Abstract

This research aims to assess the effectiveness of using mystery box media to improve English speaking skills among eighth-grade students at Mayjend Sutoyo Middle School in Medan. The study employs a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, encompassing three phases: Pre-cycle, Cycle 1, and Cycle 2. This methodology allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the strategy's impact on student engagement and performance. Data collection methods include observations, speaking rubric evaluations, and documentation analysis. The results indicate a marked enhancement in students' speaking abilities following the implementation of the Mystery Box strategy. These outcomes highlight the value of interactive, game-based learning techniques in fostering English speaking proficiency. Future studies might investigate the prolonged effects of this method on students' overall language development.

Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the process of increasing students' understanding of comparative degrees through the Grammar Translation Method and to find out whether the grammar-translation method can improve students' understanding of comparative degrees among Medan Pengharapan Private Middle School students. Class I and II students of Medan Pengharapan Private Middle School were the research subjects. Tests and observations are data collection tools. Students are taught using qualitative and quantitative approaches, or classroom action research. Based on this research, it can be concluded that students already understand when taking tests. This was proven when working on the first cycle: 28 students did not understand (below average) the degree of comparison, and after being given the first treatment, this increased to 12 students who understood it but did not understand comparative degrees. After being given the second treatment, only 10 students did not understand comparative degrees.

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this research is to search and analyse the difficulties faced by the students in writing narrative text which was done by the 11th grade students at SMA WR Supratman 2 in the academic year of 2023/2024. This research used descriptive qualitative method. This research involved 23 students and 2 teachers as the research samples. The data were collected from written test and interview as the instruments. Both written test and interview were analysed to gain the result. The written exam results revealed that the majority of students faced challenges in grammar, particularly with tenses. Following grammar, students struggled with sentence structure, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation. The data also showed that students were not accustomed to do writing that those habits shaped students’ opinion that writing is a difficult task. Consequently, students’ lack motivation in writing. Therefore, researcher suggest teachers to firstly ensure students mastery in the usage of language features before moving on to writing. Researcher also suggest students to practice writing short paragraphs, then gradually progress to longer texts.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out why the usage of code switching occurs in teaching-learning English. The research was conducted by using qualitative research design. The place of the research is Yayasan Pendidikan Winfield Medan. The subject of the research were 10 students and 2 teachers in Yayasan Pendidikan Winfield Medan. The instrument used in order to collect the data in this research is by in-depth interview and observation. Interview was conducted to the students and the teachers in order to find out why the usage of code switching occurs in teaching-learning English. The result of the finding is that there are 6 students that used intra-sentential code switching, 2 students that used inter-sentential code switching, 2 students that used tag switching, and both of the teachers used intra-sentential code switching. From the data, writer concluded that: (1) most of the subjects of research used intra-sentential code switching; (2) the reason of why students used code switching is that they lack in English vocabulary mastery; (3) the reason of why teachers used code switching is that they want to clarify important point, ease the tension when the class atmosphere become tense.

Abstract

This research aims to find the subtype of commissive speech acts used by presidential candidates and the most dominant subtype of commissive speech acts used by presidential candidates. The method used is the Descriptive Qualitative Method. The data of this research are utterances that contain commissive speech acts. The data source is the video of the presidential candidates' debate. The instruments of this research are observation and documentation. The researcher used the theory of Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014) to analyze the data and obtained the results that in the presidential candidate debate, commissive subtypes were found, that is 5 subtypes of the nine commissive subtypes proposed by Searle and Vanderveken (1985), the five subtypes were 31 promises, one commit, one threaten, one accept and one pledge. The most dominant subtype in the presidential candidate debate is promising, with a percentage calculation of 88.5% promise, 2.8% commit, 2.8% threaten, 2.8% accept, and 2.8% pledge.

Abstract

Reading is a crucial language skill that students must master to enhance their understanding and knowledge of various subjects. In terms of reading, various topics of text are very necessary for the language learners to make them becoming more knowledgeable. It is crucial to design reading materials which is attractive and interesting to attract students to read. This research aims to know exactly the story behind the Maimoon palace and to transcribe the story to the form of reading text. In order to conduct this research, interview method was used by the researchers to collect data. After conducting the research, there were several findings about the story of Maimoon palace from the source person in the Maimoon palace. Then, the result of interview was written in the form of story of the palace. Briefly, designing reading materials based on Maimoon palace will attract students to read the story in order to increase and enhance their reading skill and vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine how the student's skills to speak and respond to the Role Play method. There were 32 students in eighth grade at SMP Pangeran Antasari Medan who were the study’s subjects. This study employed quantitative descriptive research, gathering data through tests and questionnaires. The study collected data in two phases. The first involved a speaking test by script. The second is a questionnaire with 10 questions. The researcher calculated the test results by looking for an average value, which was then used as supporting data when analyzing questionnaire data using descriptive statistics. The study's results revealed that students' ability to speak through Role Play achieved an average score of 77, with 62% of students answering "YES" and 38% answering "NO" to the Role Play questionnaire. In addition to improving students' speaking skills, the study's implications indirectly improved students' sense of cooperation with each other as well as their confidence.

Abstract

This research investigates the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among students at SMP Pangeran Antasari Medan. The study employs a descriptive research methodology to assess students' abilities to comprehend and analyze descriptive text. Data was collected through tests and interviews, targeting a specific class of 32 students. The results indicate a varied level of proficiency among students, with a significant number demonstrating excellent comprehension in multiple-choice tests while showing weaker performance in true/false assessments. The research identifies vocabulary and prior knowledge as key factors influencing reading comprehension. Interviews with teachers support these findings, highlighting differences in students' abilities based on their background and support systems. The study emphasizes the need for enhanced vocabulary learning and more effective reading strategies to improve comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study was conducted to describe students' ability in understanding narrative text and the factors that influence it. The purpose of this study is toanalyze students' ability to understand narrative text and the factors that influence it. This research method used descriptive qualitative method. This research was conducted at SMP N 7 Medan. The subjects of this study were 30 students of class IX-6. This research used question answering test and interview test instruments. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the average comprehension ability of narrative text was 82.33 (high ability), then from the data it was also found that the factor that most influenced students' reading comprehension ability at SMP N 7 Medan was the word meaning factor with a percentage of 29.54% out of 100%, followed by vocabulary 27.27%, grammar 25% and linguistic factors 18.18%. The main cause is the limited vocabulary owned by the students.Keywords: Reading, Narrative text, influencing factors, Ability Analysis
