Abstract

In the beginning, media was established as an integral part of public sphere. As the world changed, media turned to be commercialized as commodity by mass distribution operation. Media was also sold to advertisers which use media facilities to reach their customers. This turnover had moved media more and more far away from the ideal of public sphere. It amounted when contents of media were dominated by less educated and less morality program. In order to implement public broadcasting media, an effort to create public sphere was badly needed. One of such effort was  transformation of TVRI status to Public   Broadcasting Organization by UU No. 32/Th. 2002. But, in reality, the operationalization of TVRI as Public TV still face some obstacles. This paper examines several regulation barriers facedby TVRI that prevent an ideal public sphere.

Abstract

People assume that cancer is a deadly disease. The communication gap between physicians and their patients results in incomplete information obtained by people with cancer. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach in order to explore the meaning of cancer within Bandung Cancer Society. Theories used as references are phenomenology and symbolic interactionism. The results of the study of 10 informants indicated that cancer is a very frightening disease; cannot be cured and results in no hope of survival; cancer is caused by unhealthy life style; and yet cancer increases acts of worship. All informants as cancer survivors made efforts to survive by following the doctor’s advice. Another result of this study states that communication that takes place between cancer survivors and other people with cancer within the Bandung Cancer Society has managed to change the view of cancer, motivate and raise the spirit of life.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the meaning of the use of hijab to the beauty of women’s hair contained in Sunsilk Clean And Fresh product ads on television using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis model. This research uses qualitative approach with descriptive method of analysis, and constructivist paradigm. Data collection techniques used were observations by observing Sunsilk Clean And Fresh advertisements, interviews with related informants, and documentation. The results of this study found that ad in Shampo Sunsilk Clean and Fresh products describes the comfort and freshness of a woman’s hair that uses hijab throughout the day by performing a dense activity. The meaning contained in this ad corresponds to Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic model. Then, the use of veils from advertising ultimately leads to controversy in a person, society and social environment. The meaning of hijab as a Muslim identity is utilized in advertising as a commercial medium that obscures the purpose of the hijab user themselves.
