Abstract

This research is aiming at giving a contribution to the lecturers’ knowledge on the design materials in using social media Facebook in teaching writing process to English Department students. Before conducted the developing module for Facebook-based writing instructional course, we surveyed and explored the student’s need. The stages of this research consisted of need analysis and document analysis. We conducted needs analysis to 141 English students and 2 lecturers of writing. Data were collected using need analysis questionnaire and interview. The analyzed documents in this research were lesson plan, syllabus and the existing textbooks. The data from questionnaire and interview were analyzed in quantitative and qualitative methods. The results concluded that: first, needs analysis is the basic of developing module for Facebook-based writing instructional course, in order that the material can be related to the students’ needs, levels and lecturers’ perception. The result of students need found urgent to develop module for facebook-based writing instructional course through the following criteria of interactive, self-contained, user friendly, online supporting, online social media, authentic, environmentally friendly, formal and informal environments, online evaluation, presented in visual  aids, support  and facilitate the students’  academic and non-academic writing activities, topics of the materials should be interesting which provides a cultural background of students, the materials should be implemented by applying vocabulary, reading texts, grammar and basic skills in writing process, implemented in beginner level (Writing 1), used in class and out- class and the materials globally/ international context. Second, the lecturers’ desires in teaching writing are to improve the students’ skill to comprehend the materials. Third, the existing materials are unsuitable for the students, they prefer learning facilitated by electronic social media, Facebook, so they will more motivate in write.

Abstract

Unlike for lecturers in Engineering, Medicine, Computer Science, and Agriculture and Biology Sciences, for Indonesian lecturers in Social Sciences and Humanities including in Linguistics and Language Education (LLE), publishing research articles in reputable or indexed international journals is very difficult. The possible cause of the difficulty is their unfamiliarity with the correct and appropriate use of rhetorical style in their articles as expected by international journal readers. This study is aimed at investigating the rhetorical of research article (RA) drafts written in English by Indonesian lecturers in Applied Linguistic and English Language Education in five different universities in Indonesia (i.e., Bengkulu University, Padang State University, Atmajaya Catholic University, Mataram University, and Makassar State University). A corpus of 20 English RA drafts was analyzed on their rhetorical and linguistic quality using a genre-based method. The results show that the majority of the RA drafts have addressed important moves in each section of the articles but in terms of the argument quality still needs improvement. This implies that the Indonesian university lecturers in LLE need to be familiar with and able to argue well in their article drafts as it is expected by international readers.

Abstract

An argument in academic writing is an essential element; it is used to convince readers that the writer’s opinion or claim can be acceptable. However, this may be problematic for university students or new writers especially when writing in a language other than their first language such as Indonesians who take an international English writing test. The aim of this study is to identify and describe the rhetorical features of successful academic IELTS essays. Sixty academic essays were taken from six different common topics with band scores 8-9 (high quality essays) and were analyzed on elements of argument following Toulmin (1979). The results show that: a) the common sections found in the essays are lead in, thesis statement and deduction; b) the common elements of argument in the essays are claim, data and warrant; and c) the common types of argument structures of the essays are simple argument structure and strong argument structure. This implies that the essay sections, argument elements and argument structure can be used to describe the quality features of IELTS essay organization. It is suggested that in order to be able to write good quality essays in English, test takers must have a good command of essay sections, argument elements and argument structure type of good quality essays

Abstract

Interactive metadiscourse markers in the discussion section of a journal play a crucial role in engaging the reader and facilitating a more dynamic interaction. In a discussion journal section, interactive metadiscourse markers may include phrases or expressions that invite the reader to consider alternative viewpoints, respond to the presented ideas, or reflect on the implications of the research findings. This research investigated interactive metadiscourse markers in research article discussion of language teaching within 30 articles published in local, national, and international journals. A mixed-methods approach was adopted and the instrument used in this research was a checklist designed to analyze interactive metadiscourse. The result of the inter-rater agreement of the co-rater and researcher indicated a kappa value of  90.2% (co-rater and researcher respectively) because it shows excellent agreement (above 80%). It shows that the highest frequency used of interactive metadiscourse category is transitions markers in the three-level journals. Evidential markers took the second position in frequency used followed by code glossed in third frequency. Endophoric markers and frame markers are less used by the writers in the article discussions. The research articles published in international reputable journals show the highest number of using interactive metadiscourse devices than the articles published in local and national journals.

Abstract

Abstract: Teacher professionalism has become a very important topic for teachers in Indonesia including in Bengkulu since all teachers have been and will be certificated to be competent and professional teachers; however, they may still have various different perception on the topic. The purpose of this study is to know the perception of certificated teachers on professional teachers and how they should behave in and outside the school. The data of this study were obtained through a set of questionnaire distributed to 80 already certificated teachers. The results show that the majority of teachers still have different opinion on professional teachers and how they should behave in and outside the school. This implies that the certification intensive program is not effective enough to unify the teacher?s view on teacher?s professionalism. It is suggested that although they have been certificated, teachers must be introduced to characteristics of professional teachers and how to be professional teachers.

Abstract

The quality of argument in the discussion section determines the quality of a journal article because in this section authors must argue convincingly so that readers may accept and use their new knowledge claim. This study aims to determine the differences in argument strategies and linguistic realizations in the discussion sections of unaccredited local, accredited national, and reputable international journals in English by Indonesian writers in the field of Language Teaching. The research method used was descriptive qualitative and quantitative research methods (mixed-method) in analyzing differences in argument styles and linguistic features of the discussion sections of the journal articles. Sixty articles were analyzed using the genre-based text analysis method following Swales (1990) and Dudley Evan (1994). The results show that the argument strategies of articles in local, national, and international journals have important differences. The main differences are the discussion sections in the international journals are much longer in word count and use much more references than the local and national journals do. Also, unlike international journal articles, the majority of local journals use an incomplete argument strategy while national journal articles use a semicomplete argument strategy. Yet another difference is that international journal authors tend to use non-integral citations more frequently while local and national journal authors prefer using integral citation types. The similarity among the three journal articles is that the majority of the authors tend to use present tense and past tense in their discussion section rather than present perfect tense and future tense. Keywords: argument strategy, Research article, comparative rhetorical  study

Abstract

The journal article (henceforth JA) title is regarded as an advertisement to promote the content of the research article to potential readers. The authors must write and organize their titles to be attractive by paying attention to the syntactic features of titles. This research aims at investing the average length, syntactic features, and the differences of JA titles in Applied Linguistics at different Sinta scores. The method used in this research was a mixed-method with an exploratory sequential design. 120 JA titles were included as corpora of this research taken from six journals at different Sinta scores. The analyses of data were conducted following Cheng et al. (2012)’s framework on the syntactic features, while the analysis of the average length of JA titles by counting the parts of speech of the titles. The results show that the average length of JA titles was in the range of 10.5 to 13.55 words. Moreover, there are three types of syntactic features of JA titles found in this research, namely nominal structure, compound structure, and Verb-Ing phrases. Furthermore, all groups of journals in applied linguistics at different Sinta scores tended to have the same average length and syntactic features of JA titles. The findings of this research give useful significance for Indonesian authors in applied linguistics especially new or novice authors should learn and use the common syntactic features of JA titles when writing an article in English to be submitted to reputable international journals.

Abstract

Abstract Research conducted by researchers was related to Lexical Cohesion (repetition, synonym, superordinate, general word, and collocation). The purposes of this research were (1) to find out the comparison of lexical cohesion between BBC News and The Jakarta Post News; (2) to find out the type of lexical cohesion between BBC News and Jakarta Post; and (3) to find out the dominant use of lexical cohesion in BBC News and The Jakarta Post News. Descriptive qualitative was used in this study, while the source of the data was taken from news texts written by BBC News and The Jakarta Post News, totaling 20 news about the Qatar 2022 world cup football, consisting of 10 news texts from BBC News and 10 news texts from The Jakarta Post. To analyze the data, the researchers used the Halliday and Hassan’s theory. The results found that for Lexical Cohesion for BBC News, there were 214 repetitions, 0 synonyms, 0 superordinate, 2 general words, and 33 collocations. So, the total Lexical Cohesion is 249. While for The Jakarta Post News, it was found 429 repetitions, 9 synonyms, 0 superordinate, 20 general words, and 25 collocations. So, the total of lexical cohesions found is 483. From the comparison of the data above, The Jakarta Post News has more types of Lexical Cohesion namely 483, compared to BBC News which only found 249 types of Lexical Cohesion. The dominant type of Lexical Cohesion in this research is the type of repetition.

Abstract

Native speakerism is an ideology in which people believe that real and correct English comes from the people who were born in Europe and use English as their mother tongue. This point of view may have an impact on "native speakers" and "foreign speakers"' professional life in English language teaching (ELT), particularly in Indonesia. This research aims to know how this ideology affects the Indonesian EFL students' perceptions of "native-speaker" and "non-native speaker" that refer to the educators. A quantitative descriptive method was chosen for this research to find out the perception of EFL University students in the context of TEFL. The population and sample of the research were the students from English Education Department at a State University. Based on the result, showed that students' judgments tended to be more persuasive when they claimed that competent English teachers also qualified as "native speakers" who possess adequate mastery of the language. However, although the majority of students believe that "native speakers" are the best teachers, they do not believe that their "non-native" instructors are ineffective because, on occasion, they are more knowledgeable about crucial English concepts like grammar than "native speakers."

Abstract

Many academics have studied niche establishment tactics in journal articles, but none have studied two or more sets of journal articles in language studies. This study identifies how Scopus and Sinta English Language Teaching journal authors niche their research paper abstracts and introductions. Niche Establishment techniques in Sinta and Scopus-indexed journals were examined using qualitative and quantitative methods. This analysis used 100 Scopus- and Sinta-indexed research articles. From randomly selected journals' newest issues, research article parts were extracted. Most authors in the two sets of research publications define a niche in the introduction, but few do in the abstracts. Scopus-index journals use Strategy 2 (insufficient research) and Strategy 5 (suggesting solutions) the most, while Sinta-indexed journals use Strategy 2 and Strategy 1. For rookie authors and postgraduate students, this study proposes niche establishment tactics in research paper abstracts or introductions to improve writing.
