The objectives of this research are to find out the types of errors and the most dominant error of using gerunds (as a subject of a sentence, as an object of preposition or after pr eposition, as a direct object of certain verbs, after a special expression and as a passive form) by the sixth semesterstudents of English Education Study Program of UNIB in the academic year of 2017/2018. The sample of this research consisted of 77 students. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The result of the analysis shows that the students made errors in all five types of gerunds. There were 27.1% (809) errors of using gerund as direct object of certain verbs, 24.5% (735) errors of using gerund as passive form, 20.8% (624) errors of using gerund after special expression, 15.5% (463) errors of using gerund as object of preposition or after preposition, 12.1% (361) errors of using gerund as subject of a sentence. Evidently, the most dominant errors made by the students of using gerund were the gerunds as direct object of certain verbs.

This quasi-experimental research was aimed to find out the effect of STAD technique toward students’ speaking skill and class participation at grade XI of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu in academic year of 2011/2012. The population of this research was the students at grade XI of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu in academic year of 2010/2011 that consisted of 168 students. The sample of this research was IPA 4 which comprised 27 students and IPA 5 which comprised 27 students and the two classes were cluster randomly selected as a research sample. The data were collected through speaking test and observation sheet of class participation. The data were then analyzed by using t-test and analysis of variances. The findings of this research showed that (1) the students who were taught by using STAD technique gave significant effect toward their speaking skill achievement. (2) The students who were taught by using STAD technique gave significant effect toward their class participation. (3) The students who were taught by using STAD technique gave significant effect toward students’ speaking skill and class participation. Thus, it can be concluded that STAD technique gave significant effect toward students’ speaking skill and class participation at grade XI of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu in academic year of 2011/2012.

This research is aimed to find metadiscourse form and metadiscourse category which are dominantly used in the undergraduate thesis introduction written by English Department students of Bengkulu University. The documentation technique and checklist are used in this research. Fifteen undergraduate thesis introductions by English Department students were analyzed by using mix method quantitative and qualitative, along with descriptive approach. From the result it was found that English Department students dominantly used interactive metadiscourse markers category and transition metadiscourse markers form in their writing. However, English Department students used of metadiscourse markers were still limited to the use of and, or, also but metadiscourse markers.

This research aimed to know the effect of using metacognitive strategy towards student’s reading comprehension. The design was quasi-experimental. The sample consists of 69 students in two classes. The instrument consists of reading test which was tried out. The treatment for the experiment group was metacognitive strategy and for the control group was the strategy that the teacher use in the class. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The activity in the classroom during six meetings, two meetings for pre-test and post-test and four meetings for teaching in the classroom. The data was analyzed by The Wilcoxon Test and The Mann-Whitney Test. The Wilcoxon Test for the control group showed that there was no significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The Wilcoxon test for the experiment group showed that there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The Mann-Whitney test for pre-test showed that there was no significant difference between experiment and control class. The Mann-Whitney test for post-test showed that there was significant difference between experiment and control class. Finding of the research showed that, there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test for the experiment class and there was significant differece between experiment and control class for post-test result. This result indicated that there was an effect of metacognitive strategy towards student’s reading comprehension.

This research was aimed at finding out the errors of English speaking syllable stress by the students of English Education Study Program, University of Bengkulu. The subject of this study was 19 students with highest GPA and speaking and Phonetic phonology score or both of them of English Program. The method of data collection was recorded. The data were collected by recording their pronunciation in reading words stress and Audacity program to analysze the data. The result of this research showed that English Students pronunced syllable words stress in the first syllable and second syllable with average predicate and 2 stresses in a word with low predicate. Meanwhile, this research also found that a lot of students put the stress on the first syllable.

This Research Entitled “An Analysis Of Direct And Indirect Speech Acts Performed By Main Character In The Movie Revenant Script”. This research was a descriptive analysis that discusses direct and indirect speech acts in movie script entitled ‘The Revenant.’ In analyzing the script, there was used theory by Yule (1996).The data in this research based on main characters’ utterances. The purpose of this analysis was to find out the types, and functions of speech act whether it is direct speech act or indirect speech act in the movie script entitled ‘The Revenant.’ From the analysis, it was found that both direct speech acts and indirect speech acts are used by main characters in this movie. The most dominant type of speech act used in the movie script was direct speech act (13 utterances) and then followed by indirect speech act (9 utterances). The direct speech act was classified again into declarative type (2 utterances) imperative type (5 utterances) and interrogative type (6 utterances). Indirect speech acts were also classified again into declarative type (8 utterances) and Interrogative (1 utterance). For the functions, direct speech acts are classified into the statement (2 utterances), order/request (5 utterances), and the last function of the question (6 utterances). Indirect speech act also classified into question (9 utterances), and no functions of statement and order. Based on the result, the researcher found that Felicity Conditions and genre were the factors affected main characters in producing direct speech acts more than indirect speech acts.

This research aimed at finding the rhetorical of narrative section based on Labov’s model and the stand-up comedy techniques which dominantly used by Jim Jefferies, Ricky Gervais, and Bill Burr on their performances. The observation checklist was used in this research. Fifteen different topics performance from each stand-up comedian were analyzed by using descriptive method, using quantitative as well as qualitative data. From the result it was found that three stand-up comedians used narrative section suggested by Labov. The narrative section is abstract, orientation, complicating actions, resolution, and coda. Also, the most frequent techniques used by three stand-up comedians are rule of three and one liner technique. Those techniques are the most effective technique that can trigger audience laughter. The last finding of this research, there are two common patterns created by three stand-up comedians based on Labov’s model of narrative sections.

The aims of this research were to find out vocabulary learning strategies applied by the students of English Education Study Program of Bengkulu University and also the most and the least frequently applied strategies. This research was designed as a descriptive quantitative. The population was 343 students of English Education Study Program of Bengkulu University. The sample of this research was 86 students chosen randomly from the population. The instrument was questionnaire adapted from Schmitt’s Vocabulary Learning Strategies Taxonomy (1997). The result of this study showed that the students applied the six groups of vocabulary learning strategies. However, the mean score of overall strategies indicated that the students applied the strategies in the frequency of “Sometimes”. Moreover, Determination strategy was the most frequently applied by the students, followed by Metacognitive strategy, Cognitive Strategy, Memory strategy, Social (Discovery) strategy, and Social (Consolidation) as the least frequently applied by the students. It can be concluded that the students of English Education Study Program preferred to learn and deal with new word individually to ask people’s helps.

The objective of this research was to investigate whether there was an effect of the implementation of Pair Rehearsal Technique toward students’ speaking participation. The research was designed as pre-experimental research by using pre-treatment and post-treatment group. The research was conducted at the eleventh IPA grade of SMA Negeri 06 Kota Bengkulu. Random sampling was a technique to take the class. The data were collected through an observation checklist which was adapted from Boyd et al (2007), Vandrick (2000), Teacher Handbook of the National University of Singapore, (NUS, 2009) in Abuid (2014). The result of this research showed a positive effect on students’ speaking participation in verbal and non-verbal participation in the post-treatment rather than in pre-treatment. Nevertheless, students were tended to participate in non-verbal participation.

This research aimed to know the students’ perceptions of morale in “Alice through the looking glass” movie and the influence of morale toward English Students Fourth Semester Class A of Bengkulu University. This research was a Descriptive Quantitative research. In this research, the researcher used questionnaire and interview as the instrument. In the questionnaire the researcher used close-ended and open-ended question. The result showed that the students have good perception about the morale that contained in the movie. That is why there were compatibility between the student’s answer and the researcher analysis. There were 15 morales that the researcher and the students have found. Furthermore, there were some influences of morale to the students such as, students could build a good character, attitude, behavior, and social behavior from it and be able to distinguish what is right and what is wrong.
