Abstract

Various technologies have been used in making teaching and learning sessions more effective, fun, and enjoyable. One of the ways to make teaching and learning interactive is by emphasizing the use of mobile augmented reality (MAR). Thus, this study has proposed using MAR for a chemistry subject, namely science exploration (SCIENEX). This study adopted design and development research (DDR) by employing the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. The phases involved in DDR are ADDIE. SCIENEX was evaluated based on its validity, usability, and effectiveness. Five experts validated SCIENEX after it had been completely developed. The samples for usability testing and effectiveness of SCIENEX were 30 secondary school students who were studying chemistry. The results of the evaluation of the experts’ validation revealed that SCIENEX is a valid and appropriate MAR application for the learning of topics in chemistry. The result also revealed that the majority of students strongly agreed that SCIENEX is appropriate for the usage of MAR in learning chemistry, as it is fun, easy to use, and helps students to understand their learning. Interestingly, SCIENEX could increase students’ performance in their learning (t=21.754; p=0.000). Thus, it can be concluded that SCIENEX is valid, can be used for learning chemistry, and can help students in their learning. The limitations of this study and future suggestions for research are also discussed.

Abstract

The use of technology can increase teacher innovation in carrying out mass learning. Innovations that can standardize in terms of media use or digital supporting devices that reduce the learning barrier and help students succeed. One of the components of multimedia-based learning media is the Nearpod application. This research aims to ascertain the purpose and behavior of primary school pupils utilizing the Nearpod application via an extension of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT 2) model. The researchers employed a quantitative research method by distributing questionnaires to 217 students at Public Elementary School (SDN) 004 Tanjung Redeb, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data from this study were analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings revealed that behavioral intention (BI) is significantly positively influenced by hedonic motivation (HM), habit (H), and habitual behavior (HB). In addition, habit (H) also has a significant positive effect on use behavior (UB). It can conclude this study can explain that the adoption of technology in the elementary school environment has different causal factors.

Abstract

This study investigates the association between the personality traits of academic staff members and their job performance in a Malaysian private educational institution. The personality traits were based on the Big Five model, which has five dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. About 110 participants from this institution were surveyed using a quantitative questionnaire, and their data were gathered. Throughout the study, the data were examined utilizing multiple regression analysis and factor analysis. According to the study’s findings, conscientiousness, and openness to experience significantly positively affect job performance. However, it was determined that extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism were not statistically significant and had no connection to job performance. As a result, in this institution, openness to experience is the most essential predictor of job performance. The findings of this study showed the management that openness to experience and conscientiousness are crucial for improving job performance inside the institution. Therefore, the management should pay more attention to these areas and recruit new employees with openness to experience and conscientious personality traits.

Abstract

Word problems continue to be a challenge for students today. All students must meet the prerequisites for problem solving and reasoning skills, which are important components of the critical thinking component of 21st century skills. This study is being conducted to assess students’ strategies for solving word problems with numbers, consecutives, and ages. The Rasch model is used to analyze the item difficulty level of word problems and students’ strategies for solving ten-word problems at various levels of item difficulty in a similar trait. Then, Pearson correlation analysis is used to investigate the item difficulty level in relation to linguistic, algebraic, and arithmetic factors of word problems before evaluating students’ performance on solving these word problems using various strategies. Rasch model found these algebraic word-problem questions are slightly harder for year 8 Malaysian students in relative to an international standard. Meanwhile, the item difficulty of word problems is driven by linguistic and algebra factors where students can score accurately if the word problems contained explicit information. However, the students encountered difficulties while losing their solution strategy when the questions contained implicit data that demanded critical thinking ability.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine learning outcomes and discuss the effect of the combination of memorization and small group discussion methods on students’ achievement and communication skills. A quantitative method was applied in this study with a quasi-experimental design. The subject of this study is 60 students in Islamic Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FTIK) at the Pontianak State Institute for Islamic Studies, divided into a control and an experimental group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test from the control and experimental groups and then analyzed using the independent samples t-test using statistical software JASP version 0.16.4. The findings revealed that there are differences between outcome learning and communication skills between the control group which only uses the small group discussion method and the experimental group which employs a combination of memorization and small group discussion methods in the course of developing Islamic Education material. The findings of this study confirm that combining the two methods, memorization, and small group discussion, is highly effective in improving learning achievement and communication skills at the student level. Further research is suggested to explore and determine other factors affecting learning outcomes and methods.
