment on digital media ahead of the 2024 regional head elections. Analyzing public emotions through sentiment analysis and capturing mass opinions via social media is an interesting phenomenon, especially considering the persistent gender challenges and barriers in Indonesian politics. This research aims to explore how the public responds to the leadership of a currently serving female leader who will run for re-election in the 2024 period and whether the emotions that arise are related to performance, gender, or a combination of both. The research method used is social network analysis to analyze key actors with text analysis from social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and online news. In data collection, the researchers used the website https://esuit.dev/, as well as two software programs, Gephi and Orange, to conduct metric analysis and text analysis of comments from social media. We conducted this research on the regional heads of Blitar Regency, Nganjuk Regency, and Lumajang Regency in East Java Province, Indonesia. This study found that performance factors, understanding of gender issues, and social stereotypes attached to female leaders influence public emotions towards incumbent female leaders. While successful policies and sustained leadership drive significant support, negative sentiments related to traditional gender norms also emerge. These findings illustrate that although incumbent female leaders can gain appreciation for their performance, they also face challenges in overcoming gender biases associated with their work. The implications of this research provide important insights into the dynamics of public emotions in the 2024 regional elections and the significance of political education that can help reduce gender bias in Indonesia's local elections.

Abstract

Current technological developments also play a role in the birth of new crimes in the world, call it cybercrime. This study discusses cybercrime: fraud on behalf of Customs within the scope of persuasion communication and mediated communication from perpetrators to their victims and seen through the theory of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and Elaboration Likelihood Model, and also saw the campaign "beware of fraud on behalf of Customs" carried out by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DGCE). This research uses a qualitative approach by studying documentation related to fraud on behalf of Customs and interviewing several primary sources involved in handling the case. In addition to looking at the communication strategies implemented by the DGCE, this study will also show the development of communication patterns in the process of deception shown through the phases of impersonal, interpersonal, and hyperpersonal communication. The results of the analysis also showed that persuasion efforts emerged by fraudsters by directing their victims through peripheral routes, resulting in changes in attitude (deceived) and finally give some money to the perpetrator. Furthermore, if the peripheral route is not enough to deceive the victim, the fraudster switches to using the central route to persuade the victim through aspects of motivation, ability, and strong argumentation. This research aims to prevent people from falling victim to fraud. Addressing this issue will require cooperation from all parties, including the government, law enforcement, and the public.

Abstract

Children in conflict with the law face significant challenges in reintegrating into society, often struggling with stigmatization and a lack of supportive environments. From a postmodern family communication perspective, understanding the dynamics of family relationships and their role in fostering acceptance and growth is crucial for successful social reintegration. This study employed a qualitative approach to understand family communication strategies in supporting the social reintegration of children facing legal issues in Nunukan Regency. The research was conducted in February 2024 at the Department of Social Empowerment for Women and Child Protection. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with parents and Social Department staff, complemented by observation and documentation. The data analysis process involved data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity testing through triangulation. The findings revealed that family communication strategies are crucial in the social reintegration process of children. Open, supportive, and responsive communication from the family helps create a supportive environment during legal proceedings. Key elements in these strategies include awareness of the child's emotional needs, active participation of all family members, clear role and responsibility assignments, and consistent moral and practical support. The synergy between family communication and relevant stakeholders plays a vital role in shaping a better future for these children. Despite challenges, supportive factors strengthen the family’s role as the primary agent in the social reintegration of children facing legal issues. Families play a significant role through supportive communication, providing the emotional and practical support needed for successful reintegration.
